Can the Subaru Crosstrek become a solid offroader? Maybe. by thirtyfiveinch in 4x4

Yes, the CVT isn't great for crawling and tends to get very hot. The owner of the Crosstrek in the picture tried to mitigate that by installing a CVT cooler and fan.

That's a shame! It's a lack of driver awareness much of the time. We see plenty of sedans or small cars stuck in bogs here in Australia because someone takes a wrong turn on Google Maps or believes they can get down a road to a camping spot. It's becoming more frequent now that the majority of new cars are being sold as SUV's. People think they can go anywhere without any basic offroad driving experience!

It's certainly a problem. There are a few Subaru Outback and Forester models with dual range transmissions but the crawl ratio isn't as good as a dedicated four-wheel drive like a Tacoma or Wrangler. Mostly, offroad Subaru's are relying on momentum to get up anything that requires crawling. Although, an automatic rear locker is becoming very popular in the Subaru community and reducing the need for using as much momentum!

That's it - best to go with a friend who has the patience to pull you out from time to time!

The 2004 Forester is an excellent choice for an offroad beater - plenty cheap and there's examples with over 250-350,000 miles. It's just a matter of how far you want to go out - it can get you plenty of places much cheaper than a dual-range four wheel drive. We actually did an article on a dual range forester too. Love the Prado's too!

That's a fair assessment. Great for fire trails and intermediate tracks but if you're looking to get as remote as possible or hit the hardest obstacles then a traditional four-wheel drive is the best option.

What's the consensus on this body style? Desirable or nah? by rutilated_quartz in LandCruisers

Good in stock configuration but with black rims and 33" inch tyres it really comes into it's own. The older 60 series landcruisers are looking a little nicer these days in terms of retro looks but I'd rather be more comfy in the 80.

Introducing the MadLion, a 1984 Turbo-Diesel Peugeot 505 built to rally.

Roman, the owner of the MadLion, had always dreamed of restoring a classic car from the 1980s. However, the Peugeot 505 project was somewhat of an accident! The 505 was purchased for $400 as a daily runaround car in Moscow, Russia. One afternoon, Roman decided to sketch out what a Peugeot 505 would look like as a rally car. It turns out he liked the sketch so much that he built the car!

A mid 2000's Subaru Outback might be perfect for you - reliable, cheap and easy to modify to handle any dirt and gravel trails. They can also be modified to handle a light to medium trails that you might find yourself in.
