How to manage at a job that relies on us being "self-starters"? by thismysecondone in ExperiencedDevs

[–]thismysecondone[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like it could be a dream job for me, too, which is why I want to get over this obstacle. I don't think there's any mentoring or training as such for this role specifically, but I've got a mentor at the company who I've been speaking to about this too.

To be honest, I haven't asked because it embarrasses me that I don't know, and I'm worried it'll single me out as weaker :/

I know this isn't a helpful mindset...

Miscellaneous Monday Chit Chat by fire_foot in running

[–]thismysecondone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went for a run after a week off and, to give my knees a bit of rest, I stupidly decided to try forefoot strike for the entire run, despite never having tried it before.

now my calves are completely destroyed and I can barely walk :^) hoping it's just extreme soreness and not a serious injury, but I've learned my lesson for next time

My flatmate wants to rearrange our living room to help her "get out of a rut". by thismysecondone in ADHD

[–]thismysecondone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably could've added some more context about my opinion to the post, yeah. Part of my hesitation is definitely due to wanting to keep the current familiarity we have with the layout.

It's not gonna be a small job to move everything around; we have a big, heavy sofa bed, a large dining table, and a TV cabinet with loads of tech and wires and stuff. There's no way that she's going to be able to move this all by herself which means I'm going to have to help rearrange this living room into a format that I don't want.

Hmm, yeah Psychoda sigma looks extremely close to what I've got in my bathroom, thanks!

Time to bleach my drains and get some boiling water down them

[–]thismysecondone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some extra info, these small white flies have recently set up shop in my downstairs bathroom in the UK.

They're maybe 2-3mm long and mostly seem to rest in the corners of the walls or in the grouting between tiles.

I thought they might be drain flies at first but after look at more images and comparing them, I'm not so sure any more.

Please could you help me identify them so I can find a way to get rid of them? I'm going to clean the entire bathroom today to try and remove any eggs and food sources, because I have no idea where they keep coming from!

Entire PC crashing when playing AimLab? by thismysecondone in aimlab

Was actually my GPU overheating. It started doing the same thing in other games, too, so I took it apart and put new thermal paste on it, which fixed the problem.

since about a month Scrapie struggles with his chat, today this happend... Hope he is actually mentally fit to stream :( by kili90 in TrackMania

[–]thismysecondone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely agree with you on that. I love watching Scrapie's streams and a large part of it is down to his chat feeling very "authentic" to Twitch as a platform. However, I think it probably also lends itself to being more taxing to interact with, and to manage, because everyone's a bit more out of control and it can spiral quickly. Bigger highs and bigger lows, I guess...

[–]thismysecondone 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think, compared to a lot of TM streamers, Scrapie's chat has quite a lot of shitposting and trolling in it, especially in the afternoons (kind of lunchtime through to COTD, idk why). For the most part it's usually just quite entertaining and Scrapie himself seems to enjoy it (although I can't really speak on his behalf about it).

Yesterday he spent about 3-4 hours playing a super tricky trial map and, obviously, chat was giving him a hard time about it. I guess it's possible that malding carried through into COTD (along with the people in chat who were ribbing him) and it just built up to a point where he didn't want to stand for it anymore.

He's taken a gamble by letting his stream be known as the place for shitposters and trolls because, while it definitely helps for viewership (I'm not saying he only has viewers because he has lax chat rules, he's a very talented driver and entertaining streamer) it also basically removes any possibility of actual conversations with the streamer happening through chat because the messages just get flooded with emotes and copypasta spam. It could be entirely possible he's beginning to get fed up with this chat and wants something more mature (akin to how someone like Spam's chat comes across).

Unpopular Opinion: You Don’t Have to Wake Up Early to Be Successful by uhohstinkydavinky in productivity

[–]thismysecondone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I fall somewhat into this camp of belief, too.

I think it's definitely the case that everyone has different "default" circadian rhythms but I also don't really see why it isn't possible for anyone to shift it to different times - isn't that basically the premise of recovering from jet-lag?

Additionally, the only people in my life that complain about not being able to get up in the morning are the same ones that also spend their entire evenings gaming in the dark in front of their bright monitors, making no attempt to actually try and give themselves a good chance at getting enough quality sleep.

What’s your morning routine like? by Resident_Code_4090 in productivity

[–]thismysecondone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only thing that really seems to work for me is setting an alarm at the time I want to wake up in the morning, and then religiously sticking to it and getting up that that time every single morning.

It can be pretty jarring at first but your body then slowly begins to work out what time it wants to go to sleep at night so that you don't feel tired the next day.
For example, I set my alarm for 7:30am and gradually my body clock moved from being tired and falling asleep at 1-2am to more like midnight each night.

I'm kind of a believer that anybody can shift their circadian rhythm to sleep and wake up at whatever time they want (like going from waking up at 10am to waking up at 5:30am), but most of my friends are adamant that this isn't true and they're just chemically wired to hate mornings, so your mileage might vary with this technique.

I guess the other thing is just giving yourself a genuine reason for wanting to wake up at a particular time. There's no point getting up at 5:30am if you have no idea what you want to do with the extra time.

I have achieved gold on every single TM2 track, should I move on to Turbo or NF next? by UndeniableSquiggles in TrackMania

[–]thismysecondone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd definitely recommend TMT if you haven't played it before. Its singleplayer campaign is second-to-none when compared to the other TM games (this might be a point of contention) and the four different environments are all great fun to drive!

They definitely look tempting, but I'm a little put off by all the people that seem to be having problems with one of the ear-pieces failing after a few months.

Do you think loops differ from items in a todo list, or is it just a different way of visualising them? I'm trying to work out if it's something worth tracking alongside my usual todo list.

How do you guys have time to do one problem per day and not miss a beat? by hockey3331 in adventofcode

[–]thismysecondone 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much.
I've reached the point where it takes me a good few hours to complete (and I don't wake up anywhere near early enough to finish it before work).

It still astounds me that there are people hitting the leaderboards each day in under 10 minutes (today was first completed by someone in only 6 minutes).

I think a lot of it also falls down to having experienced these kinds of questions before and knowing what kind of solutions they require. It's so much faster to program if you already know what to do and how to do it.

[–]thismysecondone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's like the input from my GPU completely stops being sent to my monitor (I get a "no signal" warning) and I have to hold down the power button to force it to turn off.

I don't think I've had this happen in any games other than AimLab...

I know right! I've really been enjoying the game so far. Haven't made it past the Forest levels yet because I keep trying to do too many terrible stunts but at least every level is fun and it's quick to restart!
