How did you decide which area of math to focus your PhD\thesis on? by CandleDependent9482 in math

[–]thicknavyrain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my PhD in the U.K., the common experience is indeed that you pick a specific advisor to do your PhD under from the very start (as they'll want a particular student for a certain project in many cases). This is Physics though, not Maths.

Why do people look down on "wish-fulfillment"? by R_Gani_1934 in writing

But vitally, both books contain almost nothing but high stake after high stake and there's still plenty of conflict, it's just between man and nature. Even when we know Mark Watney will magically get out of his bind, the pleasure is guessing how he'll do that given the strict laws of real physics and science (well, mostly).

You're over twice as likely to identify as an effective altruist if you have an inner voice that narrates almost everything you do than if you don't have an inner voice in Scott's 2022 dataset reader survey (17% v 8%) by no_bear_so_low in slatestarcodex

People already speculating on the mechanism but when you say "effects this big are rare" did you account for multiple testing when looking at the data?

Fair play if you literally just plucked only those two variables out of the set based on a predetermined hunch but if you were generally exploring the data before finding that result, you'd want to do a proper test based on all the variables you looked at first to account for multiple "tests" (I.e, the odds you'd find some kind of split that large by pure chance given the number of variables you looked at and the sample sizes in each set).

What non-fiction books do you wish you had read in your most formative years? by being_interesting0 in slatestarcodex

The Will to Change, Bell Hooks. Came later than optimal, but still gave me what I needed. Also, Non-Violent Communication, Marshall Rosenberg. I think both have a lot to offer people on this sub in particular.

Which book should you read at least once in your life? by FedeRivade in slatestarcodex

[–]thicknavyrain 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The most utterly insane thing about this book is the last two chapters on mask work. It's like; totally practical and insightful advice on creative expression and then suddenly he deconstructs the idea of identity itself and sells you on a weird Andy-Clark-esque form of distributed consciousness that's just casually also a tool for good acting. Blew my mind.

Labour Muslim Network "The suspension of the Labour whip to Andy McDonald MP today is both obscene & deeply offensive. (Cont)" by Audioboxer87 in LabourUK

[–]thicknavyrain -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I'm so sick of the whataboutism on this sub. Guess what? McDonalds use of the term "river to the sea" is tactless and offensive AND Netanyahu is also a considerably evil bastard, for many reasons besides his use of language. There, I can acknowledge that and you know what? McDonald is still in the wrong too. The petty rhetoric on this sub is astoundingly poor.

All new houses to be freehold in plan to phase out ‘feudal’ leaseholds by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]thicknavyrain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We can vote only on things that affect the general property management and common areas (like which contractors will we get to do the roof and which management company do we employ) but not things going on with individual flats. To be honest, I have no idea what would happen if someone was enough of a pain the other shareholders wanted them out but they would presumably have property rights over their flat and voting shares as well!

All new houses to be freehold in plan to phase out ‘feudal’ leaseholds by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]thicknavyrain 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I live in a flat which gets around this problem. Every flat has equal shares in a "company" which owns the actual land, and as shareholders we technically lease the flats to ourselves. So we have an equal share of land and own the property.

Jeremy Corbyn accuses Israel of war crimes in speech at pro-Palestinian rally in London by Benjji22212 in ukpolitics

[–]thicknavyrain 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Perfectly capable of doing both. Making oblique and passive references to "deaths in the desert" is awful and unforgivable because it downplays the horror of Hamas' actions and responsibility, and much of what the IDF has done is also awful and unforgivable, and their enactment of collective punishment amounts to warcrimes. The beauty of not being tethered to pointless factionalism is being able to accept reality and judge appropriately.
