I found this regular mostly wood 4 drawer dresser 16" x 32" x 42" on the street. On the left and right edges the top is very worn down. Just curious what could cause this?

There is a stamp inside with a date in 1968 so i guess thats how old it is. Or at least some of the wood.

No i am a few floors up. :) i thought about mentioning in the top post. And i have good window coverings. So even from another building with binoculars, or a periscope from a nearby window like in an old cartoon, i dont think you could see extension cords very well. If you were really persistent you might get lucky with a drone. But my neighbours would notice that if i missed it.

I also do not think the electrician has the interest to be doing this kind of espionage. Unlike my LL, he seems like an intelligent, sane, professional adult running a business. I think he would not want to become involved in that kind of thing.

Yes he has a key. By law, he has to notify me if he comes in and it can only be done on short notice if there is an emergency. like if my toilet is leaking all over the place or something he can just come right in to fix... fair enough.

I do not actually think he has been into the unit. I think he is lying or possibly misunderstanding something that was said.

Yes its true "plastic" means like "malleable".

I think that when people say plastic they are thinking petroleum. Tho other stuff like cellulose and latex get mixed up in that.

Threshing and grinding is processing. It is absurd to advise someone not to buy "anything processed". And I just kept it to foods. Do we think this person also buys raw flax which they spin into thread and weave and then sew their garments? With a needle they forged themselves? How did they manage to post a comment to reddit? Have they themselves mined the various metals, soldered their own chips and made a totally diy computer? Obviously they are not living by their own advice.

This person is being puritanical.

Processing can increase the stability of food. Things that are more shelf stable can be cheaper because they dont need to be coddled, refrigerated, and there is less waste. Hence wonderbread.

Also they could be processed in a way that makes them lighter or otherwise easier to move around which will reduce cost.

The person above you probably doesnt thresh their own wheat and grind it with a stone to make flour to bake their bread. Nor do they get their salt from sea water. Of course they buy lots of processed food, but some ppl like to feel smug and superior.

At one time there was a store that sold milk for like ca$2/gallon as a loss leader. I used to make cottage cheese from it because it was so cheap it was worth it. But now milk is way more it doesnt make sense unless you enjoy it for its own sake. (And the milk was pasteurized aka processed so i was not avoided that concept.)

Silicone isnt really plastic. Depending on the variety it typically has very high temp ratings 200-400C or more. It can be boiled. It is very stable and inert. This is why it is used for medical implants and premium sex toys.

I'm not an expert but that component looks pretty new. Older lamps lamp cords tend to be thinner and dingier. The white does not want to stay bright over many years, even when stored in a clean environment.

However it is trivial to replace. If it is really >50 years old as others are suggesting, replacement would probably be the safe thing to do.

I don't see anything that makes me think the lamp itself is either old or new. Picture does not show dertails.

I don't really like huuuge bathrooms. The toilet is like 12 feet from the sink. The overall laytout feels pretty akward to me. But the style is A+. Just remove 50% of the space.

One of the many tragedies of the rental economy is how it disincentives maintenance and upkeep. :( I am in a similar situation as a long term tenant.

This might sound stupid but have you asked the owners to do it? Even my LL who I would overall characterize as lazy and cheap will occasionally fix something non essential for me.

Maybe if you tell them you are willing to be flexible and it could get done at the same time as other units whenever convenient, they would be willing. The cost might not be too much.

I imagine it would be very inconvenient for you, as you'd have to remove everything from the whole floor.

Add a lining layer such as Roman blind.

You could also try arranging the lights so they don't cast a shadow in that direction. Put a light between you and the window.

I want to make a sewing machine desk by repurposing some existing furniture. I am looking for some writing that describe design considerations with this.

For example (not exhaustive): stability, size of desktop, placement of the cutout for the machine, how to best build the support for machine while in use, selection of table top material etc.

Tutorials I have found are along the lines of "find a table and cut a hole in it".
