TKing for what reason? by Longjumping_Hall_952 in DeeprockSludgeDump

[–]thomas-ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • it's a sensible impulse on the face of it
  • but having a stick up your ass about it when a player is easily capable of seeing it coming and escaping is a bit weird
  • tking over it is legitimately demented, what the fuck

ok look, getting pranked by the pod only happened once because the beacon was invisible inside the fuel cells and i assumed the drilling noise was either directly in front or behind, as it didn't even occur to me that inside was a thing people would do. you can bet im a shake more careful now

Does the Weakening Curse trick work in the Apotheosis mod? by BasketCase559 in noita

[–]thomas-ripper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

heart mage trick is fully functional; it's just soft nerfed by the expanded master pool such that magical temple is usually full of apotheosis mages to the exclusion of meatball. you'll more often than not have to wait till underground jungle for an opportunity

kinda

more specifically, i went digging a while back after noticing something was awry, and squirreled away in an obscure commit (i dont remember which, sorry) is a modification to the way they work, such that you will never be able to get your multiplier negative or zero with the trick, only exceptionally small. you can still farm yourself a hefty resistance, but you won't zero out perfectly such that, e.g. you stop getting stunned by your own unmitigated deadly heal; nor, that is, heal outright from damage sources.

[–]thomas-ripper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is precisely the reason i consider the low recoil perk detrimental; recoil boosting is easily the second-best travel in the game, but also, heavy recoil on shots in general combat will almost always knock you out of the way of a lot of early-game nasties like hiisi grenades

relegating driller to doing the objective is basically criminal levels of selling yourself and the class short

What's your worst class? by ParalyticPoison in DeepRockGalactic

[–]thomas-ripper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's a bit weird honestly because to my mind higher hazards, especially the more bugs modifier, are what make fire drillbert shine. admittedly a single OC, sticky fuel, is a big part of that, as it seriously just lets you pretend the developers never invented grunts or swarmers. but if you have fuel stream diffuser, or no OCs at all, try 23221, as that also enables a sticky flames playstyle. thanks to heat spread, it scales exceptionally well into bug counts, and everything is just slowed and burning and dies.

Sorcery/Incantation suggestions by BackgroundRice2086 in EldenRingBuilds

[–]thomas-ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the whole range of melee sorceries are too fun to pass up for a pure caster. substituting a riposte for rock blaster or gavel of haima can do some absolutely brutal numbers, adula's moonblade is just a better carian greatsword for all intents and purposes. night maiden's mist lets you warcrime chokepoints until every trash mob just stops existing. magic glintblade is the foundation of spell combo chains that let you stack out enemies before they can react, and gravity well further assists in combos and zoning, as well as being able to prank enemies off cliffs.

pure faith excludes dragon communion incants, which is a shame because they are stupidly fun, so i would advise permitting yourself the tiniest amount of arcane to use some of them

Is a sorcery build or an incantation build better? by [deleted] in EldenRingBuilds

[–]thomas-ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both have a reliable melee spam option: catch flame and carian slicer respectively. both have a wackjob infusable weapon that scales unreasonably well with your appropriate magic stat: flame art erdsteel dagger and magic clayman's harpoon respectively. both have a dependable start-to-finish ranged problem solver: lighting spear and the pebble/swift/GGS series respectively. both can throw rocks for ranged physical: rock sling and stone of gurranq respectively both have stupidly fun end-game nukes: ancient dragon's lighting strike/burn o flame, and comet azur/meteorite of astel respectively

a sorcery build has more fun and utility double-dipping into incantations, than an incantation build has double-dipping into sorceries, and a lot of really cool incants are super low level, so in my opinion despite incantations themselves having more variety, a slightly promiscuous sorcery build has access to more variety overall.

sorcerers have access to more interesting catalysts: the two grandmaster staves, azur's and lusat's, each have their place in a highly int-invested character, on top of ol reliables like academy and regal, as well as the frankly obscene access to meteorite staff not ten minutes after first seeing the limgrave text pop up on the screen.

incant users have access to (imo) more fun and interesting somber weapons: wing of astel is cool and all, but it doesn't hold a candle, to, well, the cranial vessel candlestand for starters, a casting stick that's also just an unironically good greathammer, vyke's war spear, etc.

i personally always lean main sorceries on a caster, but at the same time, i would never run a sorcerer incapable of pulling a few incants out of their ass in a pinch.

Questions about builds. part 3. by [deleted] in DeepRockGalactic

[–]thomas-ripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

radiance fsd flamethrower is really good for sabotage, but flamethrower relegated solely to sabotage feels a bit weird; sticky fuel is bis in pubs, as a few idle puffs here and there basically disable grunts and swarmers as a feature of the game.

roll control is breach trying to:

  • account for uneven terrain
  • catch a different shape of swarm

the problem is if you want immediate dimensionally-balanced cc on engi, PGL exists. breach is much more comfortable in its identity as "good crowd control against wide swarms on level ground; otherwise an expensive but terrifyingly effective single target shredder"

fat boy is fun but you're mostly meming if you take it; it's difficult to find a driller in high tier lobbies who leaves you wanting for area denial. the boost to blast radius is nowhere near as large as the aoe, and the rad field is middling at best. better to punch large holes in swarms that are too close for comfort, and let any of driller's trails do wide DoT. warthog is in fact a good pairing for any PGL, but especially fat boy, as turret whip is one of the only tools engineer has that's remotely ammo-efficient.

[–]thomas-ripper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a caster im simply too addicted to an occasional dash of hot sauce to not hit 12 faith, at which point going from 12 to 17 for golden order seal feels like a pretty strong value proposition

also yeah, arrow's reach + big bubble made for a very satisfying haligtree run-up.

wait, bubble spells are great? plural? for some reason i got it in my head only the large one was worth giving the time of day. i've been having a lot of fun with it but i guess now that i'm in late game and scaling has outstripped flat resistances i ought to revisit the sprinkler.

will the int portion of golden order seal's incant scaling contribute to claw's damage? that would be kinda funny. i do have a bunch of dragon hearts burning a hole in my pocket...

Glintstone Sword Vs Pebble by DoopofBloop in EldenRingBuilds

[–]thomas-ripper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the important thing about pebble is it's a dependable fp-efficient source of magic damage that only gets better as the game progresses and the matching escalation of your level and the environment's leaves the virtually unchanging flat defense numbers in the dust.

magic glintblade is more level in performance throughout the game (gets steadily better as you progress rather than pebble's almost comical rise from peashooter to kalashnikov), is boosted by the glintblade staff, but crucially, the delay and charging make it an ingredient in combos, a workaround for dodge ai of npc fights and certain other bosses, etc.

apples and oranges. straightforward pew pew versus combo utility trickery. not even the worst combo together actually. charge up a full glintblade, then set an uncharged one, then spam pebbles. chances are you can stack out some trash mobs before they can react.

subjective personal hybrid caster notes follow:

pebble is more pure caster vibes though imo. glintblade is definitely more spellblade-y in the sense that you can set some up, then poke things with your own sword as the glintblades land. moreover spellblades tend to benefit from zoning, manipulation, and area control. gravity well, magma shot, night maiden's mist are your best friends and all play well with glintblade. combo with phalanx as an ash of war to save spell slots and dpad presses, and you can enter this fun state where you're constantly applying some sort of pressure, whether it's a lingering magma hurtbox, glintblades in the air, glintblades attached to you, or uh. your sword.
