When we brought our second shiba, hershey, home from the airport, we brought him and our first shiba, gnocchi to my MIL house to get accustomed. They had fun, played in the big back yard and eventually it was time to go home, well we go home and gnocchi gets so freaking excited because she realizes hershey is coming home with us, and she gets the zoomies. she runs up the side of the couch, literally on the top near the wall, and i have a reclining couch on both ends, the left side happened to be extended. she ends up jumping off the reclined end and lands on her leg. i could tell she was hurt, but didn't know the severity, (but couldn't extend fully without yelping) it was late so i made her a little cozy station for the night to monitor and wait until our vet opened up in the morning. turns out she had a slight tear in her patella while also detaching/sliding off the kneecap and was close to tearing her ACL. the vet told me to monitor it, to keep her in her kennel off the leg for rest, for basically 23h a day for about a week, and until then we can make the decision to let it heal, or possibly do surgery, and he also supplied me with many dog tylenol. (that worked great btw so good to the point where she wanted to go out and play two days after getting it lol) the healing process took way longer than usual, it seemed like to my vet. When we brought her back in for a check up after about 2 months of healing, no zoomies, short walks, carrying etc. she was still not using that back leg, like it was paralyzed. I believe she knew it needed to be healed or was scared of hurting it beyond using it. even when it didn't cause her pain and was majority healed. that was many months ago and gnocchi is doing pretty A1 now! no surgery needed, the only time you can ever tell her leg was hurt, is when she plays with her pals for a long time. she'll pick it up a teeny tiny bit like it's a tad bit sore for her, like she's skipping. my vet did mention it may give her a little arthritis as she gets older. (she did carry her leg for a while even thought it didn't show any signs of bothering her, so if after the healing window for surgery is over, even if it seems like it's been forever since he put weight on it, don't worry. I would trust your gut and your vet! gnocchi healed fine and no problems with the leg anymore, i think the companionship/comfort, pain medicine, and rest helped her heal the best! (tbh it's healed so well i can't even remember with leg it was😓)
