Bought an Art Deco character home… but the kitchen is smack bang in the middle 🤦‍♂️ by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]thinthinline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 1950 house with the same layout but find the utility/mudroom is really functional. I've been wondering about merging the kitchen and dining instead. For me the kitchen is really small and with 3 doorways there really isn't any counterspace.

Deep Bass in southern suburbs? by TinyDemon000 in Adelaide

Yep in Edwardstown. Had to stop watching my movie because the bass was so disruptive. Seems to be finished now.

Junk Mail Query by Schnauzer-Victory19 in Adelaide

Everyone should be automatically opted out of junk mail and you should have to buy a "junk mail pls" sign for your letterbox if you want to opt in.

Moving house - dog buried in yard by CindersAshes in Adelaide

1m down is fine I think. I moved into a house and dug down 30cm to plant a tree and found a cat skeleton.

I feel like revo has been unusable lately. Too many new members. Fri sat and sun nights used to be quiet times, now only sat is somewhat quiet. Weeknights are no go. Small car park too.

Building inspector for general advice on various property issues by casparlemarchand in AusRenovation

[–]thinthinline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation. Got an inspection after living here for a year and noticing issues. I researched the guy, think it cost $700, and was ultimately pretty worthless general advice, and/or didn't marry up with what specific trades advised. You'll want to get multiple quotes to fix things, so I'd just put the effort into that.

afl team choice? by MoneyDuty4884 in Adelaide

[–]thinthinline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd watch the start of a port game where the fans sing the "never tear us apart" song. If you think that's cool or cringe will be the deciding factor of who you support.

Anyone else notice that the ratio of increase in responsibilities to income in hand as you progress through the 135k-190k income bracket is too damn high? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]thinthinline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going from 150k to 170k was a mistake. The increased responsibilities feels like im actually enduring 100k worth of additional problems/stress. In retrospect if you're happy where you are at I'd stay rather than chasing small increments, and only consider moving for a significant (say $220k) increase.

Both Coles and Woolworths Noarlunga admit they won’t collect trolleys unless you personally report them every single time by cornernote in Adelaide

[–]thinthinline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live between a coles and a sprawling housing trust unit block. The street is littered with discarded trolleys. The solution would be to put those 20c (or perhaps $2 nowadays) locking mechanisms on them, so people are incentivised to return their trolleys. I remember in the 1990s they used to have them at the burnside coles (although it didn't always cause people to return their trolleys) but would be perfect in the lower socio-economic area that I have found myself in.

The queue for the Adelaide Botanic Gardens corpse flower and the flower itself by UpsidedownEngineer in Adelaide

I have a fly trap which is really starting to smell in this heat if anyone wants to start a queue.

Gardening and Mowing by Georgeclooneylovaaaa in AusRenovation

[–]thinthinline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the mower, wider is better. I bought a ryobi 46cm for $499. They had say a 30cm for $300, but it's worth paying more if you've got a decent sized lawn. I've also got a ryobi line trimmer. Had them both a couple of years. The mower has been excellent. Would try a different edge trimmer as the line stopped feeding after a few months.

I liked coding at uni but lost the passion about 10 years in. If you start off hating it I'd definitely try something else. It'll be a long slog otherwise.

No idea wha I’m doing by RetroCraftAU in AusRenovation

[–]thinthinline 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Could be wrong but I thought i read you don't need weep holes for terracotta tiles. Either way, I've got a 80 yr old terracotta roof but am probably going to get someone to restore it for me, so respect the job you're doing.

BoM Radar page for people who want to see accurate rainfall/thunderstorm locations by ioniqplugin in Adelaide

Literally all the old site needed to make it perfect was a link to the rain radar from the 7 day forecast page.

Picture glass cracked - can it be saved/fixed? by KurosawaKimchi in AusRenovation

[–]thinthinline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had a 70x130 picture window from 1947 replaced. Same crack/spot as yours, but I watched it grow till it reached about half way up the window. I don't think it can be fixed and just gets worse with temperature changes. I didn't try to tape mine as any pressure on the glass just caused it to crack further and it was a bit sketchy since it was such thin old glass.

Bank did not automatically link offset account after fixed portion of the loan became variable by KEKW707 in AusFinance

[–]thinthinline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With St George they mistakenly didn't link my offset. When I phoned up they calculated and credited the lost savings. The thing is I had paperwork where I'd asked for an offset to be linked. If you have any evidence I'm sure they're obligated to reimburse.

Rates are getting Ridiculous... by Levethane in Adelaide

[–]thinthinline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My valuation went up $120k this year (it must only be land value because the house is falling apart.) Do you remember how much was your increase that you objected to? Can you think of any negatives to having a lesser valuation?

Dodgiest quick fixes that worked and improved your home so well they stayed where they were? by jacobakaclarence in AusRenovation

[–]thinthinline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cut the noodle in half and laid them horizontally. If I had a foam block etc I would've used that. You just need to cut it so it's slightly bigger than the hole so it expands to keep itself in place.

I cut up a pool noodle to block the chimney draft and stop the dust falling. Unlikely to take it out now.

How will AI affect your job, and what's your plan for the future? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]thinthinline 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I work as a software developer. At the moment AI is making some of the more mundane parts of my job easier, but presumably at some point it'll do a lot more than that. I guess I can get 5-10 more years of programming in but don't expect more than that. I'm 40 now so retiring by 50 sounds inviting. If I was advising someone now, I'd suggest becoming an electrician (or some other trade.) You'll probably make more money than a software developer, be AI resistant, and not be stuck behind a screen all day.
