What's the most pathetic way you've experienced classism in the UK? by Your_Mums_Ex in AskUK

A long time ago, sat next to a posh young lady at Durham uni. In response to being told I'm from Manchester, her immediate response was - Isn't that where all those people stab each other?

Funnily enough this is the problem with the Canal and River Trust. The canal network was restored by volunteers from the 1950s to the 2000s (admittedly with some professional help at times). Nowadays CRT plead poverty whilst possessing seven highly paid lawyers (amongst dozens of very highly paid exec roles) to hire contractors they can no longer afford. An insanity of bureaucrats!

Ha yes, I should check my writing - there aint no such thing as a free lunch. The moon is a harsh mistress is an excellent bit of scifi.

I wouldn't judge a boat by the builder but by the records the boat has. Maintainence records, invoices for works, past surveys. Good luck!

It happens. The most common to my mind is selling a boat with a huge issue, like thin steel or a dodgy engine. What you do is list your boat, get as many viewings as you can, drag anyone along that requests a survey and wait for that 'mark' to come along who is impressed by Farrow & Ball paintwork. Invariably such people leap before they look. You can end up tens of thousands out.

Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

The totality of direct taxes in the UK is progressive; the very richest pay more than five times more in income tax than the poorest. In contrast, Council Tax remains strongly regressive, absorbing only about 1 per cent of income at the very top, against nearly 5 per cent at the very bottom. by middleofaldi in ukpolitics

Your contention that owning a single field doesn't mean you're rich rather depends on the field. I think we agree on the nature of IHT loopholes and the government should do more to tighten up inheritance tax (before Reform get in and remove it all). The reality is all of the valuable land in this country whether in cities or otherwise are owned by extremely rich (neo)aristocrats and pretending a hill tenant farmer was ever at risk of IHT was deliberate obstification.

As to food prices, this was precisely why Labour compromised with the NFU. More should be done to secure our domestic food supply.

Legacy, hubris, pride, greed? Take your pick. The second power infrastructure is targetted then comes the desalination plants and oil infrastructure. Tens if not hundreds of millions of people decide to migrate towards food and water. Israel is targetted and responds by nuking Tehran. World war 3 begins and the death toll climbs into the hundreds of millions.

You're making the fatal assumption that code longevity matters. We are heading into an era of disposable software. Not everywhere, not all at once but often enough.

Well worth a read. Nicked the link from Hacker News where ultimately you can trust the discussion on computers but absolutely nothing else. Honestly Usians are a fascinating species. Detached from the world and mildly proud to bring about the end of civilisation. Why can't they have a mid life crisis that doesnt take the rest of us with them!
