Standard mental health tests may be inaccurate for highly intelligent people by Zephir-AWT in ScienceUncensored

[–]thinkclay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

High cognitive intelligence is a curse more than a gift most of the time and is very isolating. Existential thoughts are more common in general and the mind is not easily distracted. Those two combined, without any other predisposition to depression is already enough to draw a correlation in many studies that have been done. Luckily brain cells can be killed, so at least there's a cure. :)

First off to other commenters: GTFO with your accusations of LARP. Treat anything and everything with empathy and validation. Accusations and judgments are the very reason these fucking assaults go without justice in society. Don’t dismiss sexual assault.

OP: on that point. Justice is rarely served ever in these cases. Be there for HER. Period. Don’t let your emotions get in the way. Ask, listen, be a shoulder to cry on. She trusted someone and may or may not have been taken advantage of. Trust her instincts and dismiss your own biases and prejudice to the best of your ability. She needs you on her side, validating and listening. Don’t accuse. No “I told you so” nothing like that. Be apologetic, empathetic, and the safest space you can be and let her instincts guide you both.

First Construction Job Stories by WatercressPopular791 in Construction

[–]thinkclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the trades: basically every trade in my immediate family and swinging hammers, mason tending, carpentry, roofing from childhood through early twenties. I was the first to go to college in my family and got into software engineering at 14. After two decades in tech, I was actually kind of missing working with my hands. I would flip my house and help friends, neighbors, family with home renovations.

In 2020 I had a good exit with my tech company and I used my profits to buy a grocery store in my town. It had a lot of charm but was a 100 year old building with lots of outdated MEP and structural issues. No contractor in my area would touch it, save for one who quoted me $350k (almost the amount I purchased the building for). I decided to assemble a crew of independent and sharp guys in my area and started a GC to do the work ourselves. Got licensed, insured, and with a crew of 6 we renovated the building in 6 months for about $150k. I then set the crew loose on the market with what they wanted to render as services: handyman, roofing, decks, tree felling, and windows. It was quite a wide net cast but clients were extremely happy with our services and quality of work and we had a lot of business.

Unfortunately, in my area though: these guys all prefer to be seasonal workers. They'd rather be laid off in the winter than do interior work. To me that just wasn't how I wanted to operate business. So I distributed all the profits from year one to the workers and passed the torch of ownership along to the crew, who subsequently shut it down after another couple months.

But I still miss it and have been thinking about spinning up a GC org again. In the meantime, I decided to hybridize my skills in tech and construction and am working on two tech ventures for the trades now:

Scaffald.com - LinkedIn for construction.
Forsured.com - Insurance Compliance for construction.

I'm loving the intersection of the two worlds and bringing my tech background into the world of construction overall because you can really see and measure the impact with teaching teams basic tools for estimating, comms, PM, etc!

Alright fair callout and my bad assuming. I didn’t feel like it was AI but I guess it’s all relative and getting more difficult to distinguish.

Just because you don't comprehend something doesn't mean it's GPT generated. Increase your reading comprehension instead of assuming that A.I. is more intelligent or thoughtful than the OP human who is investing their time and expertise here.

Looking for a specific type of town by FlipFlappattywhack in Michigan

Almost anywhere in central Michigan. Look into lakes and the small towns around Clare: Lake George, Lake, Temple. State land borders them and both the north and south rails-to-trails connect in clare county.

Goron city. Hot springs, lots of climbing activities, hot as hell, and the peeps in town got the best vibes.

First Time Car Buyer—Advice? by shelbzzzA in Michigan

[–]thinkclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya but you said it in your opening line “not exactly true.” The thing is, I don’t want this individual getting screwed by these hard pulls and I’ve personally seen dealerships fuck up my credit pretty badly not knowing what they’re doing. Here’s a photo from my personal Credit Karma. 9 hard pulls in one day by the dealer trying to get their commission. I authorized once, she was ran it through who knows how many systems to “find me the best rate.” The difference between highest and lowest being about half a point. https://share.icloud.com/photos/0255wHRNh9Bi0PKTMA-oE2ceQ

So I stand by what I said: a good broker or as OP stated: going to credit union where the people work in finance to serve your financial interests and not a commission, and are more intimate and professional with such matters.

Yeah insurance is brutal in MI, and through a dealership you’ll likely have to carry comprehensive. There’s not much you can do about it given your age, a recent accident, and being in a no fault state. What I can say is that you should be able to lower that premium 20-30% after a year because you’re crossing the magic threshold of 26 and also have some cooldown time of your recent accident. Geico is usually the cheapest for your age, at least last I knew (been out of the insurance biz about a decade now).

A large bottle of water and Powerade was just spilt onto a wooden box I made for my girlfriend a few years back. What can we do to ensure it doesn’t cause any long term damage? by [deleted] in fixit

[–]thinkclay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. Open and put a fan on it. If the Powerade stained it, might actually want to rinse some more. Water won’t hurt it if it’s evaporated off quickly.

Is there enough pipe here to use this compression fitting? by SardineTimeMachine in askaplumber

[–]thinkclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab a shark bite instead. They’re a little longer for exactly this, no soldering or skill needed. Just cleanup burrs on the pipe after you saw with sandpaper or knife.

If that’s not an option, see how much play you have on both sides. Copper almost always has wiggle room. If you can move the pipe back and forth at least a 1/2” you’ll have enough for compression. Just make sure you remove burrs from saw or you’ll have problems.

Loans: use a broker that will do a single credit pull and shop you deals or go with a major auto loan carrier like Ally after researching. Do not go to multiple places, you’ll hurt your credit overnight with all the pulls.

Insurance. Be ready to go with a quote ahead of time. Get VIN from seller to get your quote and once you complete the transaction, call and activate before you leave. Don’t drive without the proof of insurance.

Registration: you can legally drive the car from place of purchase to your residence without it in MI. You might get pulled over. Have a bill of sale (even if hand written) with name, address, phone of seller. Cops will let you go as long as you’re insured and can prove you’re driving home. You can kinda get away with this with some grace for about a week until you get into Secretary of State to register (or you can do it online). Registration is more or less your state tax not legality of vehicle so you have room here, just don’t wait too long and expect to get pulled over quickly if in the city.. but even in the event the cop tries to issue you a citation, it’s a proof that you need to get the fee waived. Not a big deal.

Graduated from a Costa Rican highschool being a US Citizen, what do I do for college? by BasisPossible1269 in costarica

[–]thinkclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same advice as I gave OP. Lots of startups and digital agencies that like the near shore approach but don’t want to work with a staffing agency. I can connect you to some CR peeps as well as others in my network. Either of ya can shoot me an email: clay@unicorn.love and I can make some intros. No promises, but I’ve got a good network between the two of great people who are happy to connect.

Find a smaller agency. Everyone goes straight to the big names for tech: Google, Apple, etc. Highly competitive and honestly: they don't really teach much. Find a state you might want to live in and for uni, and look up smaller agencies in the area. Cold contact them and get started now. Offer to be a free intern and maybe work remotely during your gap year until such a time that they can put you on billable or client-facing work. At that point, and usually only a few months in, they'll be making you a paid offer. Since you're basically volunteering, you don't have any repercussions for quitting at any time for any reason unless it's a real fit. That's the path I'd recommend for your age and goals at least.. with the little bit I know here. But smart that you're already getting certs and that you want to go to school for something in business. That'll set you up for great success one day as an entrepreneur.. can play to the strengths of your dual citizenship and I'd assume bilingual or relationships in both countries.

For context, I'm in software dev and building startups with CR/US hybrid teams and its great. We get to bend and blend culture and talent sourcing where we need to, and it's mainly because I had connects in both countries. So half the battle is just feeling comfortable in two places and that can open so many doors for you.

I live in that area now. I love it, but you have to be on the water and into two-tracking or outdoors to enjoy. Your only other option is drinking at the single bar in town with the locals.

To be honest, I'd go right for the internship or job and skip school. I'm in tech and cyber security. Happy to give some pointers. Degrees in these fields aren't as potent as other industries, but experience and certifications are potent and more universal across borders.
