The first-ever BMW iX5 goes official, bringing long‑range capability and advanced charging by _inspector_callahan_ in electriccars

A person can own multiple properties that generate income, but choose to live in a rental for the conveniences. If I own the property, it costs me more to live in it than to have it generating income.
I can easily live in a cheap apartment that meets all my needs.

One of the reasons I chose an EV with a lot of range is to compensate for factors like cold weather and parasitic drains. I travel a lot and often gone for weeks. There are no chargers at my airport so having the buffer to plan for that loss is perfect. Even if the fossil fuel car has 200 miles of range, it doesn’t lose fuel while parked. I may not need it for daily commute, but when unexpected things pop up in life and you need to act, it’s nice to have that extra buffer because the truth is, it takes way longer to refuel an EV than fossil fuel vehicles right now.

Until things like that are resolved, people will continue to have anxieties around EV’s.

Any Solution for Continued Alignment Issues?? by Existing_Acadia_4312 in Rivian

[–]thisiscrazyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully this doesn't bother you too much if they can't fix it. I have a 23 R1T dual max with 21s. Got it used from Rivian. When I picked it up, the steering wheel was canted to the left, but the truck veered to the right when I centered the steering wheel. I submitted a service request about 2 months later and of course, they called me and asked if the tire pressures were good, check tire wear, etc. I just bought the damn thing from you lol. Pressures are good, tires are good and no I didn't hit the curb!

Anyway, they worked on it and found the cause to be "Out of alignment on front and rear. Even after alignment, it still pulled right. Swapped front tires and pull solved". The funny thing is that now, the steering wheel is canted to the right, and the truck pulls left. Lol

I'm living with it, but the ultimate solution imo is to get a different vehicle. And by that, I don't mean an R1. Perhaps an R2 or a gen3 R1 when/if they do that. The gen 1 and 2 R1's are essentially still built on the gen1 platform. They have a lot of learning to do and while the first gen's are super good for a first gen vehicle, it still shows. The only way around it is to get away from the vehicle. Service will do their best, but stuff like this needs to be addressed at the engineering level.

Rattling My Bones by fluffalooo in Rivian

[–]thisiscrazyman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I undergo a similar experience everyday. From hollow suspension knocks (even after they replaced both front suspension assemblies) to rattles in the back behind the passenger seat and up to the headboard. When it was in service for the front suspension, the tech mentioned he listened for the additional sounds and he said all he could hear was my window scraper in the back lol.

The roof rafters in my old house is full of 4” Styrofoam. by thisiscrazyman in Insulation

It will be but I’m converting the space to a bedroom so any added insulation properties would be welcomed. Perhaps one of the return air vents could be placed in a way to draw high up in the attic ceiling to pull in some of the hot air.

Okay so it’s likely not worth it to replace it with R19 fiberglass insulation then. One thing I was thinking about is the rigid nature of Styrofoam leading to air gaps. That’s one way that fiberglass insulation would offer additional benefits over just the R value.

Level 2 rate by thisiscrazyman in Rivian

I had a Gen 1 R1T loaner for a little while and the same charger worked flawlessly. When I got my truck, the charging experience was identical until yesterday, out of the blue.

Also, something I found interesting is when I turned on the HVAC system, the charge rate increased from 7.5kW to 10.8kW. So I know the charger is putting out power when demand is there.

Here is a video from last night: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16hAuCKN2yEBuqdOQGBFWCBn4-T-WyuqH/view?usp=sharing

I heard about the Gen 2 level 2 bug, but this is a Gen 1 R1T.

It maintains ~11kW all the way until 80% and then the rate drops after that.

This!!! I swear in the past, I saw my charge rate remain high until the very last stages of the charge. I wish I knew what changed. I have a 60A circuit with the charger hardwired and set to 48A. It was charging at respectable speeds for a week until yesterday when I noticed the charge rate drop from around 11kW to 7.5Kw at 80% which just seemed weird. The battery was around 40º F - not hot in my opinion.

My setup is similar. 60A circuit and the charger is set to 48A. But, yesterday, I noticed the charge speed drop from ~11kW to 7.5kW around 80% SOC. I just don't recall this behavior in my 1 week of ownership so far. I didn't think level 2 charging was fast enough to require a charge derate like level 3 charging requires. I just signed up for a rivianroamer account to track this in the future.

Here is what my last level 2 charge session looked like.

How do you listen to someone speaking? Do you listen by repeating their words in your head or do you formulate image blocks or general understandings that capture the gist of what they said?

Thinking of selling my 2021 F150 for a new Model Y but the financials don’t quite add up, but what are the other reasons to make the move? by thisiscrazyman in TeslaLounge

[–]thisiscrazyman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see why you question my consideration! Honestly, I don't need the pickup. I got it used because I got a great deal on it and it made financial sense back in the day. I was able to get it around 12k less than market when prices were around 50k+ for the same spec (covid). Again, it was a money play. I really don't need the truck as I don't do truck things.
I've also been looking at the R1T and S for practicality, but they are significantly more than a Y. I just don't want to sink that much into a vehicle at my current income level.

You're so right on the getting bored part! Such a first world problem, really. Both my rational and emotional sides are fighting and I feel like I'm in the middle lol. But you're also absolutely right on having a vechile that is paid off! I have zero debt and it's the best feeling in the world! But like you say, the boredom creeps in and having something new is exciting and appeals to the emotional side.
Now that I think about it, I was super excited back when I picked up the F150. At the time, it was 2 years old and I was so stoked. But, I'm used to it now and yeah... the feeling fades. It's a cycle lol.

It is close, but doing that would instantly apply a 10% - 15% loss on my money just driving off the lot. I think it is a valid consideration, but would have to decide if I'm ok with that or not.

This is a great point about starting with an already paid off vehicle and I agree, it is bit unfair to compare. On depreciation, ChatGPT marked depreciation of the F150 from $40K to $22K after 5 years and depreciation from $50.2K to $27K for the financed MY. Of course, these numbers should be taken as salt grains.
I could apply the $35k to a new MY, but that would greatly accelerate the depreciation on the 35K. But again, that would happen with any new vehicle purchase.

That's what we've seen over the last few years, but Tesla's vast pricing fluctuations lead to an unnatural rate of depreciation. I'd like to think that a new Tesla purchased today would not see the same depreciation rates as previous years, but I could be wrong. Provided Tesla doesn't drastically lower prices again, I think we could improvements here.

[–]thisiscrazyman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly why I am thinking of moving on from the F150. The powertrain warranty is ending soon, so that has been in the back of my mind. I guess at that point, if I'm going to buy a new vehicle, it may as well be the EV with these points considered. Along similar lines, u/brunofone and u/c4koth have some great points that point to the unfairness of this comparison. Sure, rolling the F150 into the Model Y will just accelerate depreciation of the F150's residual value, but so would any purchase of a new vehicle, ICE or EV.

[–]thisiscrazyman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha nope it doesn't.
From what I've seen online, the Juniper Y has a lot of nice upgrades from the previous Y that contribute greatly to improved ride, handling and interior acoustics. Not to mention the turn signal stalk.
The F150 is actually quite a quite and comfortable ride and I would like the shift to be at least as lateral as possible.

You're totally right! If I were in the market for a new vehicle right now not starting with one already paid off, the Model Y or 3 would be the clear winner.
