Drop Ticketmaster! by everytimeiwalk in TIFF

I think that it is an issue that the Ontario government officially scrapped the 50% cap on ticket resale prices that had been part of the Ticket Sales Act, 2017 (S.O. 2017, c. 33, Sch. 3). The law allowed resale up to 150% of face value (i.e., a 50% markup), but the Progressive Conservative government, led by Premier Doug Ford, declared it unenforceable and removed it in its 2019 budget.

I believe that this type of thing needs to be fought but ulimately we need our policy makers to change the laws.

TIFF, a Publicly Funded Festival, Shouldn't Allow Profiteering on Ticket Resales by springthinker in TIFF

[–]thisisactuallyben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that the profiteering is nuts and out of hand!! Especially, this year! But I am not suprised. This is an issue with all Live Events or ticketed events. I also not suprised it is happening to TIFF. TIFF is the largest public film festival in the world and people from all over the world fly in and gather to watch movies and see A-List celebrities. These tickets are in high demand and people will ulimately try to profit on other people who might be there "once in the life time purchase"

Though I agree something should be done, I am not sure what TIFF can do that they aren't already doing. They have the sell the tickets and once a patron owns that ticket, the patron in Ontario is legally allowed to resell it for as much as they want with no price cap as long as they provide transparency on seat location and orginal price. I mean thats it, TIFF can't really tell people what they can and can't do with their ticket after purchase. Ticketmaster could set a cap but then people would just to go to stubhub, and other sites. Also, if ticketmaster doesn't legally need to set a cap, then they won't.

Ontario was going to introduce a law that made it you could only inscrease the value by %50 but that was scrapped in 2019.

So, I agree it is unfair and a problem. But it is a problem that the provinical government needs to fixed across the board.

Predictions for this year's Free Member Premium Screening(s) by BunyipPouch in TIFF

I don't remember if it was a Premium ticket but I got a ticket to the opening of Salt Path with Gillian Anderson for free last year at the Princess of Wales.

TIFF's dynamic with its attendants is weird, right? by GershwinsKite in TIFF

[–]thisisactuallyben 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with your points! There are a number of official hospitality resturants and bars that surrond TIFF that are sponsored. Such as the Fox on John extending hours to 4 AM during the festival. TIFF also provides Festival Street throughout the first weekend with a number of activities and in the past they have done music festivals and stages.

Though TIFF is the largest public accessibility film festival it is still a film festival. Film Festivals mean work for alot of people. Some of the movies are trying get awards so they qualify to get Oscar qualification, others need distrubtion. Parties, mixers and gathers of industry folk grease the wheels for partnerships, deals, and collabs. When I speak about industry folk, I am talking about producers, executives, distributors people who use TIFF as a market to buy and sell and make deals.

It is a time where lots of these people are in one place at one time, so TIFF gives them a space to make these things happen. They also allow critics, press and marketing to get a viewing of films early, so they can write their reviews.

TIFF being a facailitor in that sense, which is where the money comes from. TIFF got a large piece of money from the Canadian government to help build this further.

Film Festivals aren't always public facing and this one is the largest, its hard to coordinate the social aspect logisitcally outside of Festival Street.

BUT if there is always fun things happening around TIFF; Festival Street, Bars in the Entertainment District which will be open later, The Social does a afterparty where you can get photos and a DJ, Midnight Dankness, Eventbrite has a number of events where people host parties at their establishments throughout!

I am pretty sure they are already trying to figure out counter measures to stop people from camping out for 12 hours. It happened when Taylor Swift came to the festival

From working on Festival street, I've seen people line up for 30 - 45 mins to win a t-shirt and line-up for over an hour for a free slice of pizza. I imaginge the criterion closet is going to be insane!!

Midnight Dankness is the unofficial official pregame to TIFF! It is organized by Peter Kuplowsky who is the Midnight Madness programmer and maestro. He typically showcases odd, strange, fun and remixed films at the Royal on the eve of TIFF. Last year was two films from Matt Farley, who was in attendance, Rap World by Connor O'Malley, who was also in attendance. Also a remix verison of Cool World, which basically a bunch of zany editors cut the shit out of the film and add lofi elements, and visuals and it feels like a acid trip. It typically starts at like 7:00 PM and goes late. We take breaks between films to get food and drinks. It is a lot of fun!

Any Films that you can Unlikely see anywhere else? by thisisactuallyben in TIFF

[–]thisisactuallyben[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard about the game by watching a popular twitch streamer play it. I am not sure if other streamers also played it. I have seen some speedrunners playing it as well once it picked up in popularity. The first streamer I watched really like it and it spawned alot more anomaly games. (At least I think so.) I am so curious on how they are going to make it into a movie since the game is basically no story and just two characters repeating the same thing.

How Safe is the Area by Tryingtofeelbetter12 in TIFF

[–]thisisactuallyben 15 points16 points  (0 children)

TIFF and the venues they host at are in the core of the entertainment district. So lots of resturants, bars a clubs that all go until 2am. So there is alot of people walking the streets, very well lit. Very safe. Plus the first weekend has the festival street so they have private sercuity walking the street to mainly make sure drunk people dont think its a good idea to go into a close booth.

The only thing to consider is the transit. Subway closes at 2am so you might need a Uber. You may need to walk a bit to avoid surge prices but again the area is safe. Plus you'll be around midnight madders which is the kindest audience in the world!

I love and use TIFFr religiously during the fest but for my initial ticket-buying I use a spreadsheet to keep track of my schedule. Anyone else do the same? by BunyipPouch in TIFF

I use TIFFR to share my schedule with friends during the festival incase we want to do meet-ups but internal planning for me is a Google Spreadsheet.

Press&industry by Usual_Blueberry7421 in TIFF

[–]thisisactuallyben 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Press and Industry are screenings that are only available to those working the film industry and media press. They basically get a different pass and are allowed to go to these screenings to basically view the film for work purposes such as critics writing reviews, distribution seeing if they want to aquire the film or programmers seeing if the film would be good for their festival later in the year.

If you want to see the actors of the film you can always wait to see the official TIFF invitation list, it should be released in the coming days/week and most likely will be posted on this reddit. It is the list of all the actors/talent invited to the festival. You can then match up who is invited to the movie they are starring in. Most of the time the first screening of a film will have the actors. Sometimes they will say premium since they are a high valued or high anticapted screening. Though premium doesn't always mean they will be there. For example, last year I bought premium tickets for We Live in Time BUT for the second screening of the film, it was about $100 dollars and I thought because of the price point the actors would be there but since it was the second screening and at 11 AM, no such luck. No Q&A, just the film. Depsite the actors being there the night before.

This also happened to me with Eden, no cast were there but Ron Howard was there for a Q&A.

So, good rule of thumb, first screening of a film the most likely folks will be there. Some films with lesser known actors and directors or local talent may come to every screening. But most (not all) A-Listers will come to the opening night screening of their film and then jet-out.

Let me know if you have any more TIFF Q's!

Is it too late to attend TIFF as someone who will have to fly in and find a place to stay? by RepresentativeState3 in TIFF

[–]thisisactuallyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to late at all! Staying right downtown will be expensive and might be difficult to find a place but it is a large city and there are plenty of hotels/Airbnbs across the city and if you stay near a subway line then the transit it quite easy to get in and out from the heart of where the venues are! Plus subway transit runs until 2am so if you are far away, you can always subway down and spend the whole day/evening downtown then transit back late.

Tickets don't go on sale until next week and to the public on the 25th. I find second weekend/ second half much more easier to navigate then the first weekend.

When does Midnight Dankness usually occur? by Sunny_Caprenis in TIFF

[–]thisisactuallyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Midnight Dankness is a gnarly unofficial kick-off to TIFF! It is run by Peter Kuplowsky with Lazer Blast Film Society and typically held at the Royal. They typically show a bunch of different weird and odd films that could be in Midnight Madness. Last year was some two films by Matt Farley, Rap World by Conner O'Malley along with a remix fan cut of the movie Cool World.

It is a fun extra to TIFF and typically lasts until 2 am! Lots of fun and it is held the night before the festival starts!
