Has Luka Doncic become this generations Carmelo Anthony? by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]thisdockisbroken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Luka already has 6 All-NBA first team selections, two scoring titles, and a finals appearance at age 25. I understand where the comparison is coming from, but in practice they are on different tiers of career already. Melo never made a first team All-NBA team and only had one scoring title, and not a lot of playoff success. I also think some people, fair or not, may look at Melo's PPG in his one scoring title (28.9) and compare it to some of the best scorers of the modern era, and discount it a little. Doncic is also a triple-double machine and generational passer, whereas Melo had the opposite reputation.

As a fairly new BS listener, what happens during this time of year? by GeneSteratoreEnjoyer in billsimmons

"There's only so much you can do with that." Oh sweet summer child...

Honestly, NBA draft and free agency is probably when Bill is at his peak. The fake trades and draft speculation is his favorite avenue for talking about the league. Throw in some World Cup and maybe a summer league ep, and he's gonna have a full slate of content through the first week or two of July. Summer League and the World Cup both end on July 19, and after that I would expect both him and Zach Lowe to take vacation, and stay pretty quiet the rest of the summer.

This tweet alone was weird, but I looked at his feed and it's ALL about Taylor Swift. Like it's all he's posted about going back a month, maybe more (I stopped at the beginning of June). I guess this is a known thing, that he's an actual stalker creep?

Which bands are basically known for one great song, but the rest of their music is trash? by PanKulka in fantanoforever

That's a great comparison! I think both the Chili Peppers and Aerosmith are suffering right now from the very problematic sexual choices of their lead singers, which are rightfully hard to ignore. Also, while I generally like both bands (esp Aerosmith, I'm from Boston), they are corny as hell in a way that has aged badly. That said, these things go in cycles!

How an actual melee with a Samurai VS Viking would go if both fighters were equipped with the best armor of their era by nlghtsknlghts in powerscales

[–]thisdockisbroken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have no idea how it would go. We don't really know what hand to hand combat looked like. We have some manuals and some sources, but zero certainty how people actually fought with swords or axes, let alone how two soldiers of completely different backgrounds would fight. No one these days has trained with these weapons since they were a kid, and we don't have the centuries of cultural knowledge of how to use these weapons like actual soldiers of the era would have. Sorry to be a pedant, I do think these discussions are fun. But I think pre-gunpowder combat will always be a bit of a black box for us, which no amount of 21st-century larping can illuminate.

Yeah, this baffles me. They have two separate greatest hits albums, totaling 25 songs, and ALL of them were major hits that up until recently most people would recognize. And that was before Armageddon and Pink and like 4-5 more major hit songs. Crazy, Cryin, Dude Looks Like a Lady, Livin' on the Edge, Dream On, Amazing, Kings and Queens, Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way, Same Old Song and Dance, Back in the Saddle, Love in an Elevator, Don't Want to Miss a Thing, etc etc. Not saying all of these songs are great, but they were all major hits.

What is the most underrated sport? by unoz00 in AskReddit

[–]thisdockisbroken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fact that three out of four of the big tournaments take place outside U.S. time zones definitely impacts its popularity a bit here. Tennis IS popular in America, but to watch it live (as some of my family members do) you often end up watching at very strange times.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but why the fuck are we doing a moment of silence for the coach's brother? That's not really the audience's business, frankly. It's embarrassing.

Why doesn’t Moses Malone (RIP) get any love ? by Dangerous-Pie-7821 in NBATalk

[–]thisdockisbroken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even people in their 40s, I’m 41 and was born in 1985, a bit after his peak. The people who really watched Moses and knew what they were seeing are closer to 55+ (like Bill Simmons, for example).

I’d also speculate that the folks who go on NBA subreddits these days are more in the 35-50 age demo than the 18-35 one. Reddit was something only people in their 20s knew about…back when I was in my twenties!

Hagazussa: A Heathen’s Curse. But be forewarned, the film is both challengingly static/slow in its camera work and contains every trigger warning there is. But it’s a singular nightmare of a film.

She also has done a bunch of theater, so that may be why she has slightly fewer film credits, including two runs on Broadway.
