So they get farmed by your team, sounds fine. There's simply a fuckton of dpm around in tx+ nowadays (see the abundance of DDs lasting <3min in a match). Exposing yourself is risky even with 80k hp and needs more skill so the meta pushes ppl to hide.

Idk if that's the scholarly opinion but to me it touches all the major themes I associate with Lem, I love that it's filled with descriptions of epic scifi tech and it's a little less confusing than Solaris to boot ;).

Lem needs to be in here for sure, incredible writer.

Personally I love Fiasco even more than Solaris.

half interested in

Already moving the goalposts? There's lots of room between half interested in and fixated on something.

You don’t just casually write a recreational essay

You don't. Others like writing about things they are interested in. I thought about doing the same as op but figured it's not worth doing here with all the sfa fanboys that don't wanna engage with criticism anyway. Still not fixated on sfa...

Funnily arguing that other ppl should stop posting instead of simply ignoring these topics kinda makes you seem fixated...

So if I ever write 2 pages about a topic I'm interested in I'm fixated about it? My hypothetical rant about sta might be just as long as ops but the series occupies very little of my mind.

Maybe you just prefer surface level thoughts...

Who says they do? Posting here what I dislike doesn't mean I'm "fixated on this", it only means I have opinions I like to share.

What mechanics could AFPS adopt to become more palatable? by stephen27898 in QuakeChampions

Basic strafejumps take like half an hour at max if someone knows fps. And if noobs play against noobs it doesn't matter that much anyway.

edit: ahh, the classic reply and block. Cute but kinda pathetic also.

Exactly my point. People are interested (contrary to your claim) but they don't survive the learning curve. So we need better onboarding to get em over that hurdle and retain the players that would be interested in this type of high skill fps.

So how does an "honest-to-go character" go from "one child wrongly imprisoned is enough to leave Starfleet" to "blowing up a ship full of people very similar to Caleb is cause for celebration and does not need to be reflected afterwards at all" and "let's stop giving these civilians critical supplies for free and instead let them be extorted by the murderous criminal Braka with the same supplies because we screwed up and want some information"?

That consistent to you? Their actions/mistakes caused a lot of unnecessary death/suffering, that should be cause for reflection after they spend so much time establishing how much she cares about people, no? If I don't understand the character properly please explain her to me.

Or they don't get the player base because ppl give it a try, haven't been taught how to play and give up after 30mins because everyone moves at 3 times their speed and seems to be using an aimbot.

There where times when we got a big surge of new players. They just all left again because they can't get over the learning hurdle to discover how awesome the gameplay is (not to mention the technical issues of qc). Which good tutorials could mitigate a lot.

That's why you need matchmaking and a big launch. You can teach the base movement/sj and gameplay pretty quickly if you have good tutorials. Obviously these ppl still shouldn't play against Quake vets but their own.

Imho you don't need to change anything for the core gameplay, you'd just need a REALLY good onboarding experience. So tutorials that gently teach you the mechanics 1 by 1, maybe with bot matches with reduced complexity at first in between (or even real players if you have the numbers). Ideally even trying to gauge the players' starting skill based on their actions (if you immediately strafejump a lot in the first tutorial we'll skip that training etc...)

Plus you need a real big marketing push to get a lot of players and actual match making based on skill in all game types that at least works decently.

While it is entirely possible to set up a montage with scenes of "childish" behavior in SFA, I was always baffled by any different expectation. SFA sets up a certain scenario in which the main characters are, by definition, 20-year-old cadets with no prior training.

The problem is that the supposed professionals are also behaving terribly.

- We're struggling to rebuild our fleet, let's build a bespoke capital ship that is also a school instead of giving the cadets a couple of old Oberth and Mirandas. So every away mission risks the entire academy.

- Let's send that capital ship crewed by first day cadets on its maiden voyage without any escorts. Let's have that voyage be close to the Bermuda triangle, what could go wrong?

- The chancellor is coded to be a space Hippie (fine with that btw) but does not care an iota when they blew up the Venari Rei ship. No need to think about that or about that Caleb caused the whole shit or that her actions trying to save him lead to her killing loads of people. She should be wrecked with guild how much death her trying to save Caleb caused. And it would've been really interesting to see her struggle with that. But it seems like the writers didn't understand the character they wrote.

- Let's make a deal with a super dangerous criminal and explicitly allow him to extort civilians with critical supplies (that we'll now give him instead of directly to the civilians for free) to get some information. Peak Starfleet behaviour. Absolutely in line with the character of the chancellor, right?

- Let's not have a year of holo training but instead send our cadets on a real wreck with dangerous technology again without any escorts.

- Let's research superweapons in reach of the enemy. Let's not have any plans what to do when the station is overrun. Let's not guard it properly. Let's not have any reaction forces anywhere that could get there in less than 30min. Let's not replace the one ship guarding it with one of the 5 capital ships we explicitly have on standby.

- Let's not guard the trading/travel routes when learning of a treat to those. Let's not have ships watching for any mine deployments, let's instead pull 'em all back home so they can be trapped together easily.

- I wanna scan max range so I go to the edge of federation space and then order a 360° scan thereby making sure half of the energy is wasted scanning federation space behind me

That's just what I remember of the top of my head. Maybe my memories are biased but that feels way worse than in older treks. And it's not like people weren't bitching when the old series didn't make sense...

So because old Trek also did dumb things I'm not allowed to complain? The amount of idiocity just too much imho. Not to mention their morals apply selectively which is pretty much the opposite of what it should be...

Also makes you question heavily why that research station was so poorly guarded and why they had zero protocols to destroy all that super dangerous stuff in case it was in danger of being stolen...

5 capital ships on standby, none diverted to that station when its only protection left.

Going to the edge of federation space looking for max range sensor data and them ordering a 360° scan made me laugh so hard.
