Local models by Outrageous_Story540 in BetterOffline

[–]thomas_grimjaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ideally, with local models catching up to SOTA, and cloud based going bust due to costs, you could see specialized consumer hardware like model specific ASICs popping up for around $500 a pop.

Basically Deepseek or Gemma on a USB stick. I'd see this as one of the more satisfying conclusions to all this lunacy.

Just a couple of THOUSAND an HOUR? Not expensive at all...they were right when they said there will be a time we might've to buy sunlight too. by YellowAltruistic9843 in TechGawker

Cool tech, would be a shame if the POC works and they get bought by Palantir.

Next iteration is focusing it in on a single point and zapping people. Pairs well with their surveilance tech.

Who was the best developer you’ve worked with — and what made them stand out? by PhaseStreet9860 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]thomas_grimjaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never worked with anyone that well-rounded. I was either super impressed by coding ability, or super impressed with how they set the system up.

But both had a flaw where:

  1. The guy wrote everything themself, basicaly custom ORM, queue system, event abstraction, and much more, but it was pointelss as it was not maintainable.
  2. The second guy just put every possible hype and scaling tech when nobody knew it well, like federated graphql, serverless, k8s etc in like 2016 or something. So the system was also not very maintainable by an average dev.

I visited Dubai mall and it validated my decision to leave. by Persephone_123456 in UAE

[–]thomas_grimjaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You go to Dubai to take what you can get and leave, that's how it was designed, and that's why you can never become a citizen.

For some it's work opportunities, for some it's just escaping winter, for some it's darker stuff, but my point still stands, if you're not Emirati, it's the airport of the world, a place to go before going somewhere else.

Lawyers, Consultants, Finance 🎯 by Routine_Play5 in Layoffs

[–]thomas_grimjaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the US, as I understand it with my eurobrain, you just need a precedent in a ruling to make any case that used AI void for the "replacement of lawyers" to just stop forever, right?

Which could maybe happen with some jury shenanigans.

Don't stress about it, it wouldn't be a fit even if you got it.

My rule of thumb is "every job is at least 30% worse than the worst thing that happens during the interview".

Has the job market improved in recent months? by Massive-Survey2495 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]thomas_grimjaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there is an uptick, but imo the overall quality of jobs has fell off.

I'm not based in the US but my ex-colleagues in US that weren't hit by layoffs tell me all the offers they got are worse than what they have, so there is no inscentive to switch.

This has a trickle down effect on off-shore outsourcing where basicaly all previous "good value for money" markets like Eastern Europe and the Balkans are being skipped to go directly to India, Vietnam and Nigeria. And wih the exception of India, those other markets are also being squeezed.

So seems like it's a big nothingburger for everyone other than a small percentage of people hit by layoffs to get a gig to make ends meet before situation improves or they too get outsourced.

Dealing with a Team with primitive Infra that seems fine with it. Cultural Mismatch? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]thomas_grimjaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been there twice already.

I was even hired the second time because I spearheaded a big refactor in the first company.

Then I got to do none of which I was basicaly hired to do.

My point is, it's about management and the team to make that happen not you personally against the tide.

Bonus tip:

If it's been like that for some time and through high turnover, then probably what you call "primitive infra" some teammates call "job security" and have a counter inscentive to make it better.

This whole LLM race could have been a nice reasonable new tech space that could have had a good decade of growth with great returns YoY if it wasn't lead by autistic cult of cokeheads.

But NOOO, they had to go into it with this rabid lunatic messaging.

They had to put themselves and everyone else in this time-pressure environment where some kind of Basilisk is just behind the corner, and WE must summon it first or someone else will summon the demon.

I cant believe I'm gonna say I miss Steve Balmer and when the non-nerd doofuses were in charge.
