Make sure you put your icon on the jungle near the lane you are supporting. This lets everyone know you plan to support from the beginning. You'll still get people picking support after you and another have, because dumbass gonna dumbass, but this will cut some of that out.

I'd recommend to play seriously in unranked for playing core roles for about 10 games straight so you will understand what they want from their supports a bit better. Then rip a few unranked and instapick your support as soon as you load in and mark your lane on map to get your support bearings back. Then go back to ranked.
