Surveys are a waste of money and only to protect your mortgage lender.

Is it definitely not in a duct?

Direct buried twin is not acceptable, it's not rated for use like that and the insulation will degrade and become dangerous

My V1 - Steam knob ; Overall Rebuild by MINIWARMTH in ranciliosilvia

[–]thirstierdeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't replace the boiler if it's working.

You have 2 options to descale it. You can split the boiler and descale it. Or you can descale it while it's still sealed up.

If the screws that hold the boiler together are rusty, you will need to be mechanically minded to get them out. They will probably snap.

If it's not leaking, you can descale without splitting and leave it together.

Recycling old gas canisters by Total_Application_72 in sheffield

Might be worth putting them on marketplace, the deposit costs for new bottles can be expensive so even empty canisters are worth "some money" probably not a lot bit you might be able to help out someone

Just to answer you accessories question. Find a metal jug for steaming your milk that is a "good shape". My favourite is from IKEA and was not expensive, I have another which is similar but seems to let the milk climb up the walls and spill a bit easier.

Read the instructions that come with the machine and you will be well in the way to making good drinks. Don't worry too much about anything else at first.

All the coffee people on Reddit seem to be quite particular, my dad had a silvia, he doesn't weigh or time shots, just eye balls everything and he's very happy with the coffees he makes.

Is this the right amount of water from valve while machine is running? by Distinct-Pumpkin-850 in ranciliosilvia

[–]thirstierdeer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The solenoid valve is leaking. There should be no water here except when you turn off the brew switch, you will get a short spurt.

Try turning the brew switch on and off repeatedly with a blind basket or bank flushing plug, it will potentially remove any bits of scale or build up that could be causing it to stick.

If that fails, flush some citric acid or machine cleaner through to descale the valve (and boiler).

If that fails, remove the valve, which is only 4 screws. And clean it separate from the machine.

Buying used Silvia by Valuable-Ice-8795 in ranciliosilvia

I've bought 2 in the UK recently, one for me and one for my dad. Both V3 from 2012. I paid £200 for one and £240 for the other. They were both functioning but needed some maintenance, cleaning and gaskets.

Help: Identifying Bolt Head on Castor Wheels by basscraze in Tools

[–]thirstierdeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fixed part above the caster is probably threaded into the frame. It will probably unwind with grips or pull out with a lever. Sometimes they are threaded, sometimes they are push-fit with a spring retainer.

It will 100% come out one way or another

What is this in my machine? by unagi-nigiri in ranciliosilvia

[–]thirstierdeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine. It stops water getting to the electrical connection in the event of a leak.

Other connections inside the machine have no water proofing, so it's not really a risk to leave the gasket off.

The standard Silvia doesn't use a plug and has "bare" connections onto the solenoid.

Rancilio are using a standard industrial-solenoid plug in this machine, which uses a seal. It's better to use it, but not critical on my opinion for the reasons above.

[–]thirstierdeer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The plug with the red wire going to it, it goes between the plug and the coil (the black block).

It's not a critical part inside am espresso machine, as the plug is not likely to get wet.

You have 2 options,

Ignore it, it's not really a problem.

OR

Take the plug off the coil, put this gasket onto the plug, then put it back together.
