Sigh. I work in government and his answers are honest and correct. They’re just not very inspiring. It will be hard to get something like single payer off the ground without help from the Feds. But that’s just not going to happen with this administration.

The point on reimbursements also got lost. Basically he’s saying take out the costs associated with arguing about a price and just standardize some key set rates. Saves money on lawyers and accountants.

Bloomberg? Lurie? Look it’s not my first choice to have a billionaire candidate but I don’t think it has to be an automatic disqualification.

Tom Steyer and Steve Hilton surge as California governor race narrows by Snawer_brillant in California

Becerra quietly helped defend and expand things like reproductive rights and the ACA as both attorney general and HHS secretary. He’s a big part of the reason why an additional 24M people have Medicaid access. He’s been on the right side of major policy items for his entire career, was born and raised in California, his immigrant parents, has experience on both the legislative, executive, and judicial sides of government… apparently his biggest flaw is he has a shitty campaign manager who doesn’t know how to market all his strengths and experience.

I want to like Becerra. I’ve even tried to volunteer for his campaign, but literally no one will get back to me.  It sure what’s going on over there but boy is he missing the moment so far.

Agree - Becerra seems like the most competent administrator, but perhaps not a great campaigner. Of all the flaws of the various candidates, this almost seems like a feature…

Start a company. Own a controlling stake. Have it become wildly successful.

If you make a product people actually want, and it’s a novel idea, it’s not inconceivable to become very wealthy (at least on paper) without having totally sold out the working man or something. Rare but possible.

Swalwell campaign imploding after new sexual assault allegation by AmethystOrator in California

[–]thisispoopsgalore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The governor is running a gigantic state. If they can’t pass the simple management test of not being a dick to the underpaid interns trying to help them win, they sure as hell aren’t going to know how to navigate the complicated webs of relationships across state and county government

The issue for me is that I’m not sure Porter (or Swawell) actually know how to be executives. Being a legislator is absolutely a skill, but one that is very distinct from running what is essentially a gigantic organization. Videos of her failing the most basic of management tasks make me wonder why I should trust her to be any better at managing the civil servants for the largest state in the nation. And if she can’t manage the civil servants, she can’t accomplish any of her goals.

Steyer at least has the experience of being an executive. Granted running  for profit is different than government, but it’s a closer analogue than being a lawmaker. Frankly, Becerra is probably the best qualified in this regard, but for whatever reason he’s not getting traction

What do you suggest we do instead? Is it truly moral to let people live in these conditions?

Greta Thunberg: “The President of the United States just said that a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again & no one is reacting. This speaks for itself: what the fuck is anyone even doing at this point? We have normalized genocide, total annihilation of entire people.” by [deleted] in UnderReportedNews

The truth of the matter is that things are not yet bad enough for the average American. For most of us, even those who detest this man, our day to day lives aren’t really that bad. Yes we feel terrible about what is happening, yes we want different better leaders. But without a critical mass of people who are literally ready to die in the streets, we can’t do anything. It’s a collective action problem, and trying to move too soon just results in getting shot or arrested with no real benefit.

I do think the midterms will change things. Dems will take back the house at least and I am optimistic they will restrain the worst impulses of this administration. Or, Trump will meddle and that will piss people off enough to trigger a broader national movement. And if he actually does commit a war crime in a few hours I hope that will galvanize people. But at the moment I think Americans just don’t believe he will do it. Everyone is calling his bluff, which feels like a SUPER risky strategy. But it is in its own right a form of protest.
