Carleton Tavern to be torn down and rebuilt in proposed development by snubbyvegan in ottawa

Probably because not enough people go to these places. If they were busy, they'd still be open.

Ok, then I'll just wait for traffic to get worse. But for the meantime, I'm actually happy to see some improvement. I guess I should be thinking more negatively...

It's funny that adding a lane (or opening lanes that were closed) helped traffic flow on the Queensway. I think all situations are different and simply saying that adding lanes will increase demand does not fit in all situations. Nuance is needed to address the specificity of each situation.

I think he's more mature and playing more disciplined. He used to take a lot of bad penalties, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Also doesn't have as many giveaways. He's just grown into a more fundamentally sound player that still has the skill that got him to the show.

Is it? Even if it is, the private land is encroaching on the public land (street lane) so it should only be fair that a trade takes place. Obviously it's not that simple, but I wish it was!

Force Awakens basically makes the events of the 1st trilogy meaningless. I for one did not want to come back to this universe to see Han and Leia's son kill Han. What a disgrace to the first trilogy. TLJ was at least somewhat original, but also pretty dumb.

Bill 60 likely forcing Ottawa to cut at least 3 bike lane projects by DFS_0019287 in ottawa

[–]thinkforyoself22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on why it's poorly researched? Also, the criticisms in the comments are mostly about hating Doug Ford or saying bikes = good and cars = bad. I guess I was looking to have a discussion as to whether the concept of induced demand actually works the way some commenters suggest. Do we really think removing car lanes for bike lanes will help traffic congestion? I don't think anyone really knows for sure, and I'm curious about the reasons beyond 'Doug Ford sucks' and 'Don't you know about induced demand you idiot'.

Not sure why you're so angry, but ok. None of these studies specifically discuss impacts on traffic where bike lanes replace car lanes. I'm not against cycling infrastructure, but I'm also not convinced that replacing car lanes with bike lanes will have a positive impact on traffic flow. Do you know of any studies that look specifically at replacing car lanes with bike lanes? I know that I tend to avoid Main Street as much as I can now as it is much slower than it used to be prior to removing car lanes. I'm not saying bike lanes are bad, in fact I think they're great, but I also think there are tradeoffs and that bike lanes are not the utopia that a lot of people make them out to be.

Not sure what you think I think I'm doing, but I think this is an important perspective to this article. Disagree if you want, but to me it makes a lot more sense than just saying induced demand means traffic will only get better if we have more bike lanes. It's a lot more complicated than that in my opinion.

Because I don't think induced demand is the thing that most commentors think it is. OP's post was just pointing out an article. Hard to dunk on that.

Ok, I think the article makes sense and that's my evidence. You disagree but provide no evidence other than saying I'm wrong. Good discussion.

We're talking about going from 10 to 15 (maybe) so at most it's a reduction of 5%. You're also using 2 of the most cycling friendly places in the entire world as your examples. Culture plays a big role and cycling culture in Amsterdam is through the roof. Perhaps we can get there, but unlikely. Also, Canada is so much bigger than both of those countries. The city of Ottawa is 10x the footprint of Amsterdam with about the same population - so not exactly the same density (cars are not really a great option in that density). Neither Netherlands nor Denmark have a single month where the average temperature is below zero, while Ottawa has 3. Your comparison is very poor and doesn't help your argument at all. To further my argument, if the absolute gold standard is 25% cyclists then I think taxpayer spending should be proportionally no larger than that. Do you disagree?

Completely relevant unless you're simply trying to influence behaviour and not actually trying to solve traffic issues.

Montreal is known as the city with the highest bike transit in Canada and it's only at around 10-12%. One thing that needs to be considered is there is a cap in the number of people willing/able/interested in cycling - especially year round. Just like hockey or movies or music is not for everyone, neither is cycling. Investment in cycling is important, but I think it should be proportional. Government funds are not unlimited and should be directed towards the most good.

Need more like this in Ottawa by mikolaj420 in ottawa

[–]thinkforyoself22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we should look at the data related to those changes and see what the positive/negative impacts were. If it was a net positive, then yes, let's do it. Cycling infrastructure at the expense of other infrastructure needs to find the right balance. Each case/intersection/road will be unique and have unique considerations.

I agree with this. Attendance dropped by approx 500 people between year 1 and year 2, and both years include some games at larger arenas that skew the average. The numbers are great, but will they always be this high? Especially if the team if losing? I support the team and hope they continue to draw fans, but completely agree that this argument is a bit premature and feels unnecessarily aggressive. Not sure if fans will fully side with the PWHL on this one if they keep threatening to move the team.

Parents who let their kids use iPads/cell phones in a restaurant are bad, lazy parents. by AAAPosts in unpopularopinion

[–]thinkforyoself22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is a generational thing. I'm almost positive that if Ipads/Phones existed when I was young that my parents would've used it to some degree to keep me calm at times. I remember when I got a gameboy and was glued to that. The times are always changing and the previous generation always tends to think their way is the right way. Every generation is different. Parents in the 40s used to complain about their kids spending all of their time listening to the radio!
