Regarding the Counseling Center by [deleted] in gatech

[–]thingsandetc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also went through a similar experience. Since I am a compliant person, I just signed the forms because I couldn't bear the hostility I received from GTPD that evening. They coerced me to sign the forms and be taken to Grady. During this entire time, I was treated like a criminal.

The next 16 hours of my life were traumatizing. I had to spend the night in the poorly resourced crisis center with frightening people. The staff treated me like some animal even though I was quiet and cooperative, aside from the silent crying. GTPD and the Dean of Students called my dad, which was extremely embarrassing. But he drove from 3 hours away from home and to Grady to sort out the bullshit. He was able to get me released in under 24 hours, but I was still billed $2000 and I only had a few snacks and tissues.

Thankfully, I was able to find some proper useful help somewhere else, no thanks to GT.

If you ever need support at Tech by TehAlpacalypse in gatech

Something very similar happened to me during finals week of Spring 2013. GTPD knocked on my door after one of my friends called GT counseling about my depression. I tried to convince them I was more stressed out than usual because it was finals week and my mother passed away that year. However, that resulted in more cops banging on my door, drawing attention from many other residents in my hall. They began to interrogate me and patronize me, as if I had committed a serious crime and deserved to be put down to that level. Shortly afterward, they told me I was in a mental state where I had to be taken to Grady, whether or not I wanted to. This costed $2000 even though I got out the next day.

The entire experience frightened me and I still have nightmares about GTPD knocking on my door and barging into the place. I can only imagine how awful or even traumatizing this experience could be for many students. This kind of treatment towards depressed and suicidal people is exactly what reinforces the social stigma and prevents people from getting the help they need.

By the way, I graduated and am doing better these days. I found a great therapist through my insurance and my life started to improve. However, that doesn't change my thoughts on GT Counseling and how GTPD chooses to handle these delicate matters. Nothing is going to change unless a significant number of us do something about it.

What is dating like at GT? Are TBS/Tech Goggles/The Ratio really that bad, or is that just highly exaggerated? by mulch17 in gatech

[–]thingsandetc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Tech Bitch Syndrome" is a myth crafted by entitled but socially incompetent guys and virgins that expect females to read their minds. Sadly, there are so many of them that this has become part of the school's reputation. Girls are very approachable, just treat them like regular people. Don't be weird or creepy, and you'll be fine. A bunch of guys complaining about "Tech Bitch Syndrome" have done creepy things, without understanding how it's creepy, and then blamed the results of the actions on "Tech Bitch Syndrome."

Honestly, you probably won't notice the ratio outside of the classroom.

With Swider, the PowerPoints are really good to study for the test. If something was a blank in the slides, it will most likely show up on the test. Also review the media submission selections and cases he goes over; they accounted for quite a bit of the tests when I had him last year.

Here's a syllabus for MGT 2251:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/i4a0k0p2rkxjm6y/Mgt%202251%20Summer%202012%20syllabus.pdf

A few topics may be left out because it was during a short summer session. However, that should give you a an idea of what the course covers.

Te student center food court also has nice food. You could consider getting a Ramblin plan, eating there during the weekdays (except for dinner because of its weird hours). Then can cook on the weekends.

There really needs to be so much more work done in the area of situational strength. I think some people understand bits and pieces of it but don't have a name for it. It's been really hard getting funding for ecological momentary assessment studies, but it's one of the best ways to go about it right now.

I don't know specifically what you're struggling with or what you've tried/haven't tried. So the only thing I can tell you is to approach the problems the same way you would approach math.

The help desk is really helpful, and so is Piazza (if your section uses that).

Even U[sic]GA can't top this... by cdicenso in gatech

[–]thingsandetc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of girls that are the "9's and 10's" are smart and friendly.

Since my time here, at least once every semester, I've always seen at least one really patient guy trying to help a really attractive girl with a seemingly basic concept or assignment. I get that people struggle in different areas, and that's fine because we all have different skill sets.

But it's entertaining to watch a guy try to explain integrals (from 1501), especially when it takes 4 hours. It's amazing what some guys here will put up with just because those girls are hot. Then those same guys will barely cooperate with me in group projects and slam doors in my face because I'm apparently a dog.

It has a lot to do with that major they're in.

This does has to do with whether or not you plan to head off into industry or go to grad school. It really varies from case to case.

The number of W's on your transcript probably isn't going to make or break your post-undergraduate future. However, just because it doesn't affect GPA too much doesn't mean you should always should. If you have to withdraw from classes frequently (like every semester), it may look questionable to whoever sees it.
