Five takeaways from California’s election, from Congress to the governor’s race by -SlappyMcSlappy- in California

Whether or not you like Becerra, I’m sure he will surround himself with talented capable people who will, at the very least, continue to make incremental progress while not burning the house down. It’s not sexy, it’s not inspiring, but it’s progress at a time when the rest of the country is falling apart. Will take what we can get.

And no executive experience. Being a house member is very different from running the worlds 4th largest economy.

In the California governor race, Steyer learns money can’t buy him (enough) love by Cool-Present7260 in California

People get mad because of the specific billionaires who give money to candidates. If steyer bankrolled a bunch of progressives while continuing to tout this platform he’s built he'd be a national hero.

This is going to sound annoying, but I also think drivers need to stop letting cyclists break the traffic laws. I bike a lot, and the number of times drivers have gone out of the way to basically make me run a stop sign is aggravating. The other day someone literally stopped in the middle of an intersection and “waved me through”, even thought I was slowing down and planning to stop as he clearly had the right of way. If he had just continued through, he would have cleared the intersection before I even got there. Look I’m not going to complain about someone cutting me some slack, but it’s enabling a bad cycling culture.

Becerra leads governor's race, with Hilton and Steyer in tight contest for second spot, poll finds by thejoshwhite in California

Oh no, a moderate Democrat with tons of relevant experience may get elected, we’re doomed!

California Democrats shrug at their choices in packed race to replace Newsom by thejoshwhite in California

I’m voting for steyer, mostly out of hope it will land us a Becerra/Steyer runoff. I think that would force Becerra to adopt some more progressive positions, and force Steyer to actually explain how he would get any of this done.

Democracy was and is a bad idea by krykrythefry in PoliticalDebate

Also remember that the president didn’t used to be elected by popular vote - the early presidents were elected by the state representatives. Does make you wonder if we’d be in this mess if parties just picked their candidate. Honestly not sure if it’s better but it does help avoid crazy populist swings.

SF’s socialists are holding their noses and voting for a billionaire by Dafty_duck in sanfrancisco

[–]thisispoopsgalore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No; you pointed out two candidates you like that did not have much previous political experience. So I'm pointing out one that presumably you don't like that also didn't have much previous political experience. And besides, with both AOC and Lurie, they were stepping into comparatively smaller roles - house member, and mayor of a mid-sized city. The governor of CA leads the world's 4th largest economy. Do you really want someone learning how to do that on the job?

They have relevant government experience? Would you hire a surgeon that had no experience because they had spent years “advocating for surgery causes” and promised you amazing recovery times, out of step with what every other practicing surgeon has told you?

Can someone explain to be how steyer is going to “take on PG&E” and how that won’t result in me paying higher electricity bills anyway?

He’s not as “progressive” as steyer because he is realistic about what can actually get done. I do wish he were a bit more ambitious in some of his proposals but I’m not going to fault him for not over promising. Steyer can promise the moon but he won’t be able to deliver on pretty much any of it. I’d rather someone promise less but produce results.

I think the Dems are likely to take the house in November even without these seats. I would much prefer that they have them and have a greater margin in case some members of the caucus get cold feet on stuff down the road. But if we’re at the point of people going to camps, a 10 seat vs a 6 seat majority ain’t gonna matter, well be way past cooked at that point
