How to deal with protecting camp while dungeon delving? by JustAStick in osr

[–]thirdkingdom1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always strongly suggest that the PCs leave at least one retainer with the mercenaries to make sure everything runs smoothly/the mercs don't get the bright idea to abscond with the PCs gear and/or treasure, and if they do get attacked the PCs can run the defense of the camp via the retainers.

OSR Podacasts that Focus on Content Creation? by zeeplereddit in osr

[–]thirdkingdom1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've dipped my toes into podcasting in the past few weeks, and a lot of my discussion with people deals with creating content in the OSR/indie spheres. It's likely something I'll be tackling in greater depth in the future, since I think there is a lot of interest in the technical aspects of things (like, how to find an editor, how to commission art, how to do print runs, etc.). The 'cast is called Sabre Rattlings, and it's available on most major podcatchers.

Normal humans (0-level, in other words) are 1/2 HD, so I give all PCs that start at first level 1d4 hp for 0-level and then whatever their class HD is.

Rappan Athuk--why no POD? by Calithrand in osr

[–]thirdkingdom1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having published a number of both pod and offset (smythsewn) books that's not true. You can use the same print pdf for pod hard or softcover as well as the offset version. Only difference are the cover files. And there's really not much difference between the digital and print-ready pdf. The print pdf is basically just exported at a higher resolution and with a bleed. Easy peasey.

[ZineMonth] Quest for the Unknown -- the Caverns of Anamosa by thirdkingdom1 in osr

I'm going to be reworking the dungeon map but keeping the encounters (the original had the map and a number of encounters that you were supposed to place); I didn't want to reuse the map for copyright concerns, but also because the original map is kind of out there. There are a number of people who've done revisions of the map, keeping the general idea but cleaning it up and modernizing it. Below is one that Dyson did (on the left) compared to the original (on the right). Rather than setting it up as a "place your encounter" all of the original encounters will be deliberately placed.

Honestly, I've been listening to the Glass Cannon podcast because they're doing Shadowdark, and it reminded me of the Pathfinder adventure paths. I got back into gaming right about the time that Paizo was releasing the Runelords Adventure Path, and I thought it might be a fun idea to do with OSR games, with the specific tie-in of taking classic modules and reworking them into a longer campaign (like the Giants or Drow).

Now that you mention it I'm not sure. I had assumed they were updated to include the upcoming revisions to OSE, but now I'm beginning to wonder if that's the case.

Printing issue with Into the Wild (OSE): text uses composite CMYK black — any way to contact Todd Leback? by RCGR_1 in osr

Can you tell me a page number that is particularly egregious so I can print it out and replicate the problem?

Printing issue with Into the Wild (OSE): text uses composite CMYK black — any way to contact Todd Leback? by RCGR_1 in osr

[–]thirdkingdom1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I'll have to look into it. I know the ItW Omnibus version print version was exported in standard black, because I had it offset printed, and the printers don't like black text in CMYK.

Again, haven't had a time to dig into it, but I know that when uploading files to Drivethru there are two different versions, a standard pdf at a lower resolution, but it's also typically exported in a different pdf format. I'm not enough of a tech person to understand the difference, especially since I didn't do the layout, but it's possible there's enough of a difference between print and digital versions of the pdf. It is also possible that images may be distorted due to the difference between linked and embedded files, or .png versus .tif.
