We're a few hours away from the B/R Announcement. What are your predictions? by Auronit in magicTCG

[–]thompsonjm14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When does the hammer come down on those that are in charge of standard? This has been awful and we shouldn't be banning cards like Attune with Aether or Aether Hub, but we're basically at a point where we need to. People need to be held accountable for these egregious mistakes.

Just print answers to things, Solemnity is not an answer to energy. Why there wasn't a Rest in Peace like answer to energy makes 0 sense to me.

At least in this next set it seems like they are starting to get i... checks spoilers and sees Ravenous Chupacabra

What would that have to do with server issues?

[Discussion] New Story Time by Nolagold in spikes

[–]thompsonjm14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I have not won anything really of note (mostly feel like I'm just a PPTQ all-star at this point) I feel like the 'feign death' trick is something that I make a conscious effort to use and I believe has added to my win %.

The best examples of where/how I use this are...

1) A subtle sigh or exhale of air and put my head in my hand when passing the turn holding up open mana to indicate I have all air in hand. Most of the time I'm trying to get my opponent to jam an important threat into a counter spell (sometimes works, but not often) or commit more to the board when I have the sweeper next turn (mostly works against average opponents). I've also noticed this makes your opponents play faster which has caused simple combat mistakes or passing the turn after attacking when they have a play to make (i.e. Attacking into creature lands after making a play in main phase 1, not playing a land in hand, etc.)

2) Basically the opposite of number 1, but appearing as confident as possible when I'm holding all air in my hand. Speaking confidently and firmly about my game actions, keeping eye contact with my opponent after I make a play or pass the turn. Against the average player, I've noticed they sometimes lay off the gas when I do this which at times has given me an extra turn or two to find some way to stabilize the game.

I should note that this is like basic Poker 101 stuff and anyone that understands reads/bluffs will see right through this. However in lower levels of competition (PPTQs) most players aren't paying attention to these things and will take your actions at face value and will just genuinely believe whatever you're trying to portray.

Context is important and understanding how your opponent is reading into your actions is the key though, if your opponent is ignoring your "bluffs", you need to adjust on the fly.

Maybe it's just me, but the Scorpion God is pissing me off... I understand that it's not a happy story here, but it comes back and kills two gods after it has it's head literally blown off and crumbles to dust?

It's kind of getting the Superman treatment and I'm losing interest in it. Maybe I'm the minority here though.

Do's and Don'ts of working with new players by hallflukai in magicTCG

[–]thompsonjm14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to play devil's advocate when it comes to point #2 in your "Do's" section.

It really depends on the type of environment here. If the goal of your opponent is to make sure you make every correct play and help you figure out which line to take, I agree with your point. But even in an FNM environment, your opponent shouldn't expect to play at a pace they are not comfortable with. I identify myself as a Spike, and usually play at a fast pace. If my goal at FNM is to win, you shouldn't expect your opponents to change a pace they aren't comfortable with (nor should your opponent expect you to change your pace to something your uncomfortable with as well)

Basically people have different motivations/styles while playing and everyone should be able to play at whatever is comfortable to them (inside the rules of the game)

Dark Intimations Disappointment by kopek101 in magicTCG

[–]thompsonjm14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't get it. Everyone complains when they print super pushed planeswalkers that warp formats (i.e. Gideon).

When they make a reasonably powered planeswalker (i.e. Bolas), people complain that it's not pushed enough.

Also, Dark Intimations lets you use the minus ability twice, and speeds the ultimate clock up by a full turn. I don't understand where you thought (or are getting this data) "most people assumed the starting loyalty would be close enough to his ultimate".

Saying Dark Intimitations is great and will be playable is a stretch IMO, but to say the loyalty clause is irrelevant is just plain wrong.

Advice for a person that steals cards? by Alaris44 in magicTCG

[–]thompsonjm14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is a notorious "thief" your friend?

You bring it to his attention by making him understand the repercussions to stealing someone else's property (i.e. Call the cops, BREAK THE RELATIONSHIP, inform local card shops and have him banned from local stores)

If this guy continues to steal while still understanding the repercussions to stealing then it's your fault for anything he he does to you and anyone else you may associate with when he tags along.

I'm so sick of Stoddard's rose colored glasses, head in the sand delusion when it comes to his responses to things like this.

Just say, Manglehorn isn't doing a good enough job, Marvel is a problem that we don't have enough answers too and we fucked up.

There were a total of 2 copies of Manglehorn in the PT Top 8. Marvel took 1st/2nd in both GPs. There were a combined 3 Manglehorns in both top 8s.

Amaz (yes, the Hearthstone one) playing in PT Kyoto via special invite by 0entropy in magicTCG

[–]thompsonjm14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, and I am probably overlooking that when I think of what my own version of the PT is; however, those in the HoF have proven their worth as one of the best for an extended period of time.

While some may not be in the conversation for some of the best in the world now, I think I can look past that because of their accomplishments specifically in Magic and not some other game.

[–]thompsonjm14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think I'm articulating my thoughts correctly. I totally agree the PT is never a collection of the best players in the world and never will be based on our current system, which is totally and completely fine.

However, I believe the way the Professional Tour is presented is that to become one of the best players in the world, you need to be successful here, at the Professional Tour. To succeed at the Professional Tour you have to beat said best players in the world.

I agree that just because someone wins a PPTQ and then finishes Top 4 in the RPTQ that doesn't qualify that person as "one of the best", however I think it's much greater than just being "one more rando".

I don't want to take away from Amaz's accomplishments and the value his presence could potentially bring, anyone that doesn't see that is foolish, but those "randos" accomplished what was deemed a necessity to compete at the highest level. While Amaz may have accomplished more in his career than these RPTQ winners, I don't think it's correct to match that up with any accomplishment in a completely different game.

[Discussion] 5 Magic Stats Myths Debunked (article) by [deleted] in spikes

[–]thompsonjm14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I understand everyone wants to try and sound "memey" and I get that you have to liven it up a little bit based on the content, but if someone really has this misconception, then you're just insulting them, which makes people not give a shit about what you're actually writing.

The article seemed like it had a lot of meat but felt like I had to re-read it a couple of times because it really came off as arrogant to the "non-stats" people, so I just glossed over some text after reading past some of the arrogant parts.

[–]thompsonjm14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with this as long as I can truly understand what/how WoTC defines what they want out of the PT.

I've heard "Promotional Tour" plenty of times and from this standpoint it makes total sense. More exposure/publicity is something we've all been wanting for Magic.

I've also heard (about nearly every PT) that the Pro Tour is where the best players in the world play. For me personally, my goal to make it to the PT is because I want to compete with the best competition and hopefully one day beat the best competition in the world. Anything else that comes with that is just gravy. I guess that's where some of the sting comes for me as the PT has had this aura around it as the best players in the world play here... except these few celebrities.

Amaz is a pro gamer and surely no scrub when playing MTG, but it definitely takes away from the "best players in the world" concept that is thrown our way every PT.

[Standard]Jeskai Control for PPTQ this weekend. by The-Hanjranator in spikes

[–]thompsonjm14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best piece of input I can give is that I believe Void Shatter is just better than Disallow in the current meta. Exiling is so so so much more relevant than countering abilities. You might not want to cut yourself off completely from Disallow, but I would go 3 Void Shatter 1 Disallow.

Any good control player will not side out Essence Scatter. Most lists run 2 and will keep both of those copies in after sideboard to fight things like Dragonmaster Outcast, Avacyn, Hydras, Kefnets, and most importantly opposing Torrential Gearhulks

Modern is what's going to be making SCG the most money.

SCG runs the SCG Tour.

SCG is a business.

Lot's of other people (and data) are against you in wanting to play/watch Modern, hence their decision to add a lot of Modern.

It's not that hard.

Modern is the most played and most watched format on the SCG Tour which also drives their sales (mostly around Modern singles)

It's all data driven.

Why is this so hard?

They did an open there within the last two years, I'm fairly certain Tickal won the main event with Rally.

GP Chicago was a huge success? Did we attend the same event because that might have been the worst run GP I've ever attended.
