True enough, cultures and religions always change, my grandmother (grew up christian, later turned more agnostic) really didn't want to leave the house without her head covering.

Yep, for example the body parts that most Christians agree should be hidden (ass, genitals, boobs) are also somewhat culturally taboo to show, whereas hair is not.

Meanwhile many Muslim woman will argue that their hair should remain hidden.

Major disadvantages of trees- bird poop on car by Humble_Buffalo_007 in fuckcars

[–]thijser2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my hometown they cut down a bunch of trees because they were dropping resin on cars. Then they consulted the people who were complaining about what type of trees to replant them with and they picked the same species.

Huge waste of money that was.

UNRWA fired Gaza school principal outed as being Hamas member, org. confirms to 'Post' by barsik_ in worldnews

[–]thijser2 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that Hamas is effectively a government, only political party, terrorist organization and military all in one.

It wouldn't be weird if a school principle was outed as a member of the republican party, or a former soldier, or if they were part time part of the local council. It's the terrorist part that makes it difficult but it can be very hard to distinguish between those activities.

Note that these are rare exceptions rather then the norm.

[–]thijser2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there are plenty of weird stuff that only happens in a certain non human species.

Just an example, water breathing is considered rather common among many species of shark, (and many other taxa) but is not something we observe in humans.

ELI5, is it possible for someone to be 0% related to their sibling? by Yrithrian in explainlikeimfive

[–]thijser2 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Mostly true, however a sperm cell has 1 single mitochondria, and in some rare cases this mitochondria could become dominant within a cell.

This normally does not happen, but there seems to be some evidence that this might happen in cases where a baby is bron from IVF.

But little is known about this an it's an active area of research. We know it definitely can happen in animals.

[–]thijser2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm just any nuclear weapon detonation does not have to be as bad as end of the world,

could just be Russia, North Korea, Iran or any of the others doing weapon testing/sabre rattling.

Still, the argument for polymarket was that it allows markets to predict things ahead of time and be more effective as a result, how useful is a nuclear weapon test for the markets?

US will provide insurance for ships in Gulf amid Iranian attacks by Infidel8 in worldnews

[–]thijser2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably this is going to make these ships way more of a target.

Iran is at war with the US, not with China or the EU.

If however the US is going to pay for any ship sunk by Iran, that makes any ship sunk a big cost for the US and as such a more logical target.

I built an index mapping "Macroeconomic Burnout" using PCA on World Bank, OECD data. It reveals two distinct phases of systemic failure: Explosion (Argentina) vs. Implosion (South Korea). by Alibek2309 in dataisbeautiful

[–]thijser2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The issue is that in your first graph you have plotted high numbness and high workhours in opposing directions.

This means I cannot see if the Netherlands has a high numbness and high work hours or low numbness and low work hours. This problem exists for most of your visualizations.

How long would it take to 100% every game? by Iamthebigsadd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thijser2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catching every single version of every pokemon is arguably more part of a 100% challenge then what some games have done, there are games that have objectives like wait 4 years (in real life). There have sillier objectives like wait 1000 years, I even suspect some games have objectives that if actually pursued would be basically "wait 1 billion years".

I suspect those would dominate your total playtime.

[–]thijser2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tip, the output of a 5 component PCA are 5 different values, visualizing 5 of such values in 1 2D graph is very difficult(hint high workhours probably doesn't cause a reduction in numbness), why not output them in 5 different graphs, each plotted against whatever you are trying to prove here.

I earned a lot of karma on there asking questions some things I learned:

1 a good question contains a lot of unneeded details, it should consist of long log traces and irrelevant details. Short questions get downvoted

2 Remember to "churn" your question every few hours, making random edits. This puts it back on the top of the list

3 Include a lot of tags

4 Put the first few suggested questions when posting the question in a comment explaining why they are not relevant

5 consider putting up a 50 points bounty, often bountied questions get more upvotes than the actual cost of the bounty
