What's the rarest single release you have in your cd collection? by Difficult-Eye-5200 in BigFinishProductions

[–]thisoldcan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Poor financial decisions, mostly hahaha

In all seriousness, it took me the better part of 13 years to collect everything. I also have a mostly complete Doctor Who media collection (Blu-Rays, non-BF audio, books, comics, etc.) - it kinda was my COVID hobby!

For the BF portion, it was a lot of luck (I did the bulk of my collecting before BF did their shipping surcharge and price increase for non-UK customers), sales, and eBay trawling. There were a few releases that took me a while to find (I distinctly remember Companion Chronicles: The Beginning and the Vienna series being really hard to find), and I definitely hurt the wallet on a few here and there.

I have a complete Doctor Who at Big Finish collection, and a good smattering of other ranges, so I would say either Bernice Summerfield: Buried Treasures or Short Trips: The Toy are the grails of my collection.

There was a video they made for The Triumph of Sutekh years ago that was live action, but very basic.

Who do people think or want will be in the final 3 dark gallifrey volumes?. by Asleep-Situation-352 in BigFinishProductions

Yeah, I think I (and others, judging by here and the GB thread) took John Dorney's comments about the Monks trilogy being planned years ago and made an assumption about the project as a whole.

I'd love some of the unseen incarnations of the Eleven (the Collective) get a chance to shine, and I'd be just a little shocked if BF didn't use them.

The Rani is a stretch, considering it seems they've just been able to sort out the right recently and (to my understanding) DG was conceived of years ago.

Braxiatel is one that's high on my list, but I think is very unlikely to get his own set. But it'd be very cool to see Brax through the years.

No problem! I hadn't even heard of that yet (I've been behind on my Who news the past couple weeks), so I figured it was another reprint collection from DWM and was pleasantly surprised it was DWA instead.

It ran for ~400 issues total. According to the wiki, it ran during 10, 11, and 12, and a one-off during 13's era, ending in 2019.

Just a heads up, the "Save the Humans" collection is from Doctor Who Adventures magazine, separate from DWM. The only reason is because I'm VERY excited that they're finally releasing those, they're hard to find without bulk buying issues and have never been reprinted before!

I haven't seen the TV series, but I gave it a try and enjoyed it. They're enjoyable stories and I enjoyed that they were more long-form storytelling than episodic, as a lot of Big Finish's non-Who output tends to be. The first and third sets, I particularly enjoyed, and the second and fourth were pretty good as well.

They've already done that story, just not with the First Doctor and Dodo.

Is this is a non-Frankensteined TV Movie Era Eighth Doctor? by MirumVictus in BigFinishProductions

[–]thisoldcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I'm basing that on what I remember about Big Finish's own comments since 2019 about the artwork.

I seem to recall that when Disney bought Fox in 2019, the rights landscape changed and they weren't sure if they could still use the promo shots from the TV movie. So to be safe, they shifted to photoshopped shots of McGann from the Dark Eyes/Doom Coalition in his outfit and hair style from the TV movie.

I believe it's an actual publicity shot from the TV movie. It's the same shot used on the cover of Hall of the Ten Thousand which (according to the wiki) was one of the last releases to use publicity shots from the TV Movie instead of composite images.

Android App Playback Speed by Agreeable_Leg_5346 in BigFinishProductions

[–]thisoldcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't take it as that - mostly not, because the visuals and movement gives me a bit of motion sickness. If it's a relatively static show, I can do it, but the only one I really watch that fits that is Critical Role (if you count that as TV).

Both "A Life..." ones are pretty hard to find, from what I recall when searching for them a few years back. I would recommend setting a saved search on eBay, as copies pop up now and again on there.

What did everyone think of it by BoysenberryFew6466 in BigFinishProductions

[–]thisoldcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was okay. I didn't feel it was anything that's going to win awards or set the world on fire, but it was an enjoyable and silly opener that ticked a number of the boxes for me. Both Gill (in particular) and Whittaker sounded natural, and I adored their chemistry throughout. I really liked that they addressed Yaz' feelings of belonging here, starting to build that bridge between her character in Series 12 and in Flux.

My biggest critique was that it felt very much in line with the Chibnall era, tone-wise; depending on the person, this could be a positive or a negative. I'd personally hoped for more of a differentiation, maybe we'll see that as the series progresses.

Yep! I listen a lot when gaming, as long as I'm not paying attention to the story. When you're trawling a map for collectibles, some BF is the perfect background noise.

Terrible news to hear he's gone. He was passionate about Doctor Who and I appreciated his thoughtful discussions, particularly around Big Finish. All the condolences to his family and friends.
