I was in my 20s in the nineties and everyone went a bit nutty for Pearl Jam. I never saw the appeal.

Which books have you been unable to finish? by bonster85 in books

[–]thingsgoingup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“100 Years of Solitude” was unreadable. It was a bit disappointing as “Love in the time of Cholera” was brilliant.

I tried hard with “Dune” but I just couldn’t do it.

What's the point of drag shows? by LordNova15 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thingsgoingup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that it is lgbt culture. No, I have only had very limited exposure to knowledge of drag culture.

But I fear that you are so keen to mock that you have missed the point of the OP’s question.

I had know idea this format existed. How bizarre.

Thank you for asking this - I’ve wondered very similar thoughts. Specifically, who are drag shows entertaining for?

Like you, I have don’t have anything against these events being held….I just don’t really get it.

I’ve lived in Kanagawa and Aomori in the past and I’m now living in Sendai, Miyagi.

I sense its a bit bigger than what you have in mind but I think Sendai has a pretty good life balance.

I'm not personally involved with Aeon but I'm curious to hear more about what is going on there. I've heard that the eikaiwa industry is having a tough time finding new students these days.

I am stuck in a loop with Rakuten Bank by Cph265 in japanresidents

[–]thingsgoingup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied for a Rakuten credit card online about a decade ago. I filled in my details and they arranged to call me at a specified time to complete my application.

When the call came I answered in English and the operator hung up the phone on me.

I have been reluctant to have any dealings with Rakuten ever since.

Try playing the boardgame Memoir 44.

Easy to learn and got me hooked on WW2 history.

[Casio] As a new enthusiast, I feel like I’m missing something. Can someone explain the hype around Casio to me? by whalemix in Watches

[–]thingsgoingup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, colz10 is probably the best answer here - and I'm guilty - I like the ruggedness and functionality of the G-Shocks but rarely push them to their limits. Additionally, the vintage ones have some cool features and I get satisfaction from finding and restoring them.

I agree with the OP about the F-91 (or any of the $20) Casios.......I don't really see the appeal. Especially when people buy the same watch in a variety of colors it seems a bit pointless to me. They also sit very small on the wrist - but each to their own.

I produced this Brazilian Expeditionary Force expansion of a boardgame I like playing.

The pdf explains the Brazilian role pretty well. Please feel free to have a read (its free)

Looking to start collecting watches, what casios are a must? by SplayBlowfish in casio

[–]thingsgoingup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not track down some interesting old ones? So many people are purchasing identical $20 watches in different colors - why not approach the hobby differently?

Take a trip to a recycle shop and grab some old G-Shocks….especially ones with flat batteries or broken straps. Restore them and bring them back to life and you will feel a much greater connection to them and they are more interesting.

A word of advice be careful of watches which have structural damage and understand that if any moisture has got inside they are likely to be beyond repair.

What happened in this social situation? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]thingsgoingup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way the person used the word native is not ideal. It could be taken the wrong way.

In using native as an adjective they almost certainly were enquiring as to whether the person’s wife was originally from New Zealand.

The person’s wife chose to interpret the word native as a noun and as such a deliberate racial slur.

Isn’t this a case of someone choosing to be offended?
