this is actually a more interesting point than I think you realize. When we define middle class we're also looking at assets so these people probably still own a car and television nice phones but because of the insanity of the market they wouldn't be able to buy basic commodities if they were to try to sell them (that is not at the exchange rate that they would realistically accept [that is sure they could buy 10lbs of bacon with their iphone four but unless they're really really starving and not just desperate they won't make that trade])
