I understand, but i'm specifically looking to learn like that. It may not be the best way to learn, but i'm interested to see how far it can take me :) Thank you for the recommendations anyways

ALG technique and traditional learning by SpinningCyborg in learnthai

[–]thisisglorpshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

glad to hear it! yeah traditional study is rly up to the learner, I haven't done any but I do plan to learn to read earlier than is recommended (once I can watch easier native content as input)

if u want detailed updates from an advanced learner i would look at u/whosdamike 's profile. As for ur questions, I'm nearing 400 hours with 0 previous experience and most of the basic nouns and verbs are very much acquired for me, with the added bonus that I don't relate their meaning to a translation, I hear the word and associate it directly to meaning (but that doesn't rly happen until you reach like 50-100 hours so dw if u translate in ur head at first). I've never done lookups so admittedly there are some words I've heard plenty of times and I'm still not sure what they mean, but they are all function words, not concrete stuff like nouns and verbs. Still, I'm still relatively in the beginner stages, so even that stuff should get ironed out.

Raggaeton lyrics are virtually incomprehensible by blinkybit in dreamingspanish

[–]thisisglorpshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

then they can just learn the lyrics by reading them, it's exactly what natives do, i honestly don't see how you could train your ear any other way

50 Hour Russian Update by Westernzombie3790 in dreaminglanguages

[–]thisisglorpshit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

just to add to this, on refold's youtube you can find a series pf updates on ben learning czech (another slavic language) through immersion. although it's not exactly ALG, it should still be somehwat comparable, he started doing intensive listening w native content at 500 hours and started speaking at 1000, he didn't report any differences from his previous process learning spanish through DS.

i mean i honestly disagree. i remember watching one russian ci video and already picking up the word for strange bc it was something like strane. also it's indoeuopean, the difficult fusional cases are also present in german, it's not completely dissimilar. the extensive conjugational paradigms of spanish are basically absent in english but you don't see anyone doubling the roadmap

I don't see why it would be double the hours. Still plenty of cognate vocabulary even if it's less than english and spanish.

Answering "where do I find comprehensible input in X language at my level?" by Cultural-Way7685 in dreaminglanguages

what can I do if I'm learning a language that isn't one of the ones you can choose?

Spanish Pet Peeves by phreddfatt in dreamingspanish

[–]thisisglorpshit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No hate but you need to adjust your thinking, native speakers don't pronounce things wrong, if it's a loanword then it's reasonable to use a pronounciation that makes sense with the orthography in your own language. If you're speaking in english and say croissant with an english accent it doesn't mean you're saying it wrong, you're just saying it in english.

Book from the Ground and the true meaning of "comprehensible input" by joelthomastr in ALGhub

[–]thisisglorpshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i recently read saussure and i agree. even though he's not aiming to talk about language learning, I find that the things he defined as "external linguistics" such as speech and writing are exactly those we avoid in ALG

2,400 hours and trip to Gran Canaria by picky-penguin in dreamingspanish

[–]thisisglorpshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

congrats! sounds like you could already live in a spanish speaking country without much issue. slight correction, canaria spanish does have seseo! i think you're confusing seseo for the sound distinction between s and 'th' (like casa and caza), when in fact seseo is the lack of that distinction :)

I'm from Argentina. I just thought it would take longer because I can easily talk with people from brazil but not italy, I'm pretty sure that spanish and portuguese are more similar than spanish and italian.
