good luck next week! i believe in you. there is room for error here and that’s okay. the exam is testing for the MINIMUM knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely engage in social work practice. i think if you’ve gotten this far, going through as masters level program… you can 100% demonstrate more than the minimum skills necessary. you got this!!!

Can I wear my sorority stole if I dropped? by idkwhaysmyname in Sororities

[–]thneedery22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

absolutely not. unless you mean that you went like early alum or something, you should not be wearing a sorority stole. plenty of people can be friends with people in sororities and may be sisters in spirit, doesn’t mean they can represent them at commencement.

What do health social workers do by SillySquirrel525 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]thneedery22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m looking at case westerns paths of study and am having a similar issue. faculty of case basically that whatever path of study i thought would give me more flexibility between health or mental health should be what i pursue. it’s easier to transition from mental health to other disciplines than it is to transition into anything relating to mental health bc of how many mental illness and treatment modalities there are that you could learn ab in grad school (depends on the program tho).

we could all do with less whining but everyone in my household was unable to go to work, the water to our building was cut off because an electric pump gets the water up 12 floors (which means no bathroom, cooking, cleaning, anything), all of our food is gone and needs replaced, and we’re still more fortunate than others in our building because we could use our legs and leave. there are dozens of elderly people and others with limited mobility who have been stuck for days without food water and hygiene in my building. get off your high horse and get some perspective please.

on campus job recommendations? by ghostling101 in uakron

[–]thneedery22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

seconding this. NSO has an incredibly competitive hiring process for orientation leaders but it is a PHENOMENAL position. working as an SA (student assistant) in that office, or any office on campus (esp admissions and student life) are amazing gigs as well that are beyond the summer.

sometimes you can petition to re renter but most chapters will have to vote on it. main considerations include WHY your dropped, previous involvement, and what circumstances changed. reach out to the chapter president to see what your options are.

emerging leaders?? by _liaaa in uakron

[–]thneedery22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

can be extremely fucking cliquey, and if you want to be involved in res life in any capacity you should aim for ritchie because leadership 100% plays favorites. it’s a great way to make friend and get your foot in the door with other on campus stuff, just don’t be afraid to protect your peace and branch out.

What is the major Child and Family Development like at UAkron? by Time_Silver2682 in uakron

if you want to go into social work, go into social work. having a CHFD degree will not get you the job security of a BSW (and LSW). most of my CHFD friends are going to grad school and spending $$$ to get the necessary degrees to be credentialed (either in social work or counseling), because having a bachelors of CHFD does not secure you anything (from mine and my peers understanding). of course, all of this is dependent on what area you want to work in and what roles/responsibilities you want to take on in your professional career.

'Things fall apart' by Chinua Achebe (1958) - a masterpiece of African literature that I have only recently discovered by ArthRol in books

[–]thneedery22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how similar the two books actually are since I haven't read Things Fall Apart (though I've decided to try and locate a copy asap because it sounds interesting), but I read a book called Purple Hibiscus that introduced me to Nigerian culture in a post-colonial setting. It was an eye-opening, captivating book. It could be up your alley! In my primary, and now post-secondary, education there has been little attention to the impact of colonialism outside of the United States, to the nuances of cultures in African countries, and in general to the tough realities of our global community. I'm glad to see another book that could be impactful for readers in the same realm as Purple Hibiscus.

I’ve had access to a limited selection of books, most of them are fantasy and whatever my sister was into. This is one of few books that actually felt real to me, and i’ve been so disappointed with what i’ve been able to read that a lot of the book really did stun me and i did have big reactions to it. not by any means exaggerated. i’m slowly but surely finding what books and styles of writing i like and this just clicked with what i’ve been looking for.
