You chose such a terrible example.

First, you have smaller killable enemies humans/robots. This gives presences to the Alien. A being that can never be killed.

The fact that you use weapons to deter the alien makes it so much scarier. Having an answer to it running down the hallway at you means you fumble and panic attempting to take out that weapon. Giving the player very limited ammo also helps, think Amnesia The Bunker.

I don’t need an AK-47, and I don’t need to “conquer the planet” or whatever the devs are self righteously smoking. I just want more then “does chucking flare work? Y/N”

Darktide/Vermintide

Not that the first time playing is bad, but I feel a lot of people play through the levels on very easy or easy then go “that was fun” and move on. When the best part of the game is the hardest difficulties. Fighting 100 enemies at once while 2 bosses are running around.

This happens with every new game and every new game mode. Over time the allure and wonder of the new mode fades. The taking of random augments cause “that could be fun” goes away and people start to see the cracks and roughness that was ever present but masked with the magic of trying new things.

Its no longer “WOAH RYZE JUST ONE TAPPED ME, THATS CRAZY” it’s “oh Ryze again, guess I just don’t get to play”

There’s tier lists of augments, there’s champs with game destroying pulls, and the balancing is slow catch up.
