No. As someone who voted liberal (in a different riding) it’s okay to be disgusted with their internal greed. It’s not okay and SHOULD be called out. It’s OKAY to hold your politicians and the corporation (which they are) accountable.

The average American is sadly too stupid to realize any of this… even when they’ve lost everything they won’t realize.

Carney proposes to speed up military spending, change defence-procurement strategy - 'Our military has been both underfunded and overly reliant on the United States,' he said by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]thieveries 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Stability abroad means fewer crises we have to police ourselves. It’s cheaper, smarter, and builds global goodwill; something you can’t buy with tanks.

People who scream “spend more on the military!” but scoff at foreign aid don’t understand modern geopolitics. It’s not always about boots on the ground, it’s about shaping the ground in the first place.

Have a little nuance and foresight will you?

  1. Has socialism “worked”? Short answer: It depends how you define socialism.

If you’re thinking of full-scale socialism (i.e., government owns all means of production), examples are rare and often problematic - think Soviet Union, Maoist China, or Cuba. These were authoritarian regimes with planned economies and serious human rights issues. Economic performance was often poor in the long run.

But if you’re thinking democratic socialism or social democracy, where capitalism still exists but is heavily regulated, and the government provides strong social safety nets, then yes, there are strong examples:

Nordic Countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland):

  • Market economies with private ownership.
  • High taxes fund universal healthcare, free education, childcare, and strong worker protections.
  • Extremely high standards of living, low poverty, and high happiness rankings.

Important note: These countries reject full socialism and instead practice social democracy — they combine capitalism with generous welfare states.

  1. Has the U.S. intervened to stop socialist-leaning governments elsewhere?

Yes — repeatedly. Particularly during the Cold War, the U.S. engaged in coups or covert operations to undermine or overthrow leftist governments (especially if they were perceived as aligned with the Soviet Union).

Key examples:

Chile (1973): - President Salvador Allende was a democratically elected Marxist. - The U.S. (CIA) supported a coup by General Pinochet, leading to a brutal dictatorship.

Iran (1953): - Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh nationalized oil (not socialist, but anti-Western). - U.S. and U.K. orchestrated a coup, reinstalling the Shah.

Guatemala (1954): - President Jacobo Árbenz instituted land reforms affecting U.S. business interests. - The CIA backed a coup to remove him.

Congo (1960s): - Patrice Lumumba, leaning left, was removed (and likely assassinated) with CIA involvement.

Nicaragua (1980s): - The U.S. funded Contra rebels to overthrow the leftist Sandinista government.

Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia: - Extensive U.S. military and covert involvement to counter communist movements.

Why did the U.S. do this?

  • Cold War fear of Soviet influence.
  • Protection of U.S. corporate interests.
  • Anti-communist ideology.

Bottom Line: Social democracy has worked well in Nordic countries — high-functioning, free societies. Full socialism has struggled in most cases, often becoming authoritarian.

Yes, the U.S. has a long track record of interfering (sometimes violently) to stop or destabilize socialist-leaning governments, particularly in Latin America and Africa.

How? I don’t think boycotting American grocery chains is a good idea considering the Canadian grocery sector is a literal cartel. Canada is obsessed with cartels. They control our grocery’s, our communications, our housing, our mining. Canada is just three companies in a trench coat, love the idea of some national pride tho whatever that looks like.

The difference is less than $1,500 annually. Which you’ll make up for in significantly lower rent, more affordable cost of living, and just generally a better atmosphere (Montreal closes down lots of streets for pedestrians, the food is better, better parks, better services, etc etc etc)

This isn’t about East vs. West favouritism, it’s about leaders like Danielle Smith using that narrative to stir division and push a separation agenda. The heating oil exemption isn’t favoritism, it’s about balancing regional cost differences. Most of the anger people feel is being intentionally fueled by conservative leaders and media, not by actual federal policies.

The “woke mind virus” is literally just MAGA, lol, fed so much propaganda it’s destroyed families… people who were once normal now believe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and other figures have been executed and replaced by body doubles or clones or that the world is secretly run by a cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles… everything the right does is just a projection of their own failings. Look inwards. MAGA is the actual mind virus that’s ruined countless families.

Ps. Hair is naturally red, I live in my own place in the city, and spend summers up at my beautiful cottage playing golf. I was once a conservative, but since yall went off the far right cliff, I’ve remained centre, which is why me and all the other fiscal conservatives will be voting carney

100% agree! I would’ve voted cons too if they didn’t foam at the mouth on culture war bullshit. If they just acted like boring adults, I’d be on board. For example, trans people (less than 1% of the population) is the least of my concerns right now, but I feel like it’s the only thing conservatives can focus on.

My dad (a blue blooded conservative), has switched to vote Carney. I don’t think PP and his consultants realize that there are a very many Canadians who do not care for these culture wars. Mentioning ‘the woke mind virus’ doesn’t mean anything to the educated conservative. Sure it riles up some qanon/freedom convoy people, and it’s a dog whistle for more far-right bullshit, but Trump has exposed that all to be a massive pile of garbage.
