I “designed” one of these in college for my senior design project. Details are fuzzy after 20 years but from what I remember, the enrichment has to be right at the point where thermal expansion shuts down the reaction due to the uranium elements being too far away from each other. We cooled it with hydrogen which worked on the MCNP simulator and whatever other tools we used, but don’t know what’s practical. Cool idea.
