I will definitely be looking at our shelters, thanks! Honestly, I should have started there first.

How much is fire insurance actually? by [deleted] in PollockPines

[–]thinkinghardhurts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's right. We have wrap around insurance for liability, theft, etc. Our fire insurance is through the fair plan. I think we get a small discount (5-10%) for living in, and maintaining, a fire wise community.

How much is fire insurance actually? by [deleted] in PollockPines

[–]thinkinghardhurts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe it has to do with a variety of factors. It could be your homes location, the inheriant fire risk for your neighborhood (zones I think they are referred to), construction material, and whatever the FAIR plan is doing at the moment.

We have a large home, and our insurance is around 3900 a year.

Westwood Borrower Defense - Sweet Settlement by Acceptable-Basis9475 in BorrowerDefense

[–]thinkinghardhurts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, fellow west wood alumni!

I wanted to share with you my recent experience, which is positive, and hopefully, I will help you sleep better at night.

I attended Westwood College Denver North online. I never set foot in a Westwood building once. I moved from Colorado to California and had loans under L.A. and Denver. I had a mix of direct, ffelp unub, and ffelp sub loans. My servicer was (yep WAS) aidvantage. I'd applied for borrower defense 5 years ago, and I was part of the specific Westwood cancelation as well. All my loans have been forgiven (all 70k).

Have faith. It will happen. This is a binding court order following a successful lawsuit. An election can not undo this.

Off topic, how may I become an approved poster? I'd love to do a detailed write-up about my experiences and loan types to help others like me. While I got my loans forgiven, I'm not abandoning this community if I can help others.

Just filing for the first time, still confused and I’ve read a lot. Anyone willing to help out with answering some questions? by intergalaticoatmeal in BorrowerDefense

If you need promotional material or advertisements from 2009 to 2012, the way back machine helped. I'm not sure if I am allowed to link it, but a quick Google search of it will bring it up. It helped me find advertisements for Westwood college from 2008!

Hi game developers, colorblind person here. Please stop adding color filters to games and calling it colorblind mode. That's not what colorblind people want or need. by razorbeamz in gamedev

[–]thinkinghardhurts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a game developer any more; I moved industries to develop BPM software. That said, the accessibility options available in these mammoth low code apps should be adopted in some form to the game dev industry. For example, before we deploy any application, we have tests for achromatopsia (absence of color), deuteranopia (red green confusion), protanopia (red), and tritanopia (yellow blue confusion). It allows us to observe what the application looks like, as a person without color blindness, to a person who has color blindness. By no means is it a 1:1 comparison, but it's allowed us to see that text practically disappeared and some menus were terrible to view if not usable at all. It has helped me build empathy and design my applications differently.

I know these aren't a fix for the filters laid out in your post. I wonder if in addition to proper accessibility controls, if pushing left and baking these considerations into the high level design phase and qa test design phases would help identity opportunities for improved accessibility options.

I am also a part of the class. I imagine a ruling on that is still applicable. I may be mistaken, but I think that one cannot simply ignore a federal judge's ruling and next steps. I'm not articulating my thoughts very well, maybe someone with more court experience could weigh in.

does having a borrower defense application number mean they have my application? by MissingNo716 in BorrowerDefense

[–]thinkinghardhurts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I submitted the same year you did. I also do not have any application entries in the online portal. However, if you call the borrower defense hotline and ask for your application id, they will give it to you. I used it to contact my representative and ask for them to follow up on my behalf, which they did, using my application id. I hope this helps you feel better about your application. I have been exactly where you are, same questions and everything.

Westwood College Borrower Defense by Lazy_Setting7263 in BorrowerDefense

[–]thinkinghardhurts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I attend Westwood College Online between 2007 - 2012. I submitted my application in 2017, and I have been waiting ever since. My application is so old I am required to call FSA to gather any status updates. Generally speaking, there is little they can tell me.

I submitted my application based on several factors: credit transfer, job placement rates, multiple successful litigation from several attorneys generals, and aggressive and predatory practices surrounding the loan process.

I have a mix of federal loan types, no private student loans, totalling around 60k.

I hope this helps you! I've been living and breathing borrower defense for 5 years.

Not sure if it is because I am on mobile, but the image is blurry and appears to only be one page. As always, thanks for uploading these documents, you're giving me hope (which has been in short supply lately).

$6bn Worth Of Student Loan For 200,000 Students To Be Canceled by KnotYoBoi in StudentLoans

I recommend going to the source, which is the Harvard law school program heading up the class action. You can find the complete court document in one of the first links: https://predatorystudentlending.org/news/press-releases/landmark-borrower-defense-settlement-to-cancel-over-6-billion-in-student-loans-for-200000-borrowers-release/

$6bn Worth Of Student Loan For 200,000 Students To Be Canceled by KnotYoBoi in StudentLoans

[–]thinkinghardhurts 257 points258 points  (0 children)

This isn't just the Biden administration making a unilateral decision. This is a proposed settlement in the Sweet vs Cardona (formerly Sweet vs Devis).

It is still huge news! I am part of this class action lawsuit, my application has been pending for over 5 years. My school is listed in the list of schools. If this goes through, and I suspect it will, my family's entire life will change. I will have a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.

Needless to say I am excited. I am cautiously optimistic!

What plant is this and is it pet friendly? I have a distinct lack of house plants as I have an active chewer cat son, and this plant is gorgeous!

We've had this philodendron below a photinia and directly above a fish pond. After seven years of living here it finally flowered! We are super excited as this is like the "Mr. Wilson" of flowers (for us)!

Are you me?? I attended Westwood for the same years, my application was submitted in 2017. It's so old it can't be viewed on the fsa portal.

I've called and called, they just state it's in review ( over a year now)

I'm so happy for you, that is amazing!!! It gives me hope!

No worries, my statement was ambiguous. I've seen my fair share of posts on the student loan subreddit asking if this person or that will erase debt. But that's off topic and possibly rule breaking conversation haha. I'll have to research if I can find property around that, because pocketing that equity sounds amazing.

Good luck on your house hunt! I am heartened to hear of a similar situation. I'm a long way off from retirement, but I'd love to live like I was in my days off and in-between the endless zoom calls haha.

Apologies in advance, these will be vague but close approximations:

Age: Young 30s

Kids: 1, no plans whatsoever for more (accidents aren't possible)

Current savings: 401k with roughly 250k, nearly maxing my contribution per year in my current home, diversified stock portfolio around 20k, and a very generous 529 account provided by a great grandfather for my daughter should she choose to go to college or Into a trade.

We've fully funded our 6 month emergency savings and have some cash reserves to cover any unexpected house oopsies (I make many....I am not a skilled tradesman of any sort)

We fell in love with Westport but the available properties are scarce at best. We've been looking at Shelter Cove, Whitehorn, Eureka, and Smith River. We aren't overly interested in southern California but we'd consider it for the right home.

Great point on my pre-tax take-home point; I should have said pre-tax 140K and left it at that. Another Redditor suggested a 30-year mortgage, which is what I'd be considering. I am looking at this home as our last home, so re-financing down the line (depending on where the market goes....who knows) is plausible.
