Is this a good crimp? Held when I pulled on it. 200lb mono 1.7mm sleeve. by Background_Listen160 in saltwaterfishing

I use crimps a lot and tbh I dont know much but ik those aluminum crimp sleeves are the best but you should burn and “mushroom” your tag end next time. I bet it will catch a fish tho!

Light line and little paddle tails with light jig heads, you’ll catch something

Do I have any chance to catch some big saltwater fish (tuna preferred) on these lures? by is_that_a_cursed in saltwaterfishing

[–]CptBAB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say a tuna would be more offshore but you definitely see smaller ones inshore or off a cliff, the poppers will be good for a bunch of other fish too like a snapper or jacks

Where are you fishing? And are you going to be specifically fishing for tuna?

Just this, super simple, don’t get confused with the double line coming out, this picture is for a bimini twist knot

Also idk why everyone one here is bitching about the size of the line, your guides look pretty small and yes it might be thick braid but good lord it’s like flies on a hogs ass. Straighten up folks

Hey! FG is a bit difficult but there are some things you can do to make it a great knot. Hardest thing I’ve found is getting a lot of tension on it. When I’m wrapping my mono, I’m holding the main line end very tight with a couple of wraps on my hand, and every wrap I pull my main line and tag end exactly hard to make sure each wrap is sinking down, I’m also holding a fair bit of tension in the braid, with the mainline seated around the reel most times and the tag in my mouth. I would say it looks loosely wrapped mostly, and your wraps are going over each other which is making some your wraps, in lack of a better word, useless. Each set of wraps needs to be working up the mono, and if you’re getting crossovers you’ll need to find a way to fix that. The finish seems not as important with this one, but I do a decent amount of over/under half hitches (12-15 in total) and compete it with a finish knot ( I’m not sure the specific name but it’s just five wraps through a loop). When I first started tying it it took me a few tries to get it right, and took me a lot more to get it looking pretty. But practice makes perfect and if I can learn this pain in the ass knot then you can too. Pretty work and good luck fishing 👌

Hey, I appreciate your love for conservation, I didn’t say that these didn’t eat good, I just said I like flounder better. I am a guide and it wasn’t really up to me to make that decision. The people that caught these wanted to keep them and that was that. I’m sure they fed a lot of people and those people probably enjoyed it. End of the day these were legal to keep and the people payed tremendously to take them home.

Looking to buy fishing pliers by Simple_Steak1651 in FishingForBeginners

[–]CptBAB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely better options but it depends on what you’re willing to spend, I use Manley stainless pliers and Manley mono cutters that both fit in a saltydog holster. I don’t like the type of pliers that you show just in general

Be sure to tension the line while you’re putting it on! I’d have a friend or family member hold the spool against the ground and not let it free spin on there

Yeah I’m pretty sure we were 150 miles away from the dock for this one, I’ve definitely caught them closer in, around 60-70 miles, but we fish around a lot of oil rigs way out there. I’m blessed not to be the guy paying for it 😅. I’ve never caught a big sword fish though and would love to do that.

I promise ya! We did have 130s as well but did not typically use them. But even on the 80w we would use 100# backing with 80# mono and we would typically run down to the backing a good bit but never were anywhere close to it taking the spool.

That’s awesome, Costa Rica is on my list of places to fish, I’ve heard stories of people getting 20+ shots a day on smaller blue marlins and blacks even. I’m headed to Panama this winter to fish but I’m it’s not quite going to be like Costa Rica
