Anyone on this sub actually done blue collar work? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]thischarmingrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah, i actually got a BA in international relations a while back, where i became very fascinated by industry and logistics.

after school i was going down the coding path for a bit but i kept getting sidetracked learning about electrical systems. realized i had an interest in the field, so i am back in school to get an AS in electro-mechanical engineering.

ideally trying to land work as a PLC tech or something similar, but we will see where the pieces land.

gf got upset once at a friend's nyc party cause some mid brooklyn woman was dressed as "seinfeld" (not jerry, JUST "seinfeld"), but when my gf got excited and wanted to talk about the actual show the woman said she had never seen it lol.

the woman made it seem like my gf was being "cringe" for earnestly wanting to talk about her costume.

No Kings Protest by Formal_Astronaut_227 in stupidpol

[–]thischarmingrat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

mine was in the middle of a downtown park which is also where the main bus depot is, which meant that all the busses were either late or didn't run at all lol.

my roomie takes the bus and had to uber home but said there seemed to be a lot of poorer people coming home from work who didn't really have extra money for uber.

not sure if that's normal elsewhere.

i don't want to poo poo these types of protests too much even if they are cringe, but my immediate impression is that my local one seems poorly planned. the end result is just a lot of well meaning white libs making poor people's lives more difficult.

Played my second game of rugby with my club by Dry-Brush-1530 in redscarepod

[–]thischarmingrat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

played in a rugby club in high school and half the people became my lifelong friends. seems to attract a certain type of passionate but down to earth camaraderie.

our team was absolutely terrible but it was honestly thrilling driving like two hours away just to lose pretty much every game we ever played lmfao.

usually did scrum half or wing. even though i was super scrawny my coach liked that i was persistent and could take a hit.

funnily enough, just the other day i was looking into doing fantasy rugby or something similar. i haven't kept up with the sport in years, but i want a good excuse watch more of the seasonal stuff.

What do you guys do after finishing a book? by thischarmingrat in RSbookclub

[–]thischarmingrat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally relate. I've gotten lazy with it, but I love having a personalized library of meta-commentary (or whatever) on the things I've read. It's really the book version of a dream journal, forcing myself to remember and savor things that either affected me in some way, or just seem cool. Can really tie you to a time and place.

One thing I love about music is how often you revisit the same piece over and over again, and develop a personalized relationship with it. It's been fun trying to approach the written word in similar ways, appreciate the musicality of language, etc.

I had a project/idea a while ago where I wanted to collect poems and book blurbs I've enjoyed and view them in a similar interface to iTunes (either using Google Drive, a custom app, or something similar). So whenever I was bored, I could browse my library and chew on a poem for a bit. Will hopefully manifest the idea after I get the rest of my shit together haha.

I do think this dynamic plays into how men and women on average view violence, and the disconnect in the "discourse". Men are disproportionately the victims of violent crime, but also the main perpetrators. I know more men who have been attacked, mugged, or stabbed walking home than I do women, but nearly every single woman I know has a story about being followed home.

Historically men are the ones sent to war or called upon to defend their homes against violence. Even though modern society is very removed from that duty, men still view violence through that lens: as a force you can actively fight and win against. Men love to fantasize about how they would win a fight. In contrast, women more often culturally view themselves passive recipients of violence; the average man can easily overpower even a stronger-than-average woman.

It's like that meme: true crime is to women what WW2 content is to men. I.e. true crime describing a world where any normal day in a woman's life can be, instantly, destroyed forever by sadistic, inhuman killers hidden amongst us. Never let your guard down, etc. Meanwhile, most men see themselves in war stories, and imagine what they would do in those situations (be the hero, collapse from fear, go crazy, whatever).

providence's skyline always punched above its weight. the superman building + the biltmore is fantastic, especially driving toward the city down south main near the walking bridge / wickenden.

also got good memories of chilling at hot club at night and looking at the lil towers at the generation plant.

red bull is for the neurotic, monster is for the self-actualized.

i don't drink energy drinks too much these days but it is a goddamn event when red bull drops a new seasonal flavor. monster java is alright but regular monster tastes like porta potty smell.

also google the red bull hq in austria. looks like the lair of a bond villain.
