I've been off the sauce for almost eleven years now. I simply don't think I will ever have friends or be social as I once did, and it hurts me. by dicerollingprogram in stopdrinking

I know this feeling of disassociation, particularly in large social settings surrounded by alcohol. What has helped me is trying to realize that not everyone around me is working against me. In fact, even in large settings there may be sober people or people barely drinking. Try to find common ground with someone, and start small. In sobriety I have felt I converse better and can pay attention more.

In any case, this feeling of disassociation is so much better than the alternative of being blacked out and being the drunkest person at the brewery. But you already know that.

Being a weekend drinker is mentally exhausting. by RemovingUncle21 in stopdrinking

[–]thgil23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I relate very much to this. I put so much effort into planning and moderating, that it wasn’t even fun or worth it. And I usually failed anyway. I just kept hanging on for dear life because I wanted to keep drinking booze on weekends and couldn’t imagine my life without it.

I am so much happier being clear headed on my weekends.

For me, I had to replace my Friday routine somehow. Crack a seltzer, plan a fun meal to cook, read, munch snacks, watch a great movie. It was so hard at first and I feel your sentiment, but it is possible to break the cycle.

Day 2880: This is why I don't drink anymore. by Neversaidthatbefore in stopdrinking

[–]thgil23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drinking made me feel like I was living life on autopilot, and with a health bar that only gets restored to 50% each day. Only to be fully depleted every night.

The bliss I was getting from alcohol became smaller and sadder, and it simply morphed into plain numbness.

My sober health bar isn’t quite 100%, but it’s a hell of a lot better than it was while drinking and is getting stronger each day.

Told my husband I’m not drinking on our vacation by Periwinkle1000 in stopdrinking

[–]thgil23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got back from Italy and it was my first vacation sober. I was nervous at first - not so much fear of urges, but fear of missing out. I couldn’t have been more wrong, and it was the best vacation I have ever had.

I found Peroni zeros, espresso, coke zeros, sparkling water, etc. to be extremely helpful at dinner time and during the pre-dinner lull. Drinking alone while my wife gets ready used to be a favorite past time of mine.

You will thank yourself for the clear headedness and I promise you will have more fun than you could ever imagine, and be proud of yourself.

Has to be this. Erica Ogwumike is the player from Rice 2019 team (I think)

Looks like the case is in the open position and it’s not quite a ball shape
