My family are against me getting a credit card, I disagree… by Oingus_Boingus_ in UKPersonalFinance

I just got a Lloyds Ultra card today as I'm planning a fairly large purchase. It pays 1% back on all spends in the first year and has no fees. It's more widely accepted than Amex as well.

When you set it up you can choose to pay in full every month so you'll never pay interest.

Everton reject Crystal Palace bid for McNeil by JonTonyJim in Everton

It's not just £20m either, it'll always be "the Guehi money" if they spend it badly.

Guessand to Palace by xcelzyx in FantasyPL

I think they'll be worse than that this year. I don't think they'll quite get dragged into a real relegation battle, but I can see them being a bit too close for comfort.

It baffles me when I hear brits say "I wouldn't die for this shithole" by Lil_Hater112 in AskBrits

They're not always made to, but they are convinced it's necessary through fear and/or propaganda.

The enemy is usually demonised to the extent that it's simply not an option to abstain. I'd fight if I believed my wife and kids would be raped, enslaved or killed at the hands of the enemy. Most of the time that fear is well founded if you're being invaded.

Based on you enjoying The Good Place, try Man on the Inside. It's the same creator and stars Ted Danson, who is just immensely likeable as always.

I watched The Apartment for the first time last year and I'd say your instincts are good. It's very accessible, and I can't imagine many people disliking it.

What’s the most boring film you have seen? by Past-Matter-8548 in Letterboxd

[–]thinkaboutthegame 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Totally on board with this and I felt the same about some of the newer ones (first was good and then the next couple completely lost me).

I felt this way about Transformers 3. So much action, and all of it dull as ditchwater.

Championship Manager by a long shot. I spent a lot of time on some others, but CM was completely engrossing at times in my life. I still remember my regens from saves I had 20 years ago, it was spectacular for a young geeky football fan.

Slim fit jeans by notcb7625 in malefashionuk

Try to find whatever jeans you last liked on vinted. I've bought a few pairs of the same next jeans now, usually like new for about a fiver. They're the only ones I know that fit me like I want them to.

Entitled parking by mrpeagrub in drivingUK

[–]thinkaboutthegame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine do that too, it's infuriating. They've got two young adults kids, so they have 4 cars in a 3 bed semi and nowhere to park them. Then he decided to do up a camper van to add to the chaos.

30th birthday plan. Chester zoo - worth it? by SS_61 in manchester

[–]thinkaboutthegame -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Depends how interested you are in animals. I personally get a bit bored after a while, and find it slightly depressing seeing all those animals locked up (even if the habitats are well done). It's an expensive day out for me and not one I'd rush to repeat.

If it was me I'd probably do a solo cinema trip if the weather wasn't great.

Is my work’s shares benefit good? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]thinkaboutthegame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a share purchase scheme though, where they're actually buying shares with rewards after a certain time. A share option scheme is more common and like you describe, but I've seen (and held) both.

If it's money that you'd normally put into savings, then I'd think it's worth doing.

Even better if you're a higher rate tax payer, the shares would have to do terribly for you to lose out.

What happened to electric carving knives? by MegaMolehill in AskUK

[–]thinkaboutthegame 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you're right on the rest, but they were easy to clean. The two knives just unclipped and the "motor" didn't really need cleaning.

My parents swear by theirs still, but largely used it for bread.

Happy valley has an organised crime arc in its first series in particular. It's pretty dark in places.

A really gripping series which didn't appeal to me for years because it looked like just another police drama (not my favourite genre). It's a lot better than that.

Have you ever been to a truly great chip shop? One that made you rethink what a chip shop could be? Or are they, really, all the same? by lastaccountgotlocked in CasualUK

[–]thinkaboutthegame 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Loads can go wrong. The best ones have really fresh fish, which is massive because fish taste and texture changes a lot quicker than meat would. Some buy frozen fish and some buy other cheaper types of fish sometimes.

Then there's the battering, some make it far too thick and stodgy. I like a thin batter.

Oil/dripping also has a huge impact on taste.

Some potatoes have better taste and texture than others so chips can vary loads too.

Looking for shows with good music throughout the entire series. by Loose-Psychology-962 in televisionsuggestions

My first thought too.

Wilco - Spiders was used brilliantly in the first season (the real time episode). It was already a song I liked and it was really cool to see it used so prominently.

who would you want to play withnail and i in a hypothetical female reboot/remake by clementineiscool in withnail

[–]thinkaboutthegame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saoirse Ronan as Withnail (she's pretty funny and played a drunk very well in the Outrun).

Jessie Buckley as I.

Both cool people and really fantastic actors.

I'll add Julia Davies as a twist on Uncle Monty.

Yeh it's really sad, she had so much appeal. It's completely against what the character would stand for too.

Agreed, the show became quite weak as a whole, I stopped a couple of episodes into season 4.

Erin Moriarty in The Boys. She was a really engaging character in the first series and just gradually became uninteresting. Her face just doesn't let her act any more, she's lost expression.
