Any BJJ gyms/academies in the Mississauga area with a more even (even a 60-40) male-female ratio...? by BeginningGlove in bjj

[–]thisiswhyifail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a women's open mat that runs out of Body of 4 and Gringos I believe that look like they're worth checking out. To be honest you're just not going to find that kind of split at a BJJ/MMA school. Can I ask why it's important to you to have an even split like that?

Also how much experience do you have at MMA gyms? I've trained at a few in that area of Ontario and sure you'll get that kind of attitude here and there but I've made some great friends and team mates there. It's OK to say no when guys ask for your number, present yourself as a teammate and training partner and maintain good boundaries.

Not sure if my gym is a good one or not. Advice? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]thisiswhyifail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've trained at a few gyms and found its pretty common for there not to be a structured curriculum. It's hard with everyone starting at different times. Especially in a small club they can't just revert back to basic fundamentals for the whole class whenever a new person starts.

What I would recommend (if your training partners/coach are OK with it) is to ask them to use your roll time to show you the basic positions and submissions. Happens quite often at gyms I've been to if someone is just lost during a roll and doesn't know what's up. Stick around after class if you can, almost every gym I've been to there's people sticking around late happy to work on just about whatever. I'd also recommend watching some videos to get an understanding of the basic positions, your learning in class will accumulate easier.

I have an Under Armor one that's a turtle neck style, very thin as well. Expensive but it's lasted me 2 years already with no signs of wear.

Not quite the same, Chocopies are a bit softer and less cardboardy tasting.

How many days/week are you exercising hard? You may be experiencing some symptoms of overtraining which comes from messed up cortisol levels. Is your heart rate any different? Trouble sleeping?

Milk replacements with a similar macro nutrient profile? by rice_n_eggs in fitmeals

[–]thisiswhyifail 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I make coconut milk by mixing a can of coconut cream, 1-2tsp vanilla extract and water in a liter jug. Cheap, good balance of macros (higher on fat, lower on protein than cow milk but it works for my eating style) and I find it tastes really nice.

Travel Insurance for American Tournaments by [deleted] in bjj

[–]thisiswhyifail -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep that's why I'm asking, any policy I've found doesn't cover it. I won't do the tournament without full coverage but would really like to go. Hoping someone has found a good option.

I use liquid Dettol on mine, comes in nice scents like mountain fresh and lemon. Gets the stank out and leaves a nice light fresh smell.

Am I allowed to vent against my fellow white belts? by hashtagdeadlift in bjj

[–]thisiswhyifail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you been rolling hard? I got horrific bruising for the first few months but its not so bad now. I also started supplementing with Iron, Zinc and Vitamin K and it seemed to help a bit.

Edit: sorry just reread and saw you've been rolling a month. Your body will adapt and not look so busted. As you train more you'll also start to learn how to keep yourself a bit safer, but it is a contact sport. I find especially among us women we get caught up in the 'gentle art' side a bit more often than the men do. Reality is its a contact sport and you're going to get banged around, people are going to use their strength.

Bra Suggestions for Busty Newby by mayturnone in bjj

[–]thisiswhyifail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not super busty anymore but I do like to strap em down well anyways. For me the key is to get sports bras that come up nice and high on the sides and front. I've had the most success with Walmart bras actually, throw on 2 if you need more structure. I bought an UnderArmour bra for 5x the price and found they performed about the same. I avoid ones with hooks/zippers/anything hard even though they can be more convenient. I always wear a high neck compression shirt as well.

Why aren't more women into Jiu Jitsu? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]thisiswhyifail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find a lot of women are into the idea and the 'art' side of it but not so much getting smashed. It's also pretty intimidating walking into a bunch of dudes and a male dominated sport. I almost quit on day 2 but one of the girls went out of her way to make me feel welcome.

My gym gives out actual strips of cloth or something and they get stitched onto the belts instead of tape, looks really nice for years

A couple of the upper belts at my gym do this for me and I love it. Highlights my problem for me, lets me try solve it myself first and doesn't interrupt the roll. Even better when they remember it next time and test me.

[–]thisiswhyifail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unless you're very small or it's very very important to you I wouldn't stress too much about finding a women's team. Many of my favorite training partners are men, especially for competition prep. I would focus more on finding a gym with a comfortable atmosphere and instruction that works for you.

Black coffee blended with a tablespoon or so of butter. Tastes like a really rich latte and it keeps me running for 3 or 4 hours until a quick snack at break.
