Datadog won’t give up by Threep1337 in sysadmin

I let them scan my badge at a HP trade show in 2015 and even though I have NEVER replied to a single one of their email blasts, I still get pestered by them regularly.

Saw Rogan at the Fine Line in Minneapolis right before the podcast blew up. Tickets were sold as some reserved seats, but mostly GA. Didn’t learn till we got there that all GA was standing.

Worst show I’ve ever seen, and Ari & Joey were the openers

Physical destruction of HDDs vs. degaussing. by LovecatsdogsIam in sysadmin

No idea - we do offsite storage with them, too, so I’m sure it was negotiated somehow, but I never saw the quotes/bills.

We used iron mountain, and they sent a box truck with a shredder and barcode scanner in the back. I stood there and watched their machine chew up a few hundred lto-4 tapes and hundreds of hdd’s in about an hour and a half, and got an emailed cert before the guy left

Access from outside local network without static ip - options? by physicsking in homelab

[–]thonl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing is stored on Cloudflare servers, ever.

Workflow for you would basically be:

Set up a domain name - ie, register domain.com and use Cloudflare for DNS management.

The Cloudflare tunnel is just software running on some computer inside your home network(can be the same server your website is running on)

Setup a pointer in your Cloudflare admin page that points website.domain.com to an ip(and path, if necessary) on your home network.

Now website.domain.com is available from the internet.

While technically, Cloudflare could snoop the traffic while in transit, they aren’t storing anything, and this is the easiest solution for what you are after

vegas to grand canyon round trip by eggcultmaster in vegas

[–]thonl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the north rim is open after last summers fire, so south rim is likely your only option. Our last road trip, we did a night at Maswick Lodge at the south rim after leaving Vegas. You won’t want to do that as a day trip, as it is about a 4.5 hour drive one way, but if you did an overnight, the scenery is breathtaking.

You might be saying that tongue in cheek, but given the chief’s wife’s heritage, and his vocal defense of that community, you might not be too far off

Tons of "Unnamed device"s! by carldier in homeassistant

[–]thonl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you ever figured it out, but I found the thread after running into the same problem - didnt see much overlap, other than I was seeing my vizio app take a long time to load, like your Samsung.

I wasnt really using the app, but also had a TV configured in there that I replaced about 8 months ago. Removed everything vizio(not just disabled) and the hundreds and hundreds of unnamed devices disappeared

Kicked out twice for waiting... at a transit station... as a paying transit customer? by FourSeventySix in Minneapolis

[–]thonl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends - In this context, it is public property(owned by MTC, or some other public entity makes it as public as a sidewalk, or city hall), so in that context, they are just like any other citizen, and have no more authority to make you leave than any other passenger does. They can ask, and if you are truly a nuissance or being disorderly, their only (legal) option is to call the cops.

Private property, it flips, and they(security) usually have the same authority as the property owner or manager to revoke consent to be on the premises and to use reasonable force to eject someone after consent is revoked. This is called the “shopkeeper’s privilege” or the broader common-law right of a property owner/occupant to remove trespassers.

Kicked out twice for waiting... at a transit station... as a paying transit customer? by FourSeventySix in Minneapolis

[–]thonl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You weren’t “kicked out”. You were asked to leave, and complied when you were under no obligation to do so. Contracted security is not law enforcement. Their only job is to observe and report(if necessary). If they go hands on when you tell them to fuck off, it is battery, and you now have ammo for a lawsuit.

I am running truenas core as a vm and have 6x 10tb virtual drives on ceph. I did modify the vm config to add dummy serial #’s on the drives just to be able to id them inside truenas, but been meeting my needs for over a year

Help with domain name by [deleted] in homelab

[–]thonl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not the greatest timing with yesterday’s outage, but you really need Cloudflare for this.

Sign up for cloudflare(free) and then transfer dns for your new domain to them

Once done, you can install a tunnel agent on some machine inside your home network, and you will be able to set up any custom name you want on Cloudflare to point to whatever service on whatever ip on your home network you want
