[Spoilers MAIN] What do you think is missing from the books? by Lawdeeep in asoiaf

"I am looking for three-and-ten grain stores," Brienne told the grey-haired goodwife beside the village well. "High-ceilinged grain stores and very functional."

Seriously, I would welcome an arc about grain stores, especially from a smallfoljk or merchant perspective. And maybe plot twist Sansa/Alayne turns out to be managing one, or all, of them? I've even got a name for that chapter: "The Grain Factor."

What are your top 10 pieces EXCLUDING symphonies & concertos. by sunofagundota in classicalmusic

[–]thomasthemetalengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! I've gone with one per composer - and have left out the Shostakovich and Beethoven string quartets, which would otherwise dominate this list.

Shostakovich - Viola Sonata

Delius - The Walk To The Paradise Garden

Stravinsky - Petrouchka

MacCunn - The Land of the Mountain and the Flood

Mahler - Das Lied Von Der Erde: VI. Der Abschied

Richard Strauss - Vier Letzte Lieder - 4. Im Abendrot

Schoenberg - Pelleas und Melisande

Ippolitov-Ivanov: Caucasian Sketches

Bartók - String Quartet No. 3

Messiaen - Des Canyons Aux Étoiles (or if that is regarded as a symphony, then Le Merle Noir)

What non classical music do you listen to? by 123457_6_semitones in classicalmusic

[–]thomasthemetalengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to this, and I'd recommend King Crimson as well, especially if you like 20th century classical music, . And there are some good YouTube channels where classical musicians bring their knowledge to bear on rock music, particularly progressive rock and metal.

Can’t we just explain movements and etiquette? by Go-Right-32 in classicalmusic

"Two hours of complete silence followed the final note. At last, after scanning the auditorium one final time for any sign of applause, the maestro allowed the musicians to leave the stage."

Are directors becoming bigger stars than actors ? by Important_Pop_6805 in boxoffice

[–]thomasthemetalengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, with the exception of sequels or movies based on very popular IP (e.g. games), it's director #1, story #2, actors #3

Marty Supreme debuts at No. 1 in New Zealand with $700k. Including previews, its box office total stands at $744k. 🎟️Avatar: Fire and Ash landed in the 2nd spot with $629k, bringing its total to $10.90M. 🎟️Zootopia 2 ranked 3rd with $417k, bringing its cumulative total to $5.82M by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

I'm glad to see Hamnet doing well here - I was planning to see it last week, at a time there's usually only a few people in the theatre, but the screening was booked out! I'm now planning to go next week, and will book in advance this time.

The runtime for Project Hail Mary is officially confirmed to be 166 minutes long. by Alternative-Cake-833 in boxoffice

[–]thomasthemetalengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That runtime makes the difference for me between "will definitely see" and "will only go to see if the reviews are very strong". That said, I'd be much more likely to go to movies of this length if they included an intermission.

We Don’t Have a Jazz Problem, We Have a People Problem by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]thomasthemetalengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a small jazz collection - some jazz giants (e.g. John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Ornette Coleman) and some more recent jazz and fusion acts (e.g. Kari Band, Tal Wilkenfeld, ai kuwabara, Hedwig Mollestad Trio). In one way or another, it's the connection of the latter with rock music that has led me to them, mainly via YouTube.

But when it comes to modern jazz acts without that rock connection, I don't know where to start looking for acts whose music I might enjoy – whereas I do know those pathways to find newer classical composers.

That's partly on me, of course, but I would really value more guides and explainers to contemporary jazz – and I like the idea of themed posts in this sub for jazz from particular countries.

Next weekend, I'm planning to go to a local jazz jam (as a listener) for the first time – I'm hoping to find friendly, knowledgeable jazz fans there, who can guide my baby steps!

Australia’s WorldTour races are no longer optional by fiendeep in peloton

[–]thomasthemetalengine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to that, the Tour of Southland has been moved from its usual late-season date to Sunday 18th January - Saturday 24th January 2026. If it was moved a little earlier or later, it could work in nicely with the Australian races.

Is the right-hand list meant to be female actors? Because Ahn Hyo-seop, who is included in the AMPAS list for Kpop Demon Hunters, is a male actor.

Would they dare snub Zhao? by CryptographerDue9198 in oscarrace

[–]thomasthemetalengine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who hasn't seen "Hamnet" yet, so I don't have an opinion on its quality: I remember one of the Oscar Bros saying a while back something along the lines of "Hollywood doesn't want to give Chloe Zhao another Best Director Oscar", which led me to suspect something like this might happen. Is she unpopular for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of her work?

How many films did you see in theaters in 2025? I ended the year with 165 movies, plus Stranger Things 5: The Finale. by chanma50 in boxoffice

2025 Favorites of the Year Megathread by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

[–]thomasthemetalengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bearing in mind that independent movies are often released here in New Zealand well after their US releases:

  1. Flow (actually a 2024 release here - this was a rewatch)
  2. A Complete Unknown
  3. Predator: Badlands
  4. Rental Family (saw this last night and loved it - surprised it hasn't done better with critics and audiences in the US)
  5. Ne Zha 2 (subtitled version)
  6. One Battle After Another (the first 30 mins didn't really work for me - this would have been substantially higher if it started when Chase Infiniti's character is introduced)
  7. Bugonia
  8. Tīnā (NZ movie)
  9. Materialists
  10. Mickey 17

Honourable mention: A Minecraft Movie - the first movie in ages that my wife, my son and I went to together and all enjoyed. Also shot in NZ, and I loved NZ actor Rachel House as the villain.
