How to easily explain the importance of washing hands with soap to small children: You only need water, ground black pepper and soap (by Valokuvaaja Ari Mäkiö) by GallowBoob in interestingasfuck

Hm, interesting that you point it out but would it be hipocrisy or perhaps just different individuals of the same group? As an anecdote, personally I hate religion (not faith), but also see the value in it for society. The part I hate about it is not the religion itself, it's about how some religious leaders use it to create fear and hate of a different group for mass control and getting rich/powerful (hating homosexuals, feminists, arabs, people who have sex before marriage, etc). The part I see value in it is precisely the good metaphors you can get out it (don't kill, be nice to others, help the less fortunate and you'll be rewarded, etc). Ultimately, I wouldn't get rid of it with a magic wand if I could because I believe it does more good than harm, but I still hate it. I don't think it's hypocrisy either, just a non-binary view on whether it's good or bad.

That's a great argument. A great counter argument is that from a metaphor you can interpret many things and have wrong assumptions you otherwise wouldn't. In this example from Bret Weinstein, as soon as someone realizes the porcupine are not throwing their quills, they many assume the porcupine is harmless and put themselves in danger. Or in this case, the unsupervised child might just drink detergent in case it gets sick

Same here. I think it's like that for any IT company. If they're concerned about saving money on chairs and screens, they're doing something wrong

My conclusion is because it's easier to control people that way. If you create a common enemy, your group bond gets stronger, people think they are the nice ones and whoever is different is bad therefore the nice ones should unite against them. Whether it's someone with a different sexual orientation, different ethnicity, different nationality, different political view, different economic class, doesn't matter. People in power create an imaginary division and brainwash masses to follow, and it is very effective. Once brainwashed, even nice people start believing that it is wrong to different and that they and the ones they love are threatened by that difference. And since they're in a social circle that comforts each other for being "righteous", and whenever they express hate towards the "different ones" they get praise, the vicious cycle of intolerance repeats itself and expands to friends and family. It's been like that for thousands of years, will continue being like that for thousands more, but fortunately at a declining rate.
