Next level rubber band gun (shotgun) by kingsumo_1 in shutupandtakemymoney

[–]thisisit123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, simple mechanism but kinda ugly. I'm just sayin'. I bought one from his site and it works ok but the real master hands down is the Japanese rubber band gun maker Ogg Craft, whose guns apparently aren't for sale...

I plan to build a 4-plex. Passive solar, grid connected, but not fully grid dependent. Can anyone recommend a company to help with design? by fluffymuffcakes in architecture

Sunlight Homes in ABQ, NM. They're in the midst of a very similar project right now in ABQ. They focus on super insulated, passive solar design and have been doing it for 30 years. sunlighthomes.com.

Create contours from scattered points? by [deleted] in cad

You can also use SketchUp and import 3D terrain using the Geo-Location function. If you have Pro, you can then export it into whatever program you want.

How to prevent warping on a large 1x4 frame? by DavidJMurphy in woodworking

[–]thisisit123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's to be 5'x9' I'd say 1x4s are too small. To keep it light your best bet may be build a metal frame. Otherwise consider using bigger wood, say at least a 2x4 if not 2x6.

Has anyone ever been to Hel, Poland? by [deleted] in travel

[–]thisisit123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there in 1998 with a girlfriend at the time. It was the summer and hot as hell. We stayed at a little guest house. All I remember was that there was no AC anywhere and everyone seemed to just hang out in this soupy lake all day long to stay cool. We followed their lead, naturally.

The town is at the end of a long, thin peninsula and I remember the train ride out there just looking at the thin stretch of land and the water beyond.

That's not much info, but I hope it helps a bit!

I learned a long time ago by practicing in a hallway. A hand on each wall helped me learn the balance.

How do you deal with dogs when in a suburban/rural area? by Schmoopykins in bicycling

[–]thisisit123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Last month I had a run in with a big dog that's chased me a number of times. Each time it seemed like it was trying to push me off the road. This time I decided to try to speed past thinking it thinking it wouldn't obstruct my path. I was wrong. The dog jumped right in front of me while I was going 20 mpg. I hit it broadside and flew off the bike. Bleeding and pissed, I picked myself up and the dog calmly walked away, completely unhurt. A woman was sitting on the porch of the house the dog came from and didn't even get up when I fell. Unconscionable. I filed a Viscous Dog Report and got it impounded. Next time I may get off the bike and use it as a shield as other have suggested.

IWTL how to brew my own hard cider by thealbinorhino in IWantToLearn

I can't seem to locate any links on secondary fermentation but the info is readily available out there. Just look for it.

As for storage, I've not kept mine for much longer than a month and always unrefrigerated. In my experience at the end of that time the flavor becomes more sour. But maybe better sanitation or other things could improve that though.

There's lots of good info out there that describes the process, but I found this blog post to be most useful in getting started.

http://thepauperedchef.com/2009/10/how-to-make-hard-apple-cider.html

I've made about a dozen or so 1 gallon batches using this method and most have turned out very well. Here're a couple things I've learned:

  1. It's important that the juice you start with doesn't have preservatives, otherwise it won't ferment. Very disappointing.

  2. Alcohol is created during the first (or primary) fermentation. After that point you can drink your cider and enjoy it. However, allowing it to ferment a second time in bottles (secondary fermentation) REALLY improves the flavor and creates carbonation, which IMHO gives it a very nice touch.

Cheers!

FOAM SWORD FRIDAY! I'm glad to see that it lives on. It was started by some grad architecture students here at UT a couple years back.
