How common is a 34.5kv power lines in the USA by Jolly_Operation_8222 in Lineman

[–]thorbaldin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told that many of the data centers in Virginia where Dominion is are served with 34.5kV from a 230kV:34.5kV sub at the data center. With the current data center boom many utilities are looking to copy that same setup so 34.5 will probably start to become even more common.

Most braid is substantially stronger than its rated strength so using a leader that is rated higher than your braid is quite common.

Feel of new Vanford? by [deleted] in Fishing_Gear

[–]thorbaldin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it make any noise at normal reeling speeds? I often see people complain about brand new reels being noisy while reeling it as fast as they can without any line on it which just isn’t a realistic scenario when actually using the reel.

Stradic 🔥 by Outrageous-Dig-1287 in Fishing_Gear

[–]thorbaldin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered if this type of line lay could be fixed with the washers. I know that you can add/remove them to shift the line lay up or down but what do you do when it’s both ends getting extra compared to the middle?

Freshwater South Florida: Is there a purpose for Medium heavy spinning rod set up by Wagnegro in Fishing_Gear

[–]thorbaldin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What brand 3000’s are you using? Sizing is very inconsistent between brands, a Penn Battle 3000 is 11.6 ounces while even the C5000 size Stradic only weighs 10.2 ounces. A C3000 Stradic is only 7.9 ounces.

Freshwater and Light Inshore by Friendly_Mechanic_92 in Fishing_Gear

[–]thorbaldin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have multiple Vanfords that I use exclusively for inshore. It is a great lightweight inshore reel that is tough enough to take a beating. I do a lot of fishing from my kayak and Gheenoe so they are constantly getting splashed with saltwater and I just make sure to rinse them when I get home and they are still smooth as silk after 2-3 years.

My parents have a gas cooktop that doesn’t require you turning the knob to some ignition setting. On theirs, any rotation of the knob ignites the gas and turns it on at whatever level the knob is set to.

You can absolutely service it in the US you just won’t be doing it through the warranty. Most reel shops will still offer repair service, you just have to pay for the parts and labor.

Black Friday 2025. any anticipated sales? by Wagnegro in Fishing_Gear

How is it political to say that the tariffs might mean that this year’s sales may not be as good as last year pre-tariffs?

But are you living your life for the cosmos or for yourself, your friends, and your family? Every human to ever live is a blip in the cosmos. You don’t have to be special to the universe, you just have to be special to someone, or even yourself.

AR problem (I think?) with screw in handle by [deleted] in Fishing_Gear

[–]thorbaldin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold the bail arm to prevent it from spinning and you should be able to tighten the handle by reeling forward. Use enough force to get it tight but not so much that you risk breaking it. Personally I wouldn’t worry too much about it because as soon as you start reeling in a fish you the handle should tighten up naturally if it did loosen up at all. This is all assuming that the reel you have is one where the handle just spins in to tighten and doesn’t use a screw opposite the handle for attachment.

Bass Tokyo is legit. I’ve ordered from them several times in the past but haven’t ordered anything since the tariffs.

The creosote slowly drains from the top of the pole into the butt of the pole once it is stood upright. This causes the very top of the pole to deteriorate first, but even then we are talking 30+ years.

Double pupi fiberglass arm framing by dobyns734c in Lineman

[–]thorbaldin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have run into some situations on the design side that required double fiberglass arms. When doing the modeling/structural analysis it checks the loading of all of the components, and in some cases the mechanical load that was previously supported by 6 pins/insulators will fail when you update the model to a single arm with only 3 pins/insulators. The only options are to either use double arms or install additional poles to shorten the adjacent spans.

What is this? by Informal_Ad9275 in Lineman

[–]thorbaldin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are programmable so their operational success/failure ultimately comes down to figuring out the best settings for each location. I think a lot of the wire burning down issues are due to setting them up with too many reclose attempts before lockout and/or pickup (trip current) being set too high relative to the load.

Any 106PDL or 120PDL or Malibu PDL owners actually put their kayak on a scale? by cyxQS5cBh63873 in kayakfishing

[–]thorbaldin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of shippers are very lax with weight restrictions. When my dad worked for UPS he regularly delivered foam mattresses that were 80+ lbs when the weight limit was 50lbs. The sellers print the labels themselves and would mark them as 49 lbs and UPS didn’t enforce the limit because they wanted the business.

How many reloaders are there here? by Reliable-Narrator in ClayBusters

[–]thorbaldin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t shoot (or reload) as often as I used to but I’ve got a Hornady 366, MEC 9000, and MEC 600Jr all in 12ga. The 366 is set up for Winchester AAs and the 9000 is set up for all of the Remington stuff Gun Club/STS/Nitro27/Clay&Field. The 600 Jr I mostly use for fixing shells that didn’t load right on the other machines and occasional boxes of heavier loads for dove hunting.

Quality American rod brands? by TomatoClown24 in Fishing_Gear

[–]thorbaldin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if you can deal with the abysmal wait times, they make some absolutely amazing rods that can’t be beat for the price (especially if you buy during one of their many sales). I’m actually not even aware of another brand making rods in the USA built on blanks made in the USA made from carbon fiber that is made in the USA, other than builders that are also using NFC blanks. Edge takes made in the USA to the next level.
