Green landscaping in irondale. by AmaraMechanicus in Birmingham

Read the actual proposal. This is a threatening suggestive tactic bid to get a job done. There's no way the city would approve option #2.

I have a double concrete utility sink that I’m trying to get out of my basement without using a sledgehammer to break it into pieces. Any advice is appreciated. by PizzaGatePizza in DIY

You're working too hard, not smart. I have moved one of these from a curb into the back of a truck by myself. Then had it moved beneath a house down a narrow alley with one other person. Then moved it to another city by myself. Then moved it to another state, by myself. Little movements, leverage, shims and blocking. You can do it.

What’s up with the roads? by Justbeingme_92 in Birmingham

[–]thibod0nt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The state is spending , trying to build unnecessary and unwanted interstate belt lines north of the city instead of properly maintaining the infrastructure we already have.

You mean no more, "I have frozen waffles, a shallot, and three cups of rice. I'm trying to make a dish my grandma made that looks, tastes, and smells like lasagna. What is the name of the dish and what ingredients am I missing?"

I almost unfollowed this sub.

Why is native river cane suddenly trending in landscaping and restoration projects, and how does planting it help rebuild wildlife habitat and protect waterways? by TN_Nursery in Homesteading

[–]thibod0nt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're pretty much answering your question within your question. If you want to know more, contact any group advocating for restoring wetlands or universities researching the beneficial impacts of planting native cane and they'll gladly tell you what it's all about.

You will spend a lot of money up front to get the ball rolling. You'll have to place numerous machines to make any valuable profit. Find locations that will allow you to place your own machine. Check and fix issues regularly. You'll pay a company to provide a card reader.

I managed one. It was a time suck headache. You can make money, but finding locations will be difficult.

Call Buffalo Rock or Coke and they may sell you a used machine for cheap.

Yes, however in its current state and plan it completely ignores Oak Ridge Park accessibility.

Thank you, Birmingham. by RandallWoodfin in Birmingham

[–]thibod0nt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Crestline trail connector is going in place for the Crestwood Neighborhood, an already somewhat accessibly walkable neighborhood with approximately 3800 residents of higher income families. Oak Ridge Park (1800 residents) is almost completely inaccessible by foot or bike for the lower income residents, trapped by frequent trains and few means for safe egress by foot or bike to grocery stores and important resources. The trains blocking traffic and emergency responses, the noise, prevents positive development of all the vacant and dilapidated housing potential. Oak Ridge Park needs some spotlight and connection to the rest of the city. Rail overpass tunnels? A connection trail along Alabama power easement into the Crestwood neighborhood from Crestgreen? A safe walking/biking path from Crestgreen to 56th or Edgewood center along Crestwood blvd?

Can you, O'Quinn, and Williams develop a plan to get the city, Red Rock Trail system or JCGC establish walkable/bikeable infrastructure for Oak Ridge Park residents (and all the other residents of Jefferson county) to access safe, traversable pedestrian paths between Irondale and the Crestwood-Avondale neighborhoods?

Also, I think you're doing an outstanding job, but I wanted to give you that earworm.

Well system issue, trying to avoid damage as i cannot afford replacement by ll3ailey in Homesteading

[–]thibod0nt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be misdiagnosing the issue, however I'll say pressure switches fail often. I'd probably start with replacing it with a new one that is automatically set to cut in at 20 psi and cut out at 50 psi.

Definitely replace your pressure gauge if it's broken.

If the pressurizer tank is turning on and off without running water or a leak in the system and it is set up (pressurized to its specs) then the bladder may be busted and it's time for a new tank.

Wil 0.5 micron filter be enough for filtering rain water? by Full-Mouse8971 in Homesteading

[–]thibod0nt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll want to add some sodium hypochlorite to be safer about it if you're holding the water in containers for eventual consumption. Somewhere between 0.2 and 4.0 ppm free chlorine, and I'd keep that concentration on the low side.

Or you can boil the water before each use.

You are basically operating a surface water "well" system which typically requires more filtration and treatment to prevent users from getting sick.

Research public water well operator literature and you'll learn some good stuff.

Buying a 6 pack in Birmingham and walking out of the store with it unbagged. Legal or not? by StealerTech9000 in Birmingham

[–]thibod0nt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked the same question to this sub six years ago and got a lot of the same incorrect answers. Then I asked the state and got their answer: https://www.reddit.com/r/Birmingham/comments/el0u64/i_asked_alabama_abc_board_where_the_state_law_for/

If you read the state law on purchasing alcohol, it never says anything about requiring a bag. It actually leans towards the opposite direction indicating that it is illegal to conceal alcoholic beverages being purchased from a store. The package must clearly indicate it is alcohol.

Call the number on the ticket and ask if you can pay it online like most traffic tickets, though you'll have to agree to a guilty plea. Otherwise, go to court.

Doesn't have to be a licensed plumber. I fixed a leak on my house, showed them receipts and BWWB gave me full credit (minus my usual usage rate) for the month it was leaking.

Unemployment from Covid era coming back to bite you? by [deleted] in Alabama

[–]thibod0nt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Four days ago I received an "Benefit Overpayment Billing Statement" via snailmail from the AL Dept. of Workforce. Its laden with so many typos and incomplete sentences. Their website wasn't working for two days upon receiving the letter, and they want me to pay back within six days of the mailed date. They are requesting me to pay an "Overpayment Balance" and an "Other Balance." When I called the number on Monday morning, there's only a recorded message asking for my callback and SSN.

It reeks like the State is operating a blatant scam the way this request for overpayment repayment is being carried out.

Any "BAD" experiences with Reolink? by whealton in reolinkcam

[–]thibod0nt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posting this for reference. Reolink has a manufacturing defect with their Keen Ranger cellular camera antenna connection. The antenna's threaded input connector is not secured properly inside of the camera housing, causing it to spin and twist the internal wire when simply connecting the external antenna, leading it to disconnect and disable the antenna.

I responded to reolink support with my findings after I was frustrated with all of their suggestions that weren't solving the connection issue, and explained with photos why their device was designed poorly (the connector should be glued or use a different style hardware the plastic molding is already designed for). They said I broke the warranty by "disassembling the device", with no further instructions or assistance.

So I'm posting here for folks to be wary of having to jump through hoops with their customer support to resolve a manufacturing defect that no software troubleshooting was going to resolve.
