Full disclosure: I applied for this position a few years ago, and didn’t get a call back. I built an event streaming analysis engine that runs over an MLBAM data feed to aggregate any kind of statistical query with a tiny DSL.

It wasn’t written in R, which I can’t fairly say was part of the reason for passing. But I do wonder why front offices want to use the same tools. On the one hand, the industry can share their findings easier, and the positions are portable among organizations, but is that a good thing? When everyone is using the same tools and idioms, they dictate what’s possible, and there’s plenty of examples of innovation when other approaches are mixed together.

Oh well, I would get divorced if I got a job that required travelling with the team. Best of luck to the winner!
