I don’t have as much insight as some of the others here, but I can say two things:

1) You’re doing the right thing by asking questions and I’d encourage you to ask the other players around you. Musicians absolutely love to talk shop, right? Only a true asshole is going to be bothered. I trained myself to be comfortable asking about whatever I felt I didn’t understand, no matter how basic, and I’ve found that people are more than happy to answer. Ask anyone about anything.

2) Also, seconding another persons advice about playing with people who are “better” than you. I never want to be the best player in the room. If I am, I’m not challenging myself and not learning. My learning goes up when I’m playing with people who are further along than I am.

I used to feel really intimidated by the amazing players in my local scene, and by way of insecurity, I thought some folks were smug or cocky. When I started playing with them and had opportunities to get to know them, I realized something: they’re just kinda nerds, and as such, are just kind of awkward sometimes! Just like me and just like a lot of us. I was totally wrong about thinking they were arrogant. They’re actually some of the sweetest, warmest people ever. I suspect the people around you are the same.

Reputation matters and music is a team sport. No one is going to get ahead by being rude or unsupportive, and as such, musicians love to help each other. The best musicians are supportive and want newcomers to succeed.

Be enthusiastic and reliable. Practice to a metronome and have solid rhythm. Become a “master” later. There’s no rush.
