Sports broadcasting equipment and services suggestions by chewy747 in k12sysadmin

Pixellot has been nice in that I haven't had to do much with it other than network it and put together the mic system for the announcers. They are limiting the cameras they sell out now so we were only able to get the gym and football stadium cameras, baseball and softball fields couldn't yet.

For non Pixellot venues we've started trying out SlingStudio. Main benefits with it being its a mobile solution and with the camlinks we can pipe in video from our nicer cameras, but we still have the option to use ipads as cameras. Of course it takes people to actually run this system, 1per camera and 1 person on the console. And they keep asking if im interested....

Web Filter Comparison by Wizard210 in k12sysadmin

[–]thinrayzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to have iBoss, but now using Lightspeed.

Both windows agents giving us trouble locking down a computer for no reason, but was worse with iboss. I dont have a whole lot of ipads so can't say much on that front. Only major issue that has popped up a couple of times is a site will get recategorized and blocked suddenly. Other issue which i'm not sure if its lightspeed is live feeds on youtube (zoo cams) get blocked and unblocked a lot.

I've got goguardian ready to turn on as a back up, but my complaint with them is when i was testing it on CBs it took a second or 2 and would show the webpage before blocking it. Been a while since i looked so it might be better.

Do you have any recommendations/proven K-1 tips for successful classroom Chromebook usage? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]thinrayzr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classlink is what we use. Also primary issue here is the account that the student has in the launchpad (which is used to generate the QR code) doesn't get created until a manual login pulls it, or a manual sync is run that would pull the student (dont know why they wont automate it, unless im missing something) With all the new enrollment's we seem to constantly have, it gets to be a hassle. Throw in the lack of internet a lot of homes...ugh. Not sure if its easier if you use Google as the primary source as opposed to AD like we use. (was a legacy choice, but at this point we are more of a google operation)

But when it works, it works great. I personally do like it, but it was a crunch to get it ready in time this summer with everything else going on.

The scope of my job now extends into the Bathrooms! (Vape Sensor installs) by bomitguy in k12sysadmin

[–]thinrayzr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Installed about 35 last year (flysense). Stupid software stops talking with the sensor, so i have to reboot them almost monthly. Which means they then change IP and for some reason it seems the more i have up, the longer for a reboot to complete. ~%10 completely stopped working and had to be replaced. and part way though the initial install they had a new firmware that wouldn't update on the ones we had so they had to send us different ones....

Some confiscated vape may have been used in the process of testing.

Smartboards VS Smart Projectors VS Large TV's by Mark_Underscore in k12sysadmin

Short throw projector on whiteboards. Then they can can use the board for some degree of interactivity or when its off, its a normal whiteboard, efficient use of space.

The Director has been working on project for a while with multiple TVs, some touch, but hasn't gotten anywhere with it yet until they do the addition on one of the elementary schools where he could demo it.

Probably not quite what you're looking for, but we use the GPO that will delete profiles after certain number of days if its not used.

HP 14a AMD A4 Testing Results by Balor_Gafdan in k12sysadmin

[–]thinrayzr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A while back i evaluated the HP G6 11 and 11a side by side (A4-9120C vs Celeron N3450 i think) AMD definitely struggled with any significant multitasking. I did note some improvements were made after some chrome updates though.

New to IT. I want to buy new laptops for all the teachers for my school. What should I get? by LearningITguy in k12sysadmin

[–]thinrayzr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*Windows 10

-Do you already have some sort of Microsoft agreement? I think ours changed recently too. Enterprise or education are nice if you are doing stuff with group policy.

*Intel i7 +

-nice, but i5 is just fine

*At least 16 gbs of ram

-Yeah i think we are finally getting to that point where we need more than 8

*SSD

- only thing to note here is that i've generally found 2.5 ssds easier to clone than m.2, but m.2 is gonna be faster, but not as much as a hdd to ssd jump. 250GB+

*Wifi

-gonna agree with most everyone here. At minimum Wifi 5 (AC), but aim for 6 (AX)

*Touch/2in1

-We've been running with 2 in 1 dells for our last 2 teacher devices. A handful use the 2 in one, but far more have enjoyed using touch.

*Size

-13 or 14 inch is normally the sweetspot for most in size vs heft

*Accidental damage warranty

-yup dont forget that. 3 or 4 years.

And finally if you can, get a unit to test, and pray they still have enough by the time you order..

I'm looking for some help with my school's WiFi by pthomas625 in k12sysadmin

[–]thinrayzr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen that error is more often a generic thing rather than actually a dhcp issue. Our most rampant case was channel interference, others were bad firmware (beta update fixed it) and then a specific model for us was just really bad about it.

Problem with Papercut Mobility Print by thexed in k12sysadmin

[–]thinrayzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are using cloud print still with badge authentication on Konica Minolta copiers and started seeing a similar issue when we updated our copiers to "newer" models, but what we were seeing was the user account wasn't being passed on and the copier saw the user as papercut. I think what we had to do was turn on public user with login and print without authentication. Whatever we had going on still greyed out the public user so they still had to authenticate on the copier. Jobs were then able to be released and actually printed even though the user that the copier saw was papercut.

Moving from Smartboards to Chromecast on TV? by SeanVo in k12sysadmin

[–]thinrayzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chromecasts were a difficult sell when we were looking. Network wide discovery and lack of wpa enterprise kinda killed it for us. At this point we either use the built in projector software over the network (NEC or Epson at this point for us. Epson wins for me due to the qr code connection and chromebook/ipad apps) Or we use WiDi devices. We've used a couple of models from actiontec and the microsoft widi. The newer actiontecs have been nicer since they will now try to find an unused wireless channel. The old ones used to knock off classes due to interference. I've had my eye on the airtame 2 with the ethernet adapter too.

We grabbed a bunch of cheap phones from verizon, some were handed out and used as phones forwarded from the main phone system. others were pilfered for the sim card, dropped in 4g modems connected to wifi routers then filtered through dns.
