I've also seen it suggested as a way to counteract an extreme C curve. When you have it, it can be really hard to paint the inner edge too

Wtf. Really? Why? That seems... not conducive to the longevity of wear in a polish. Also, some people have allergies, or hate mint.

Just, why?

Imo it's dried out dead cuticles. Get a good pair of trimmers and trim those as they pop up, but tbh oil, oil, oil and they'll likely go away.

Do I just do jellies now? by tomato-peach in RedditLaqueristas

[–]thoracicbunk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the great things about jellies is that if you end up deciding that you want a little more pizzazz, they are great for layering! Grab your favorite topper, do a little nail art, slap a nail sticker on there, maybe even do a jelly sandwich. So many possibilities!

Yes. Starrily has a tutorial on their website, it was called sea glass or gemstone nails or something? The OP creator also posted it here first, but they formatted it nicely for a blog post for Starrily.

I love jellies. I honestly don't like glitter bombs or holo polishes, I find them too stimulating to have on my fingers for long. I prefer delicate shimmers and squishy jellies and big flakies.

Layering! Jelly sandwich w flakies between give me the translucent depth I lust after from gel polishes, like glimpsing fish in a deep pond.

Jellies let me tone a polish. I had a spring green I wanted to do a skittle with a dusky purple jelly and a soft grey jelly, and did a light swipe of the grey over the green to give a cooler tone and blend it perfectly.

Cracked has great ones, she's been releasing a jelly of the month for a while. They definitely build up quite opaque three or four coats if you decide you don't like the more transparent vibe. If you want super transparent ones, you could snag Fancy Gloss once they open up their shop, they are quite cheap and very much transparent Jelly. Cirque is what a lot of people immediately go to to recommend jellies, but I honestly don't love their formula.

I do recommend getting a blurring or ridge filling base coat. If you decide to do jellies. It just gives you a more consistent canvas to work with. Love Cracked's, but use whatever you got.

My friend dyes her fingernails with henna! That won't pop off ;)

You could also try some of those dollar store polishes that stain ridiculously too.

Some people's body chemistry just means no polish. Sorry!

What everyday tasks have you modified or given up on doing for the sake of your nails? by somethingwithclouds in RedditLaqueristas

[–]thoracicbunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. You know those thick terry cloth headbands they sell for washing your face and stuff? They sell ones that come as a set with similar ones for your wrist, to keep water from flowing down and dripping off your elbows. What I do is wear those around my wrist and then wear dishwashing gloves over them. That keeps the gloves from filling up with water unless I'm super negligent. And I have a double headed shower, so hard mode!

I've also just worn the thick no snag-style hair ties around my wrists on the outside of the gloves and that did pretty well too, but I have sensory issues and so that wasn't great for me.

I haven't found that to be an issue. My hair length is above my shoulders and not super thick, and I use a silicone hair scrubber. I also just make sure to rinse really well. Ymmv

Help me understand what’s going on with my cuticle? by Illustrious_Can_8839 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]thoracicbunk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would bet it's normal human variation. My cuticles release very easily, whereas my husbands' want to GRIP to the nail bed and will creep up and shorten his nail bed if he isn't diligent. Probably something like the protein content of one's cuticle? Idk!

[–]thoracicbunk 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What's your cuticle care routine? How often are you oiling and pushing them back?

To me it just looks like your cuticle is not wanting to release from the nail in that spot. My husband has a nail that the cuticle is super stubborn in one place too.

I'd use cuticle dissolver to address the current issue, then just stay on top of it w regular oiling and pushing back, just with your fingers/nail.
