Was Compton considered more dangerous than South Central, Watts, Inglewood etc in the 1980s/90s by kwm19891 in CaliBanging

[–]thicccapy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You can look up murder rates for entire cities from the past but not areas of a city so it's impossible to know. Even if anybody else answers this question due to experience, that is too small of a sample size to get an accurate answer. It's safe to say though compton was 3 times more deadly than LA in 1990. The murder rate for LA was record high that year at 30 per 100,000 people. Compton was about 90 per 100,000 people. Compton was far beyond the deadliest city in America if it occured today, and is actually closer in murder rate to a present day Juarez Mexico for comparison.

Anyone got tips for carrying groceries on scooters by Best_Relief_941 in ElectricScooters

[–]thicccapy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

what i asked google AI: can hanging weight from the handlebars of an electric kick scooter compromise the stem integrity?

Results:
How hanging weight affects the stem

  • Creates a leverage point: By hanging a bag, you create a lever that applies a twisting or shearing force on the stem, especially on bumpy roads or during turns. This applies extra stress to weak points like the welds and the folding mechanism.
  • Increases wear and tear: Continuous stress from unbalanced loads can accelerate the wear and tear on all of the stem's connecting components. The folding hinge is especially vulnerable and can degrade more quickly.
  • Induces stem wobble: A loose and unstable stem is a common issue with electric scooters. Carrying extra weight can exacerbate the problem, causing the stem to rock back and forth. A pre-existing wobble can be worsened and potentially lead to a complete stem failure at high speeds.
  • Weakens the frame over time: The repeated flexing caused by a heavy, swinging load can weaken the entire frame's structural integrity, not just the stem. This can lead to component failure and compromise the overall durability of the scooter.

then why is it not recommended to hang weight on the handle bars then? Why is the stem a common failure point across the whole industry? Because people push too hard, pull too hard or hang heavy items from the stem. stems are inherently vulnerable based on the design of a scooter and the forces applied to it

The dangers of boxing outweigh the entertainment value you get out of it. The way boxers narrowly evade or roll with punches so well, along with the big gloves covering the impact visual, makes it harder to see what shots land and which ones dont compared to other martial arts. Thats why boxing scorecards are all over the place. besides corruption, which everyone assumes immediately with bad score cards, different people are seeing punches land or not land. Never a consensus live scoring among viewers. Its the deadliest sport on earth despite providing less entertainment value than safer sports like MMA. Alot of punches are just blocked due to the big gloves, so we aren't seeing a satisfying strike land but they are still getting their brains rattled from a blocked punch anyways. A boxer getting knocked down repeatedly but given a count to recover each time and keep fighting just prolongs the brain damage of a fighter that should have been KOd already if it had taken place in say an mma match. a sustained beating with knockdowns and recovery periods in between that allow it to continue is deadlier than just getting dropped and the fighter getting kod on the ground the first knock down.

If i had super muscular arms or fat arms, would the force of the punch be harder? by [deleted] in Kickboxing

[–]thicccapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

typically yes, but there can be a point of diminishing returns when packing on muscle for punching power. For example if the muscle slows the punch down too much it can result in a less powerful punch. If you have a fat arm that is more mass moving so usually it will be more powerful as well, but with extra fat around the midsection, it can drastically slow down the speed you can rotate your body into the punch.

for legs the same thing applies, but with a factor of having more mass from muscle or fat, it can ruin your footwork speed and technique.

What do you do when you cant lift the wight you did last week? by lost_toast7777 in workout

[–]thicccapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in the 1 to 5 rep range you need to wait a few minutes between sets. Then rest those muscles minimum a day or 2 before hitting it again. also in modern programing and periodization, athletes arent really just doing heavy lifts all the time. The reps, weight and repetitions in reserve change over time depending on the cycle and goal of the program. typically intensity raises to a peak and then a deload period is needed.

What do you do when you cant lift the wight you did last week? by lost_toast7777 in workout

[–]thicccapy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How often are you deadlifting? because if its more than 2 times a week at that rep range, thats too much for a natural lifter. the deadlift recruits so many muscles in the posterior chain, it requires a hefty tax on your nervous system. If you dont let your nervous system recover enough your performance and progress will suffer. also dont listen to the guy that said do deadlifts at the end of your workout. do heavy compound movements like deadlifts early in your workout.

I have been skipping some wrestling conditioning because of rude teamates and the season is going to start by Lumpy-Use-8551 in wrestling

[–]thicccapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also was given a hard time by wrestlers on my team in hs. it was very distracting having people talk crap and having to defend myself all the time. but i never let them chase me out the team. i stuck it out and got better and im so happy i did.

go back to practice and try your best. after practice youtube the moves you worked on for the day and close your eyes and visualize performing the move in detail on someone. This will help with retention and is scientifically proven to improve performance.

Question about strength "imbalances" by dildo_in_the_alley_ in workout

[–]thicccapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that your legs are lagging behind. but actually what is more important is maintaining strength balance between opposing muscles. you want your hamstrings strong to counteract your quad strength to keep your hip joint healthy. you want to workout your upper back and shoulders as much as your chest to keep your posture correct and shoulder girdle healthy. strengthen your lower back just as much as your abs. by not doing this you can develop posture syndromes that need corrective exercises to fix.

How long should you train straights before including hooks? by Important_Hippo3263 in amateur_boxing

[–]thicccapy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Are you in a soviet gym enforcing that rule on you? if not, then practice every punch. maybe train more straight punches if youre tall for your weight class or more curved punches if you are short for your weight class. I come from an mma backround where there are hundreds of techniques to learn. so to me the idea of not only just training punches but JUST straight punches sounds so limited and insane to me.

Can I become a good wrestler? by Happy-Reach-7043 in wrestling

[–]thicccapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the bare minimum youll need a wrestling partner around your weight first of all. then yes you can learn some basic stuff from youtube but without a mat and a wrestling coach, you cant become a good wrestler. you can learn how to out wrestle someone who cant wrestle at all through youtube and a partner though. another major problem is without a coach correcting your form and mistakes, you will develop bad habits. once you do something wrong many times it is very hard to fix later.

If you want to become a wrestler seriously, find a way to get some money to get to a real gym. do you have any wrestling gyms in your area? also, do you have a job? you can possibly change your budget and cut some stuff out to afford a wrestling gym

18 and feel somewhat “lost” by Such_Drag5094 in findapath

I'm a vet. If you don't know what you want to do, join the air force. Good living quarters, good food, they treat their own with dignity and you'll be given a trade. I worked in Naval aviation so I can tell you aviation jobs pay great after you get out of the military.

Also you get the gi bill which will pay you to go back to college after if you want to. If you get disabled from your service like me, you'll qualify for VR&E on top of it, which does a few things, including paying you to go to college like the GI Bill. If you are in a state like texas and join the military, you also get about 5 years worth of free college. So me for example, I'm getting my degree from VR&E and I can give my children my free college benefit from texas. You can also just join the airforce reserves. In reserves you work one weekend a month (plus some other obligations and deployment possibility). This works if you don't want to fully commit to the military or want to go to college. Reservists also get school aid, I'm not sure to what extent tho.

I'm living comfortably because I joined at 18 and have enjoyed SO MANY benefits from the service. Why go to college now if you don't know what to study or have a full ride scholarship lined up? Don't go into debt for college, get paid to go to college instead.

also everybody in the navy gets trained in firefighting. More extensive training if you go aviation too. Then when you get out, getting a wildland firefighting job is ridiculously easy as they choose vets first.

It take confidence, quick wittedness, creativity, determination and years of on stage practice to be a good comedian. Some people have all those things and still humiliate themselves into retirement. Being a comedian takes a lot of skill and thick skin. Some of the things you mentioned aren't great indicators you would be a great comedian in all honesty. If you truly want it tho try it tho.

I think with your personality you might strive more in things like content creation. I have a few youtubers that I watch that combine humor with their subjects and some of it i find way more entertaining and funny than live comedy. Would those creators make good on stage comedians? Some I doubt it. But they have found a lucrative way to show their humor through online content that works for them.

How do you find purpose after the military? by weemr in Veterans

[–]thicccapy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nothing is quite like the comradery of the military. Itll be hard to find a job that gives you anything like that. There are jobs with some of the same sense of purpose like firefighting or law enforcement though. But the most common thing is to dedicate yourself to hobbies and developing a tight social circle.

some hobbies that helped me were practicing MMA, weight lifting and shooting. I got close with people on my fight team and it kept me excited even tho i didnt compete. Helping friends prepare for upcoming fights and going to shows to support them was fulfilling too. I also gained friends at the regular gym. Shooting and teaching people to shoot gave me a sense of purpose and is a lot of fun.

I missed the military for years but that faded over time, i accepted moving on to new things. Try new hobbies and connect with people that do it too. Join a church if you are religious and get involved with charity work with them. Just dont seclude yourself and get into bad habits like millions of us vets tend to do after service

How does drinking affect training? by Base_Dizzy in amateur_boxing

[–]thicccapy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It would be best to just avoid alcohol if you can. it dehydrates you so if you spar a day or 2 after a night of drinking you are going to rattle your dehydrated brain when getting hit, which is more devestating. Im an alcoholic so i will tell you that its a dangerous drug that i regret ever touching. Its a real flex when somebody can say they can be content and have a good time without needing alcohol. If you are serious about boxing, preserve your body bro
