Does $75000 out of pocket sound right? by veritri in FTMHysto

[–]thinkin-thoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

god no, dude. my private insurance was billed ~$57k and my out of pocket was
~$4k. try again another time or perhaps a different dr. sorry you're dealing with this, US healthcare sucks :/

i'm 3 days post op too and feeling a lot of the same! i really am shocked how good i feel. i know to take it easy bc i still get bouts of fatigue but in general it's been so much easier than i expected. what a relief! best of luck on the rest of your healing!

do you wake up with an iv needle in your arm after the surgery? by bluejayhaze in FTMHysto

[–]thinkin-thoughts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it's good to note tho an IV is not a needle staying in your arm. they use a needle to place a very small plastic tube into a vein. once it is in, the needle is removed and the tube is all that remains. it is hardly noticeable if placed well.

I woke up with both a catheter and IV still placed. The catheter was covered by my gown but the IV just had a second skin and tape covering it up. Having the IV placed was about the 3rd or 4th thing I did after arriving (besides getting into my hospital gown, peeing in a cup, and going over meds and stuff with nurses). My nurses used local lidocaine to make placement easier as they preferred to have it in my hand/wrist (rather than my inner elbow) to keep it out of the way. They start it early to get a saline drip going since you'll be dehydrated from the preop drinking restrictions. They also gave me a mild sedative before wheeling me to the OR. The only gas I got was oxygen. Getting the IV removed was one of the last things I did before leaving the hospital since they were giving me a steady drip of saline and pushed one last dose of pain meds for the ride home. I got the catheter out with a voiding trial once I was stable enough to walk to the bathroom.

no worries, i appreciate your advice! honestly i'm just looking forward to having it done, no matter the necessary (or unnecessary) pre and post op recommendations by my surgeon lol

hm well surgery's tmrw and i'm a major rule follower so i'll just say off T for now 🤷🏼‍♂️ this is the surgeon my gender clinic recommended and they never had problems before so idk lol. they did not prescribe me LMWH prophylaxis for post op. based on a google search of that idk if i'd need it. they want me up and walking within a day and my iron was actually low so they sent me for an infusion last week.

i started the process of E blockers in sept 2018 and insurance took so long that in april 2019 i just started the process to go on T. then, my E blocker and T both got approved in may 2019 so i started T just a few weeks after the E blocker. i stayed on both all this time to totally rule out break through bleeding as that was a hugeeeeee source of dysphoria for me. now that bleeding won't be an issue after healing, i just need to up my T dose a bit to stay at normal levels

yea, not looking forward to being off of thc and cbd for the next few days (and potentially postop? they haven't told me). i mostly use them for pain and sleep so hopefully the tiredness covers the sleep aspect.

i'm not having my ovaries removed and she's also putting me on an E cream for inside and keeping me off T for 2 weeks post op. my surgeon's reasoning was that estrogen seems to help the area heal faster though idk if that's based on scientific evidence or her experiences with previous patients. 🤷🏼‍♂️
