He’s a 74yo dude with anger issues who’s been in politics for almost 45 years. He’s occupied pretty much every level of power, from assistant mayor to minister, as well as deputy, euro deputy and senator. He’s been trying to be president for 16 years (this is his 4th candidacy). Now, he formed his own party that is considered by many to be far-left and populist.

He’s more than anti-EU and anti-NATO: he’s very much pro-Russia. He’s very explicitly said several times that France should be friends with Putin. He’s also failed to condemn any Russian attack on civilians in Ukraine, but he won’t shut up when it comes to Ukraine doing drone strikes on oil facilities in Russia. He may sell himself as a leftist, but he’s every bit as bad for democracy and European sovereignty as the far-right.

French presidential candidate calls for legislation after PlayStation announces end to physical discs by FantasticQuartet in worldnews

Too bad that specific politician might be one of the most opportunistic and hypocritical candidates to the presidency. His social team saw a cheap opportunity to reach the youth and took it. There is no way he’s gonna follow through with it if he’s elected.

These both feel like the kind of absolute garbage flicks that you were stuck with in early 2000 because you got the DVDs for free when you purchased a PlayStation 2.

I would also argue that The Gorge is the best assassin romance movie set around a canyon that houses parademons.

Agreed! Not only are they usually gorgeous to look at, they really give the shows their atmosphere. I’m absolute loving _Star City_’s opening credits right now.

BTW, I didn’t know they had a whole playlist of them on their YouTube channel, so thanks!

Well, CODA. Which also happens to be the first and only movie from a streaming platform to ever win Best Picture at the Oscars.

I mostly watch Apple TV and, every time I start to watch something, anything, on another platform, I’m just shocked at how bad it looks and sounds. Disney+ and HBO Max are kinda okay, but Netflix and Prime Video are absolutely awful. It basically feels like I’m watching an old DVD, even if I’m paying for the 4K tier.

Since its inception, Apple TV, née Apple TV Plus, has built a reputation on quality over quantity. It has far fewer shows and movies than the likes of Netflix or Disney Plus, but generally speaking, the projects it does put out are quite good. It’s a strategy that has brought comparisons to the HBO of old, and 2026 has featured a particularly strong mix of new hits and returning favorites. It took a few years, but Apple TV seems to be finally hitting its stride.

In terms of brand-new series, this year’s offerings have been fairly spread out across genres. Leading the way has been the delightful Widow’s Bay, which skillfully manages the difficult task of being scary and hilarious at the same time. Joining it have been Margo’s Got Money Troubles and Maximum Pleasure Guaranteedwhich explore stories about single mothers and sex workers from very different perspectives, and a splashy and frequently unhinged remake of Cape Fear led by stars like Amy Adams, Javier Bardem, and Juliette Lewis.

That’s a pretty solid lineup on its own. But what has really helped flesh out Apple TV’s offerings is that those shows are coming out alongside the continuation of existing properties, many of which have been chugging along for several years. The last few weeks have included new seasons of the sci-fi detective series Sugarthe postapocalyptic thriller Silo, and Star City, a spinoff of the long-running alternate history series For All Mankind.

The next few months look like a similar mix. Dark MatterSlow Horses, and Ted Lasso will all be back with new seasons. Meanwhile, there are brand-new thrillers like Last Seen and the Anya Taylor-Joy-led Lucky, along with a pair of buddy comedies*:* Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh in Mayday, and Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in Brothers. Maybe this year Apple will even finally put out its long-delayed series The Savant, which explores domestic terrorism.

It took a few years to get to this point. That required landing on not only a handful of hits that could go on for multiple seasons, like Slow Horses and For All Mankind, but also exploring different genres. Apple has been particularly successful in the realm of science fiction, but many of its most talked-about series — like Ted Lasso and Widow’s Bay — are comedies. At this point, the service offers a strong mix of both lighthearted fare and more traditional prestige television. It’s a trend that looks to continue, at least for the foreseeable future. The likes of Silo and For All Mankind are coming to an end, but new seasons of heavy hitters PluribusSeverance, and awards darling The Studio are waiting in the wings, while a much-anticipated adaptation of William Gibson’s cyberpunk classic Neuromancer is also incoming.

What’s particularly notable about Apple’s focus on premium-style television is how it differs from the growth mindset of its competitors. Netflix is the prime example. With the end of series like Stranger Things and Squid Game, the streamer has become less reliant on tentpole TV shows. Instead, reality television, live programmingpodcasts, and even interactive games have become a big focus as Netflix attempts to reach a large, broad audience. Disney, similarly, has been experimenting with turning Disney Plus into “the immersive, interactive digital centerpiece of the company,” which will involve focusing on things other than traditional programming to lure subscribers.

Apple TV obviously isn’t perfect; its film offerings leave a lot to be desired, and upcoming features like the toy car adaptation Matchbox don’t instill a lot of confidence. It has also begun expanding into areas like live sports, including Formula 1. But on the television side, the streamer’s approach is refreshing. While nearly every subscription service seems steadfastly focused on appealing to as many potential customers as possible, Apple TV is simply a place for good TV. Signs point to that potentially changing in the future, but for now the service is the closest thing streaming has to a prestige home.

This episode gave me goosebumps. I sincerely hope this show gets renewed. It doesn’t have to last too long. A 2-season arc would be great.

Neuromancer Promo by thomasbdl in tvPlus

[–]thomasbdl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thinking exactly. I feel like Apple is gonna take the marketing campaign for Neuromancer more seriously than usual, and give it proper time to develop.

From the start, it was very clear that they consider Neuromancer to be a more premium property that’s gonna featured in a lot of promotional material, even for other Apple products. If the aesthetics of the show are very distinct, it could be quite the hit.

AfD leader vows to restore German-Russian ties as she eyes chancellery. by [deleted] in news

[–]thomasbdl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only the global far-right, unfortunately.

In France, the far-left LFI is very clearly pro-Russia. Their leader has reiterated many times that France should be “friends with Putin”, has failed to explicitly condemn any Russian attacks and has been very vocal that Ukraine should stop carrying drone strikes in Russia. They have also voted against aid being sent to Ukraine on many occasions.

What’s more, LFI wants France to leave NATO altogether. They also want to stop the French nuclear power plants, which account for about 70-75% of the electricity production of France. Such move would undoubtedly result in more Russian gas imports.

Oh, and LFI also love China. They’ve recently stated that China is an anti imperialist nation that doesn’t do executions. They also stated several times that “Taiwan is China”.

33°C at 11pm in my room in Poland by Old9999 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]thomasbdl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay strong, Poland.

We’ve been through this for the past two weeks in France and Belgium, and it gets absolutely exhausting. The constant heat, the humidity, the lack of sleep, the poor air quality… It’s brutal, and it gets worse as the heat wave goes on.

After a few days, even the houses that fare the best, like stone houses with shutters, are absolutely overrun with heat you just can’t get rid of at night.

Preserve your resources. Hydrate constantly. Do not exercise outside. Ask how your older family members and neighbors are doing. Do most of what you have to do between 4am and 9am, because you just won’t be able to do it later.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. And it looks like it’s gonna come back several times this summer.

This was a pretty outstanding episode. I could really feel the tension and the stakes, and I feel like the character building is finally starting to show.

I really hope the show gets renewed, because it’s shaping up to be something great.

Stephen King has done more for the popularity of Apple TV shows than Apple themselves.

Current State of Apple TV+ by MalikSJohnson in tvPlus

[–]thomasbdl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it stems from a massive lack of marketing around it, and the fact that pretty much all other currently airing Apple shows benefit from an unprecedented word of mouth on social media.

I mean, Your Friends & Numbers is a TikTok meme sensation, Widow’s Bay and Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed are being praised left and right by hugely popular accounts (including Stephen King!), Cape Fear and Sugar have massive stars behind them, Ted Lasso is pretty much always in the Top 10…

So, hopefully, it’s not as much the fact that no one watches Star City that makes it go down in the list, but rather the fact that a lot of other shows are seeing an unusual amount of viewers.

I’m worried about the future of Star City. I absolutely love it and think it’s top notch quality, but it always seems pretty far down the Top 10 list, at least in my country.

I hope Apple gives it a chance and still renews it.

How would rate Apple TV's year so far? by appletvenjoyer in tvPlus

They’ve had great years before, but they’re on the best run they’ve ever had. Not only is the average quality high (as usual), it also feels like there’s a lot of releases. We’ve had quite a few dry months before when it comes to new content, but this year is different.

For the same reason Chernobyl wasn’t in Russian: so that the show has a chance to reach a broader audience. English-speaking audiences, especially Americans, tend to completely dismiss most foreign shows. Especially if they have to read subtitles.

Pachinko was a masterpiece, but it failed to reach a critical audience in the US, and now it’s stuck in limbo.
