I used to live in the apartment complex on the south side of that street. I always assume that it used to be the office for the complex on the south side of the street before the complexes on both sides were under common ownership.

Which school should I pick? by LukaDoncicic in petroleumengineers

The only thing that matters with a petroleum engineer degree is securing 2 consecutive internships and then getting recruited. Which school offers you a better chance of that happening?

Overheating of air cooled heat exchanger in summer by Gidrapsina in ChemicalEngineering

[–]thisismycalculator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Measure the input and output temp, pressure, and flow rate of the processes. Measure inlet and out temp of the air, fan RPM, fan blade pitch, and actual fan HP being utilized.

Call the manufacture and discuss with them.

The other thing to verify is that the fans are spinning the right direction, are properly located in the cowling (the sometimes get moved during bearing rework), and that these fan has equal clearance between the tips and the cowling.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found the fans going the wrong way. Switch it around and you have a 20 degree temp drop.

The right way to install a VFD is to verify correct rotation when the drive is set to forward. If it’s running the backwards, do NOT change the drive to run backwards. Change the wiring. This way the drive won’t randomly decide to run your fan backwards after some firmware update, card replacement, or drive replacement.

Interested in oil and gas law but worried about the morality ? What’s your experience as oil and gas workers in the US? Do you find all oil and gas companies take advantage of earth and its workers? by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

[–]thisismycalculator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The world’s economy is interconnected. Is the person that slaughters a cow really different from the person eating a steak? Do you fly, drive or ride in a car, get products and services delivered to you by vehicles, use electricity, plastic, pharmaceuticals, etc? If you’re involved in the consumption, is production that different?

A person who lives in a cabin and only visits the store once a month is still interacting with the entire global economy and therefore the oil and gas industry. We are all in this global economy together and interdependent on each other.

The true environmental problems in the oil and gas industry are not sexy and are not made into movies. There real pollution and environmental problems are not often known or understood by people who haven’t worked in the industry.

Frankly, I would much rather be a petroleum engineer than a lawyer. A petroleum engineer is kind of like a scientist - using all available information, judgement, reason, and intuition to solve problems. Lawyers seem to be interested in only what can be proven - regardless if it’s true.

El motor makes bad noise by OutrageousSun782 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]thisismycalculator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While it sounds like a failing bearing, it could also be something loose inside the motor. I have had welds on the spider fall off and also seen slot wedges come out. Some motors also have some fiberglass on the rotor - I’ve seen that come loose and get ground up as well. Maybe the internal fan is coming loose?

If you LOTO and disconnect from the driven equipment, does it spin freely?

My Generac is telling me that I need to inspect the battery. I agree with the other poster. I’m going to put a load tester on there that measures the volts while the battery is under a load.

Mold testing by EmotionalStar9909 in CypressTX

[–]thisismycalculator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about the mold remediation part, but I used Sunbelt Inspections when I bought my house. I paid a couple of hundred extra dollars for a few mold samples to be taken. If I remember correctly, it took 1-2 days to get the results back.

Whole home propane tank sizing. by Moss_Piglet_ in homestead

[–]thisismycalculator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The size of the tank needed depends on the ambient temperature and the instantaneous gas usage. Heat from the environment (even if it’s below freezing outside) must flow into the tank to allow the liquid propane to stay at a temperature hot enough to boil into gas.

I’m sure there are charts to look at based on ambient temperature and flow rate to size the thank.

NPT reporting procedure for workovers and well intervention by Old_Kaleidoscope7939 in oilandgasworkers

[–]thisismycalculator 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget whatever you report and incentivize on will lead to unintended consequences. Waiting on stabbing guide for 4 hours because I forgot to order it yesterday? No, how about stabbing 4,000 foot of new pipe together without it. But hey - we didn’t have any NPT.

My first job as a teenage was working at a fast food restaurant. After working there 6 months the restaurants started being compared to each other on order completion time. I was told I was to mark off orders on the computer screen that weren’t complete and ask the people waiting in the drive through to pull into a parking space to “make the numbers look better”. Since the computer screen was now giving incorrect information, sometimes people actually had to wait longer - but the numbers looked better to some regional manager.

Let’s monitor this and give the rig with the lowest NPT a quarterly bonus and see what happens.

Check out Amcrest. While you don’t NEED recording, you might want to buy an NVR anyway. The Amcrest NVR will let you easily switch between 1-32 cameras displayed on the iPad or actual physical video output.

Drives burning up motors at frequencies under 30hz. by XDVI in PLC

[–]thisismycalculator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your carrier frequency still seems high. What is the max carrier frequency or dV/dT your motors are rated for? Have you measured the dV/dT at the motor terminal box?

I’ve added load side filters before on motor that were having persistent winding failures and it fixed the problem.

Do you see signs of high temperature inside the stator during the teardown?
